If you have thin lips and love wearing dark colors, a good lip brush is an absolute must for getting the shape right and for lining the lips just right. One problem I found with a lot of lip brushes I tried before, was that the shape was too broad for my small mouth, and it wasn’t that easy to line in the corners. This Chikuhodo brush is just great for me: the shape tapers off to a triangle, which makes it perfect to work the corners, and the width is perfect for think lips. The fact that it’s retractable makes it perfect for travel or for just taking it along with me in my makeup clutch for touch ups. You have to be careful with cleaning, to make sure it dries completely before putting it back in its case, because it can smell horrible if you place it in there even the slightest bit wet and that smell is really hard to remove later on. After washing, I give it at least 3 days to dry completely. Which is why it;s better to buy two brushes at once, while the other one dries up. A great purchase and I will always use.

I love retractable lip brushes. This lip brush from Japonesque is designed well. It’s elegant and functional. I have the one from Real Techniques but unfortunately it has a separate cap that falls off in my purse, so I can only use it at home.
When you pull open the Japonesque brush, the synthetic brush head pops out, and when you push it closed, a little round door closes over the bristles to protect them in your bag. It’s cleverly self-contained.
If you’re wearing a nude or a pale lip color, you probably do not need a brush at all and can apply lipstick straight from the bullet. But with dark colors, using a brush gives you a more polished and sophisticated look. The brush head is long and somewhat squared off. In my experience, this shape is very good for precision, especially when using deep shades such as bright red and dark burgundy, which are notoriously unforgiving colors if you make a mistake. Some of the lip palettes I’ve owned over the years did not include a brush, so I like to have a good portable brush.
I have Cinema Secrets brush cleaner, which dissolves anything, but in a pinch, regular liquid hand soap works, too. Because the bristles are synthetic, they dry quickly.
While most lip brushes seem to come in black cases, this one is silver and that makes it easier for me to find when rummaging in my purse. The brushed finish does not show fingerprints.
I paid $14.50 for this brush at Ulta, and I feel that it is reasonably priced compared to other lip brushes on the market. I like the sleek design. It’s sturdy enough to tote in a bag, and it’s less expensive than department store lip brushes. (It is more expensive than the Real Techniques lip brush, but as I mentioned, the design of the Real Techniques lip brush is not as travel-friendly.)
I would definitely buy again. In fact, I plan to buy a couple of back-ups.

Very good value for money, fantastic for travel. The brush retracts and a little cover slides over the hole, no worry about losing a cover. When you want the brush to become available, just give a tiny push and it comes out of its hiding place…Pure genius! The brush is extremely fine tipped, I use it for spot coverage of freckles, discolorations, even tiny spider veins. You could even use it to cover just the specific area the size of an “o”, that’s how accurate it is. I have 3 of them, one for undereye shadow coverage, another for spot dabbing my La Mer crème foundation (see my review) onto spots, and a 3rd one in case (God forbid!) they ever stop making it.

This is my first Japonesque brush purchase. I really love this brush. My lipstick application is is very even and I love the fact that the brush retracts so that I can carry it with me. I would definitely would purchase again.

I love this, with only one small complaint. The size of the brush is a little long when extended out, and it feels like I don’t have great control. But, as the reviewer previous to me said, it allows me to very precisely line and fill, which I love. I love the packaging, and the squared shape so it doesn’t roll. This is my first Japonesque brush, and I would repurchase.

I’m on the fence with this. It’s very convenient and small, perfect for travel. The small brush is made of synthetic fibres which should allow for a rich colour deposit, but it’s unfortunately not the case. I have to really pack on the colour on the brush to get a good deposit. For me, it’s just easier to directly apply my lipstick directly. However, where this brush really stands out is in how fine a line it can create. If I want to put my lipstick on closer to the edge of my lipliner, this makes it a piece of cake! If I want to correct a line or perfect it, this does the trick! I probably won’t buy it again if something happens to it, but it serves my purposes well.

I was frustrated with this product from the first time I used it. Everytime I put a little pressure to apply it to my lip the brush goes back into the handle. I would never buy
it again. I tried to talk to Shoppers Drug Mart and they said I would have to contact you people.

