Edit: I added a pic. I’m tan w buzzed brown hair and it’s an eye close up of the result of 2 coats. After writing this, I read some negative reviews below and really don’t get the hatred at all … wet formula means no clumps and it dries super fast if using a light hand and building, it makes my lashes curl w no curler (I saw a Mexican MAC mua vid once where he explained to apply mascara to base of lashes before going towards the tips and that makes the curl hold which since watching that I don’t use a curler anymore), it smudges not too bad, etc…..,
I’ll start out by saying I haven’t purchased a mascara (aside from dr mascara fixer top coat which I always have) in many many years. Every Ipsy bag birch box gift w purchase etc gives them so I have a million I go through a few mos at a time. So I’m totally unbiased and am not really seeking anything except well black eyelashes.
This is unique for me because it only looks good (or at its personal best) if you apply a layer, go to next eye, and start again with a fresh dip on first eye when it has dried. I have never ever done that except when layering different mascaras. One layer is seriously underwhelming. It just looks like whatever you started with but black. Then when you come on in with a fresh dip for the second coat when 1st coat has dried, it really pops. 180 night and day difference. I love the look – but gave 4 stars cuz most of my mascaras do that in one go.
The brush is a conical job w short hard plastic bristles – which isn’t my fave (I prefer soft bristles not hard plastic); however, admittedly, the conical shape does provide a nice narrow end to get in the little hard-to-get corner lashes
As far as wear, without my trusty dr mascara fixer (I always test out new ones w/o for a few days), it is better than most but with some daily more vigorous activities or napping it leaves a slight raccoon ring which is very difficult to remove w a q-tip. Which brings me to the worst feature: removal at night. It is sooooo hard to remove for me for a non waterproof mascara! I have HE eye makeup removers balms oils even a dang mascara remover wand and it just don’t wanna budge! I guess it’s the 2 coats?

Pretty good. Does transfer a bit

I think Benefit does mascara better than anything else. I love wearing blue mascara occasionally, and the Benefit They’re Real Blue was my favorite. Sadly it has been discontinued, but last time I was at Ulta I saw this one. It looked bluer in the tube, but on my lashes, the color seems to be the same – it’s not too vivid, but definately a noticeable blue. I also have the black, which has a wetter formula, and seems to work better as it dries out a little…but still a great mascara, with a slim tapered brush that gets into the corners and reaches every lash.
I always use a primer, and a dry mascara brush to comb and separate when applying. I don’t wait for it to dry between coats, because that seems to make my lashes clump. I put on the primer, and immediately follow with the mascara while the primer is still wet, doing two or three coats. I find that I can get most mascaras to look amazing this way.
If you like blue mascara, this is a really good one. The black is also excellent. Will definately repurchase. I took a star off because Benefit is not a cruelty free brand.

There’s better mascaras out there. First few times I wore this it smudged. It doesn’t hold a curl. I’ve persevered and made it work by wearing it over the Canmake Quick lash curler, but it’s such a faff having to do 2 steps for mascara. It’s not a horrible mascara in that it separates lashes, is buildable and not clumpy. I don’t mind the wand either, but it’s just not an amazing mascara.

I subscribe to a few beauty boxes so I am always getting new mascara to try out. I had an initially negative reaction to this because it is so obvious and usually I prefer more natural looking mascaras that just add some length and definition. It is kind of wet and flakes and smudges a little, but not horribly. It adds lots of length and volume without clumping. I like how the brush reaches every lash. I have learned not to use this on my lower lashes because of smudging, but otherwise I do like it after it dries and looks less garish. I possibly would consider buying the mini version, but probably not if I’m being honest.

This mascara is terrible; it smudges all over. The formula is a way to wet doesn’t matter if you are 15years old or 50 years old. The price is ridiculous. When you compare it to drugstore mascaras, it feels like a rip off as it uses the same ingredients and the same wand. But you pay a hell of a lot more. It doesn’t do a better job in lengthening the lashes. For example, if you use the great lash mascara by Maybelline(or any other), it will give you the same volume but doesn’t smudge. The only thing that I like about it is that it is intensely black compared to its drugstore competitors. If you compare it to a MAC mascara, first it’s a shame to do it, and second, it’s ridiculous. The formula is much better. First IT DOESN’T SMUDGE! It lengthens the lashes and IT ISN’T WET!(This will never work) This mascara was boosted by Influencers to make a lot of money people don’t get it. Ingredients are worth a few cents, but people are buying it. The worst is that they believe it will do a better job than a cheap mascara. Go and do your research!!

