Kat Von D packaging has a distinct style; some of her makeup cases have looked like little coffins, and her logo is in a Gothic font. I love the head of the brush and the black-and-white bristles. It reminds me of Elsa Lanchester’s wig in the 1935 film, “Bride of Frankenstein.”
The sculpted, beveled sides of the Edge Foundation Brush hug facial contours and you can hold the brush from virtually any angle, making it comfortable to use and versatile. Stippling is a piece of cake with the Edge Foundation Brush. It’s a cinch to dab into the little grooves around the bottom of the nose. If you have a thin, watery foundation or a sheer BB cream and you want to get more coverage from it, this brush will help you build it up. Less pressure will yield full coverage and firm pressure provides sheerer coverage. The shape of the brush and the soft, densely packed bristles blend foundation seamlessly, yet the brush head has a little bit of “give,” so it does not drag or tug too much at the skin, which is my chief complaint with the Artis Oval 7.
It has a long, elegant tapered handle. When working as a professional makeup artist, long handles make it easier to work on someone else. A long handle isn’t as important when you’re doing your own makeup, but I also like how tall and proud The Edge Foundation Brush looks standing upright in a glass cylinder.
The synthetic bristles of the Edge are cruelty free and easy to wash with Cinema Secrets brush cleaner. If you buy this brush and have trouble removing foundation from the brush head with regular soap or MAC’s brush cleaner, get Cinema Secrets. The blue solution dissolves makeup quickly and the brush will rinse cleanly with a little water. I blot mine with a microfiber towel and dry the brush upside down in a Benjabelle brush tree. (This prevents water from collecting inside the ferrule.)
When your brush arrives or you pick one up at Sephora, the box should be wrapped in plastic. When you open the box and take out the brush, it should also be wrapped in plastic. I appreciate the extra measures the company takes to make sure that the package hasn’t been tampered with and that you’re getting a pristine brush.
I paid $34 for this Kat Von D brush, which seems to be on par with MAC’s prices. I consider it to be a better value than my Artis Oval 7 Fluenta, which cost me 70 bucks, and by comparison the Artis is a bit awkward because of the handle placement. I know most people adore Artis, but I haven’t been thrilled with mine. It’s satisfactory, but it isn’t amazing. It’s not flexible, it’s a little too big…and it’s overpriced. On the other hand, I would definitely buy the Edge Foundation Brush again, and at $34, I can actually afford to buy a backup.