I got this brush today. i tried using it to apply my lipstick and it doesn’t do a great job. First, the brush is not tapered/ round, the tip is flat and the bristles are all the same length which makes the application uneven. Second, the bristles are hard so rather than putting the color on my lip, its dragging the color

Like scintilla 1981, I bought one of these that was broken – on the 2nd one I purchased, the lid, which also makes the brush come out for use, was too loose. I returned it and the store replaced it no questions asked. This is an excellent lip brush – not too soft, it applies lipstick perfectly, the fact that it retracts makes it perfect for my purse and the price is hard to beat. Many, many years ago, I had a Max Factor lip brush (also retractable) that was great but the plastic bit that made the brush come out was practically broken away. Other brushes I’d tried were either good but not retractable or they retracted but were too soft to do a good job. This brush is, as Goldilocks might say, “just right”. I have 2 of them – one for my makeup table and one for my purse.
SDM/Quo seems to have discontinued this brush but I’ve found them from time to time, lingering in some smaller SDM stores so I’ve picked up extras when I’ve seen them (I always test them in-store to make sure they work before I bring them home because sometimes the mechanisms don’t work). Still my favourite lipstick brush of all time.

I bought this lip brush at my local Pharmaprix. It broke right away (the spring mechanism) and the cpa fell off. I returned it and got another one, and so far the spring has been perfect. The brush is excellent, nice firm bristles that can be used to apply lipstick, gloss, whatever. The stem (?) is the right weight and I like the length as well. Overall, an excellent lip brush (you dont want the bristles to bend too much or be too soft as its quite difficult to apply otherwise). Great value for the money.

I’m pleasantly surprised with this brush, it works really well. The spring mechanism lasts for years and the brush retains its shape for just as long. The top never comes off in my makeup bag either. This is a really great lip brush, which I’m sure I’ll be buying more of in the future.

I needed a retractable lip brush and could not find one at the Sephora in my local JC Penney (go figure). So when I saw this at Target, I figured how could I go wrong? The bristles are stiff, sort of stuck together and come to a point, which I find strange. It almost looks like it should be a brush for applying eyeliner (thick eyeliner, perhaps, but not lipstick). And the casing isn’t travel friendly–you pull up the case and it encloses the brush but it is still accessible from the top (no cap).

The actual brush is OK, the packaging not so much, it broke on me the first time I used it. I continued to use it anyway because the brush was OK. I used for a couple of months, then I started using another retractable lip brush in another brand and threw this away.
Maybe you’ll like this if the packaging doesn’t break like it did for me.

This brush is horrible. Every time that I use it I have at least 4 hairs from the brush on my lips that I have to pick off. Also, it doesn’t apply the lipstick smoothly but rather makes a streaky line. While it is soft, who wants to have brush hairs stuck to their streaky lipstick?

It worked all right for a while and then it broke. The price is pretty low, but I also didn’t use the lip brush *that* much. Other than that, it did its duty for a while but I wouldn’t buy it again.

I needed a lip brush pronto and found this at target…Through the packaging I noticed the brush looked a little full(compared to my last one) and I couldn’t feel how stiff it was so I worried it might not work well etc….well, it works great….no complaints at all.
Edit: I don’t know if it was my fault but this lip brush broke after I week…I went to open it and it opened up so much that I saw all of its inside parts and never got it to go back together properly.
Double Edit lol: Okay I bought a second one and it ended up not functioning properly within a month…no longer retracts..not sturdy at all

I have been looking for a decent retractable lip brush for quite some time. I found this brush at Target and it works well. It’s stiff enough to pick up lip color without wasting tons of lipstick. The only thing that I do not like about the brush is that the cap does not fit on the end of the brush. I don’t like to use a lip brush in public restrooms and lay the end of the brush on the counter/sink of unknown places. Call me picky…

I bought this brush in a online shop. The description sounds really great & the brush looks on the pic very beautiful. Today i received the package with this brush. I love the black velvet-cover and the design… but the quality from the brush itself is not good. I was very disapointed… If you open it…It looks “cheap”! The natural-hair bristels are too soft and it´s loosing a lot of hair. I will ship it back…. and i will order a lip-brush from Mac or B.Brown for a “cheaper” price!

A fantastic and very elegant retractable lip brush with natural hairs. The handle and the cap are black metal and very durable. I just wish the hair-cluster would’ve been a little thicker.

Wish I could give it zero rating. It fell apart, unable to be reassembled, after maybe 5 uses. The fact that the tester was broken the same way should’ve dissuaded me but unfortunately didn’t. It’s flimsy and poorly constructed. The retractable part was what drew me to it but I’ll go back to another brand that’s made decently.