This is clearly a mascara that sets the example for the fact that the choice of mascara is very much a matter of personal preference and need according to your “lash status” so to speak. When I first saw this mascara shortly after it was launched already there began the division between those who seem to hate this mascara and those who seem to love it. So to start with this is not a lame or boring mascara in any sense…
The secret to a mascara is both in the formula but also with the brush. This is the rubber kind of spikes brush that sometimes is good sometimes is the opposite, again with a divided group of followers. This also comes with a very unusually bendy brush which I at first thought I was going to hate, but since have begun to looove!!!
The formula is wet and therefore virtually clump free which I happen to like. It is pitch black and gives off a lot of both color and volume to the lashes and adds length too if used on the right set of lashes and with the right technique. It also builds length on me.
As you understand, this is a mascara I truly like. So what then are my mascara preferences. Well I am older. I am not in my twenties when Ah… back in the day my lashes were long and fluttery and pretty much looked like falsies all by themselves… Sort of the way most 20 something lashes look to me these days… (Ok end of old mama rant). What I look for in a mascara is therefore something that can build structure, (that is build volume and length and hold it without clumping or weighing the sparse and thin lashes I have down) and which can hold a curl and above all does not smudge or bleed from the perpetually watering eyes that some of us have to deal with every day as we… age…
This mascara ticks all those boxes for me. And that is probably the very reason why many younger folks blessed with a great set of lashes also may hate this mascara, since it with probably create quite a mess with its structure and volume building abilities on a set of pretty good lashes to begin with.
But if you have sparse lashes that need both volume and length (and not just want it to look like a double set of falsies) just to feel as if you actually have some lashes, then this might be for you! (unless you happen to react to it from sensitivity which we sometimes all do to random ingredients or formulas). I do not react to anything in this mascara, but do to some other kinds of mascaras…
But there is actually a bit of trick to the application! Since the brush is quite unusually bendy… A light hand is needed to make sure the color is deposited evenly coating each lash. It is also good to brush the lashes some from above to increase the curling factor and increase hold and ability to build length. Also do not wiggle this brush like one might have to sometimes with more natural like traditional mascara bristles! If you wiggle this you will end up with a goopy mess easily. A light hand and smooth strokes from under and above will however set you up for success and especially if your lashes are more on the sparse side…
Also this is not waterproof, but for me this holds up really good! Most mascaras smudges on me but not this unless I rub my eyes. it will not come off due to watering eyes and it actually takes quite a good eye make up remover to melt it off without needing to rub or tug at the eye area, (which we shouldn’t and … of course… never?…do!?)
Update October 2019: One last little tip… I find that this mascara stays fresh much longer in the mini tube that you can buy at some places like Sephora. The small ones lasts me as long as the full size tube so there is absolutely no reason to buy the big one! In the larger tube there is probably more air, which will make the formula change faster. And once this becomes to creamy and not as wet anymore as when new it will not work as well on the lashes. So if you want to try this or like this – buy the small one!

This mascara is way too expensive for what it does. I don’t like the formula as it is too watery. It feels very wet, and it’s easy to mess up your makeup while you’re applying it. It smudges quite a lot for the claim “smudge-proof.”I don’t like it! There are, for sure, better ones on the market for half the price or even less!

I got this in an Ipsy bag as a sample so I can’t say much on price, but I can say it’s been awful for me. The first time I wore it I somehow managed to make my eye water (my fault) and it clumped the mascara like CRAZY! I had maybe 3 large eyelashes and it was a nightmare to get off. I tried it again this morning because I messed up before and it still clumped up horribly and it took me forever to brush them out to look semi-decent. I will say it helps to wipe off the excess on the tube before trying to apply, but it still refuses to look good on my already naturally long and dark eyelashes. I’m glad I didn’t spend money on this in Sephora.
