I bought the Fluenta Oval 7 from Neiman Marcus two years ago, and wasn’t thrilled with it for the price I paid. However, it has some good points. It doesn’t shed, and the synthetic bristles are relatively soft. I’ve given the Oval 7 a fair chance as a foundation brush but I rarely reach for it. I prefer a traditional handle, or even the beautyblender sponge. I wasn’t ready to give up on the Artis brand entirely, so when Anthropologie was having a holiday sale, I bought the next smaller brush, Oval 6, in the Smoke series.
There is quite a jump in size from the 6 to the 7. I was kind of surprised at how dinky 6 is when I opened the box. From the back it looks like a dinner spoon. It’s easier to control the Oval 6 than the larger Oval brushes. The Oval 6 bristles seem to be more flexible and softer than the Fluenta 7. Even though the Oval 6 is small, I enjoy it more for applying foundation. It doesn’t tug at the skin as much as its larger cousin, and it follows the contours of the face with more ease. However, if you are in a hurry, you might become impatient with the smaller size because it takes longer to cover the face. A lot of people use this for concealer but not foundation. I’ve used the Oval 6 for blush and for contouring with creams.
PROS:
1) Synthetic “Cosmefibre” bristles are cruelty free and soft.
2) The brush heads are well-constructed. I have not witnessed any shedding.
3) Dense bristles are good for blending.
4) It does not leave streaks like a flat paddle brush.
5) Can be used for powders, although generally I prefer a fluffier brush for powder.
6) Helps you get full coverage from thin liquid foundations.
7) The Smoke handle is dark grey and silver. If makeup gets on the handle, it is not as obvious as it is with the lighter handles in the Elite series.
8) Glides over the skin more pleasantly than the Oval 7.
9) The Oval 6 is a good size for blending cream blushes and thicker concealers.
10) Artis brushes look sleek and modern.
CONS:
1) Artis handles are perpendicular to the brush head, and this forces your arm and hand into certain positions in order to move the brush across your skin. The handle placement makes it more tiring to hold compared to normal brushes. So it’s not the best design for my friend with carpal tunnel syndrome or my octogenarian great aunt who has arthritis.
2) Dense brush heads like these can stir up flakes on dry or peeling skin. If you have dry skin and use a brush like this for foundation, you want to make sure that you’ve already exfoliated and moisturized.
3) Artis brushes are expensive and they make spendy cleaning supplies to go with them, too. I like the cleaning pad a lot, but it’s cost prohibitive to buy all the supplies unless you’re planning to use several Artis brushes on a regular basis. You can make due with cheaper cleaning tools such as a microfiber towel and a bottle of Parian Spirit. I dry my normal brushes upside down in a brush tree to keep water away from the ferrules, but because of the quirkiness of Artis brushes, they have to be dried flat.
4) Some of the advertising I saw for Artis implied that you’ll use less product with these brushes. However, I haven’t found that to be true. The dense bristles actually soak up a lot of foundation and this is obvious when I deep clean the brush with Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner.
5) The Smoke series is nice-looking but not quite as glossy as the Fluenta series. However, there isn’t much difference in quality so I don’t think it’s worth paying extra to get a Fluenta.
6) Ultimately, I still prefer the finish I get with a Beautyblender sponge to either the Artis Oval 6 or Oval 7. However, there are rare instances when it isn’t practical for me to use a damp sponge to apply foundation. For those times, I do like the Oval 6. But I also like the much cheaper Real Techniques Expert Face Brush.
7) The Artis brushes are overpriced. This one retails for $57 USD. Luckily many companies have duped these brushes at more affordable prices.
The Verdict:
I like the Artis Oval 6. However, if I were going to purchase a backup of this brush, I’d buy the equivalent in their cheaper Brushcraft series, or I’d buy the less expensive MAC Oval 6. I like the Oval 6 more than the Artis Oval 7, even though the larger brush costs more. The Oval 6 has been more versatile to me because of its size. It can fit into most pressed pans of face powders, and is good for blending cream blush and concealer. (I’m not crazy about the Oval 7 because it is more awkward than my other foundation brushes and it tugs at facial skin more than any of them, including the Oval 6.)

These brushes are absolute crap for doing anything on your eyes. I have 6 of them – I got the 5 together plus the large 8 for Xmas. The only thing they are good for is foundation and concealer. I thought maybe I could apply cream eyeshadow with them but the results are blotchy at best. Forget powder eyeshadow. How these brushes have gotten such good reviews is beyond me. Unless it is purely for foundation and concealer – then I understand. But I rarely wear foundation so they are a waste for me. I’m only sad I didn’t keep the packaging cuz I would return them.

