This review is for the shade “Bold Burgundy.” I was intrigued by the idea of wearing a burgundy mascara, in hopes of making my [green] eye color pop. I was happy to find an inexpensive one from a cruelty-free company, so I could try it.
First off, “Bold Burgundy” looks downright red in the tube, which was a bit disconcerting. It looks darker once it’s on the lashes and dried, though. Unfortunately, I had to apply quite a bit to make it show up, and the product smears fairly easily on my extremely oily skin. This mascara is definitely not waterproof, and it doesn’t hold up well on my oil-slick skin. It’s a decent mascara, but only decent.
It’s also dirt cheap, so if you want to try a colored mascara, you’re not risking much. It didn’t work well for me, but I’m not sorry I tried it. I’m going to experiment with a burgundy liner next.

I’m loving that more colored mascaras are landing on the market, and was thrilled to find these at Kmart for $1.99 a pop. (On the Jordana website they’re listed at $2.99.)
There’s a good variety — a deep plum, a lilac color (Vivid Violet), a blue, a couple pinks, a bright green, and a dark red (Bold Burgundy). I picked up the lilac and the burgundy, because I have green eyes and thought they’d both bring out the color.
Now, to start with, they do offer decent coverage. Today I threw on the lilac and it does offer a bit of volume and length, like Jordana promises. But it’s nothing to write home about. I prefer it on my lower lashes, and I see a hint of color there. It works OK on top lashes, too, but be sure you’ve curled them, because they can otherwise look like they’re coated in dried tinted powder. (They do show up on lashes — it’s not like it shows up the same way an inky black would, but it’s noticeable.)
The burgundy is noticeable, too, albeit more subtle, in a way. That applies more like a reddish brown on top lashes, or at least it’s more subtle in that darker colors blend any crooked or wild lashes better than a lighter color would. I also kind of like this on bottom lash lines, and it can be fun to just add to a couple lashes for a pop of red or lilac, but it doesn’t show up as well on my lighter bottom lashes. I also have to be careful because it can easily smudge on the lid. The red, it did smudge a couple times and then I have some pink skin around my eye. Cool if you want that effect, but it’s also a good way to look like you’ve been crying or have irritated eyes.
The real problem I find here, and this is why my rating is two stars, is because these are hard to get off. I usually use the Body Shop chamomile oil or butter to take off eye makeup and it usually works like a charm, but here, not so much. It’s very hard to remove (maybe eye makeup remover would work better here). After setting cleanser around my eyes for two or three minutes and hoping it’ll do, I find it doesn’t. There’s a bit of mascara stubbornly clinging to lashes, and the red mascara in particular tints the skin around my eyes. I wore just a bit on my lower lashes one Saturday afternoon, and after washing my face that night and applying an Egyptian Magic knockoff around my eyes to hopefully take off the rest, I still found myself with bits of pink skin under my eyes on Sunday night. Again, cool if you want that effect, but if you don’t …