This is such an awesome little lip brush. I love that it retracts so it doesn’t get my makeup bag all dirty after I use it (or get covered in lint in my bag before I can use it).

I cannot recommend this brush. It fell apart in to many pieces after only a month of use. Not worth the money, obviously. An inferior product.

Definitely a case of you get what you pay for. Was a good, basic lip brush until it broke completely in half while retracting it. I’d only had it two weeks! Was also a PITA cleaning. Going back to Sephora and will save up for a better quality brush from MAC or Chanel.

I bought this on impulse because I already have one by The Body Shop and it’s OK but I wanted another one to have around. I must admit I really like the single piece design, no keeping up with the top or dropping it on the bus/subway/car LOL! Anyway, I don’t use it often as I wear a lot of glosses but for those glosses in tins (CARGO) or pots or that occassional use of lipstick it’s worked great! Not too narrrow and not a paint brush. No problems with shed either. I don’t “wash” it per se, I dont want water to get trapped in the casing, but I use a baby wipe to keep it clean. I would buy it again if I gets lost or something.

As just about everyone else has said, this brush is a big ol’ fail for portability, since the lid does indeed fall off with the slightest provocation. Also, it isn’t truly retractable, it just has a sleeve that slides over the bristles.
However, I do really love the shape and the springiness of the brush itself, so I just use it at home, and I am actually thinking of buying another one.

This is a decent lip brush that I can keep in my purse, but the lid just refuses to stay on properly. Since the bristles retract it isn’t a huge downside, but it is annoying none the less. I would repurchase if I lost it though, because RT brushes are affordable and cruelty free.

Yeah, so, I ordered this online from Ulta. Maybe I should have read the reviews here first. True, the cap is not very secure if you carry this in your purse, that could be a problem. I see some seem to not understand how/why this is retractable. There is a metal part that slides up and down over the actual brush.
So I think of this more as ‘encased’ as opposed to retractable. It takes some getting used to, but by the second time I used this, I was used to it. The brush is quite narrow/thin, which I suppose that could be nice for precise applications. The brush itself is not soft–which I suppose is a good thing for a lip brush, as it can stand up to many lip products. The bristles are short, which I like, as it keeps from product seeping into the bristles and not only prevents wasting product but allows for a more even/precise application.
As someone who usually never really sees a need or a desire for a lip brush (in my world), this has converted me. To me that is a mark of a great product. Will definitely repurchase and I already plan on picking up another one (or two!) the next time I am in Ulta.

The shape of this brush head is perfect – it’s easy to do a very precise, tidy red lip with this. The synthetic bristles are easy to clean and cruelty free. It was not expensive and it works very well. There is only one problem with it: the cap likes to fall off in my purse. If the cap were more secure, I’d give it a much higher rating.

I don’t use this as a lip brush, I use this to apply my concealer to scars or pimples on my face. This is my least favorite Real Techniques brush because the packaging is extremely weird and I really don’t like the cap on it. The retractability of it is really weird and I’m not even sure how it quite works. The bristles are also not as soft as my other Real Techniques brushes, but I do think it applied my concealer really, really well and I liked it. I’d probably buy it again because it applies my concealer wonderfully well, but I did not like the packaging.

The lid comes off as some people have mentioned and that drives me crazy because everything in my makeup bag could end up with lipstick on it, very bad. I also wish it was smaller since I have it in my very small touch up bag, those are the main issues I see with this brush. Other than that it gets the job done for lips or concealer, I plan to keep it at home. I’ve ordered a retractable lip brush from another brand to carry with me for lipstick or spot concealer.

These retractable brushes are the first line of Real Techniques brushes I’ve had an issue with. The plastic cap does not stay on the brush whatsoever, so the whole portability thing is completely lost. Also, the brush itself sucks, to put it bluntly. The bristles are way too stiff and they’re also too long and wide to apply lipstick properly. The brush head just isn’t a good size to be a lip brush at all. I was intrigued by the prospect of a quality, affordable, retractable (travel friendly) lip brush, but this is a big fail. Just an observation, but I’ve noticed now that the brushes say Sam & Nic Chapman on the packaging, instead of just Samantha Chapman, the quality has gone very downhill. Maybe they’re more concerned with profits now than quality? (I’m referring to the retractable bronzer & kabuki brushes, which both are also completely lesser quality than the older RT brushes). Hopefully this line is just a fluke & more great brushes are to come! If you’re looking for an awesome affordable lip brush, the RT detailer brush is great, but it’s not retractable if that’s what you need.