This brush was a great brush…until it broke at the neck (the skinniest part of the brush) with normal use. What a design flaw.

If you, like me, are looking for Beauty Blender replacement for faster morning routine, get the Oval 7. Oval 6 is a lot smaller than I imagined but it blends concealer and contours perfectly. I can use it for some rough eyeshadow applications in the morning but I believe Oval 3 would be better suited for this purpose. To get the most of the Artis’ incredible blending Oval 7 or Oval 8 would be a lot better. I like the Oval 6 but it’s weird to describe. It’s like a little bit in between everything. Not small enough for eye and not big enough for base application.

I loved this brush and have used for applying foundation and blending. It’s soft and easy to use….the actual brush is the best I’ve used but I have to write this review based on the fact that it has now snapped (at the handle) and am therefore very disappointed in the build of the brush overall. I do not spend £40 on a brush and expect it to snap and therefore be un useable after 9 months. I contacted the company I purchased it from (the Outnet.com) and Artis directly but although they have taken it on board have done nothing in way of rectifying so you just have to take it on the chin and say do I love it enough to spend another £40 on a brush that will only last 9 months? No…I don’t love it that much. I guess I won’t be the only one to suffer this problem so I definitely think it needs to be put out there that this is a design fault to allow people to be aware of it before purchasing.
I didn’t use it daily or with any heavy handedness, I have cheaper brushes that have lasted 5 years + its good and if you have money to spare and update your brushes every year then go for it. If not, be aware. I’m going to purchase the Iconic London brushes which appear to be similar and have great reviews. They are also half the price. I’ll see how long they last and review accordingly.

I have this whole set, and my absolute favorite is the number 6. I’m still kinda getting the hang of the non “paddle” type brushes, but I am finding that they are good for creams ala Colourpop shades or concealor.
But my friend the #6 is by far the best.
Pros
1)It is the bomb at blending out cream blush. Kind of a HG for this
2) You can switch colors with the cloth (60 bucks!!!) and do contouring
3) So easy to clean/ less likely to get dirty

1) $$$$
2) White handle gets grimey
3) Storage. They now FINALLY have a brush stand I think, but it’s 200 bucks

And one for powder use.
It’s simple…you need these brushes in your life!
They blend so effortlessly , make up looks air brushed
And you need less product aswell.
Yes they are on the expensive side. But these brushes are 100% worth the price tag!

These brushes are simply amazing. Soft, no shedding, easy to clean and stunning results. I can definitely tell the difference in my foundation and blush application with these. While expensive, these were totally worth the splurge!

After years of collecting rag-tag brushes and (admittedly) not caring for them well or knowing how to use half of them, I decided to invest in the Artis Brush Set from Net-A-Porter. I watched many makeup tutorials of You Tube, read reviews, articles, etc and decided that a nice set of brushes would be my birthday gift to myself. What an amazing purchase. First of all, they feel wonderful in your hand. Just a great feeling, like when you close a BMW door or hold an iPhone. They seem at first like tooth brushes, but there is a chart on their website for all the different uses, and each brush is able to multi-task (i.e. apply concealor, contour, etc). They are hands down amazing. They provide even application, help in tricky spots, and for the first time in my life I have mastered shading, contouring and even the smoky eye. What’s even cooler is that you can buy their “cleaning pad” for $25 and all you have to do is “wipe” your brush on there to clean them. No drying time, no shedding, no time spent re-shaping. So you can go from a dark color on the brush, clean, and then a light color with no problems. My only complaint is that the set is somewhat difficult to store and travel with, so I haven’t figured that part out yet. Right now, I am using my old brushes in my travel bag, and just using the Artis for everyday. Super innovative and worth the money.

Holy Grail of Foundation Brushes. I saw an internet ad on these and after a lot of study of the on line tutorials, etc. I decided to go for it. Customer service excellent, free shipping if you buy $75 or more. The packaging reminded me of the iPhone or iPad experience. the brush is incredible well made of very tightly packed bristles and they don’t “flop” … I tried both ways of using the well balanced, easy to hold (I am quite challenged) brush. First I put a dollop of my Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion on the back of my hand and dipped the brush lightly in it, smoothed and buffed it onto my face. The next day I used my fingers to pat the makeup first on my face, and then used the brush to buff it smooth.
Great results, it looked like air brushed makeup, and I used less make up for exponentially better results. I am the ultimate tom boy but need a polished natural look for my career, have no patience but I have bought some with the Artis Oval #6. I bought the linear #1, and will probably buy the eye shadow circle as well as another Artis Oval #6 for my Armani liquid blush.
