I’m trying to test out a new Essence mascara each time I run out because they’re suuuper inexpensive (this one cost CAD$3.99), but I was really not a fan of this version. The formula might be okay, but the brush just ruins it completely. It’s too big for me to really coat my lashes, and it’s hard to get at the lower lashes. On top of that, there’s always a clump of product at the end of the brush when you pull it out, so if you’re not careful you can end up with clumpy lashes that are difficult to fix with this chunky brush. It was worth a shot, but I won’t be repurchasing this mascara.

First off, the brush of this one is very big and not even tapered so it takes some practise to get the hang of it and reach the smallest lashes.
The formula isn’t too wet or dry but somehow I still manage to smear it during application – this very thing happened with EL’s Sumptuous Extreme because the brush gets loaded with product. Wiping the excess before application is mandatory.
The first layer doesn’t do much but if you keep layering you’ll get curled, lengthened and volumized lashes without spider legs if you comb between the layers.
The color is reasonably dark but not super black and more matte than glossy.
Overall I think it’s a decent mascara with super affordable pricetag but the result is very soft and probably wouldn’t repurchase.

I LOVE this Mascara!
I have tried multiple mascaras and this one is definitely my fav. Better than some expensive mascaras. It is SUPER black and makes my eyelashes thick. However, you probably won’t like the mascara at first, but after it dries out a little it’s magical
PROS
-Super black
-Perfect for the evening, gives you thick, long eyelashes
-Has a lot of product and the price is great
-Gives you so much volume!
CONS
-The applicator is HUGE so it may be a little hard to apply for some.
-It does make your eyelashes longer but not like super long

This mascara… doesn’t actually suck. 😀
I initially really didn’t like it – the formula was smooth and wet, but it didn’t hold a curl, smudged easily, barely built up on my lashes, and didn’t really make them look like I was wearing any mascara at all. Then I tried layering it as much as possible… and now I love this mascara! If you just layer on as many coats as possible as it dries, the formula makes lashes thick (but defined) and gives them a curl just through the upwards motion of the wand – no eyelash curler needed, as that actually won’t work at all with this mascara. It sort of reminds me of a drugstore dupe for Clinique’s High Impact mascara, albeit with a bigger wand and a less long-lasting formula; this is definitely not smudgeproof/waterproof, so it might not be suited to humid climates. That and its bulky, unsightly packaging are the only flaws I can really spot with this product… Overall I’d recommend it because it’s so cheap, doesn’t clump, and works really nicely if you apply it right.

3.5 I actually like this mascara. I find it thickens my skimpy lashes, especially at the root(s) after 2 coats & it is really black. Blacker then say Colossal’s Glam Black, L’Oreal’s Voluminous Blackest Black or Great Lash Very Black but NOT as black as my Rocket, Mega Plush or Rimmel mascaras in their 003Extra black. It’s certainly a drier formula, so if it’s length or separation that you’re after I’d pass on it. However, again, I like how it plumps up & darkens my lashes. Package rating is low, yes it’s cute big purple tube but Essence really ought to package properly as I wonder if part of the reason my mascara’s so dry is if it were opened & examined in the store prior?! Even if Shoppers Drug Mart would put thick tape around it would suffice. It cost only a little over $4 & has decent quality of mascara’s I pay twice as much for. I may re-purchase indeed.

I like trying the Essence mascaras because they are absurdly cheap and usually pretty decent – beyond the price point. This one was new with no reviews on here yet, so I tried it blind.
I like the huge purple tube. For some reason I also think big tube = big lashes. The brush is a really big bristle brush, domed and tapered somewhat at both ends.
Sadly, the formula is not great. The pigmentation is good enough – black but not super black (certainly not “triple black”) and not glossy at all. It is VERY dry and goes on with lots of crumbles. It doesn’t really thicken or add volume at all. It coats lashes after several coats but they are not improved much by this. It’s a very basic performing mascara and definitely not especially dark or thickening. Holds curl okay; lasts fine without smearing or flaking.
I wouldn’t buy it again.
