Ok so I bought this to apply full coverage liquid foundation… and it took a learning curve… but to do so (and boy is it FULL coverage), ya do little strokes up and down like a painter but MINI TINY up and down. You’ll Have Doll Skin. However.. I’ve decided I prefer a tradition synthetic soft paddle foundation brush or stippling or super soft kabuki (flat or round)… or the good ol blender.
My HG use for this brush is with MAC studio fix powder+ foundation. It gives you the MOST mileage ever I have SEEN with powder+!!!!! Doll skin. Again. Already in the end of April I am an NW30. (I have not been over nw20 in a while!). I bought 2 powder+ (one for home with this 191 and one for touch ups in purse). You will not need concealer believe me! As long as your skin is oily enough – which mine was not until it got acclimated to my Retin-A! (A year later skin back to oily self lol). I use the retinoid for aging – I’m 40. I still spf the dickens out of my skin I’m just constantly walking outside with the warm weather. I HIGHLY recommend the 191 w powder+. No weird learning curve technique needed! Just slap it on! Oh… to bring down neck /jaw slightly to blend like I always do, I use a fluffy powder brush since I’m not covering there. I’m just blending into pale neck.

I don’t care for this brush and I rarely use it. The application just takes too long. The brush itself is small, and to avoid streaking you must use very small strokes. For special nights out I use this brush because it does give flawless coverage if you are tedious enough but for everyday use it’s just not practical for me. It really does give an airbrushed finish if you have the time and patience to use it and clean it. Recommended for those that have these traits and need the coverage. Otherwise, there are more suitable alternatives.

The MUA showed me how it works, and it looked good so I bought it. However, when I used it myself, I found that it is very difficult to get right, as the bristles are quite stiff, so you end up with streaks. I think it would work better if using very small strokes, but hey, who has the time in the morning to do this. Stick to the 190 foundation brush or maybe the newer 193 (which I have not tried) which is angular.

This is without a doubt for me the best foundation brush ever! I already had the 187, 188 and 190 MAC brushes and some other foundation brushes by Chanel and Estee Lauder. When I saw this one in the store, I was so curious I decided to buy it. I was in love with this tool from the very first use and now I never reach for my other brushes anymore.
My HG foundation is the Estee Lauder Double Wear and with this brush I get the most perfect result. My skin looks like it has been airbrushed.
The brush itself has zero fallout, is very easy to clean and the bristles don’t take up much product so in the end working your foundation out with this brush will save you product!

I got this with Studio Sculpt foundation cause it was promoted at the same time. It’s like a usual paddle foundation brush but it’s not tapered, it’s extra flat, and the bristles are firmer.
PROS: The firmness is good, it’s got a “spring” action to it when it bends; it’s not floppy or smushy. The bristles are not overly soft too. MAC told me to use in short downward strokes, and that seems to work well enough. It is a bit like “painting the wall” and it isn’t streaky if done correctly. The strokes need to be SHORT and quick, like when stippling, the action of place/press/release/next is quick. Short strokes create minimal to no streaks and also blends some streaks together if you in a different direction. If that’s not enough, you can also press/pat the brush on it’s side into the skin to remove streaks. GossMakeupArtist says to mainly use this patting motion, as in quickly distribute product then pat everything, but I think short strokes work better. The brush absorbs a lot more when you pat and you get fuller coverage with strokes.
CONS: Can be annoying to clean. Whenever you wet the brush, the bristles in the middle stick together and then NOTHING will get them clean. Sure, you can get the brush clean enough so it can be used over and over, but the center is always dirty! And I’m not even talking about the ferrule, I mean 0.3cm from the tip and down, I measured it. I even diluted a cup of clarifying shampoo, stuck the 191 in, and tried working it underwater, and it was STILL DIRTY THERE. So to really get the 191 truly clean, you can’t get it that wet. This isn’t possible if the brush is really dirty, but if it’s dry and only the middle bristles are dirty, you can take a tiny bit of brush cleaner on your hand and swirl the brush on the flat side for a minute, or you can duplicate how you used the brush normally with cleanser to get cleaner deeper. As long as the brush starts off DRY, it should reach the middle bristles because they aren’t stuck together yet. And the 191’s performance with Studio Sculpt – it absorbs a MASSIVE amount product. I know it’s the 191 because if I apply with my fingers, I get high coverage whereas with the 191, it’s light/natural looking. You know when you first apply foundation, it might look too thick/heavy, but once it’s blended, it looks lighter and better? With the 191, it does a bit of that blending/absorbing/lighter thing WHILE spreading it so you lose a lot of coverage and product. If you want it to absorb less, just run it under a fosset and squeeze/shake excess out. Simply spraying the brush does nothing, it must be damp. SS (and most makeup) is water resistant anyways, so the water acts as a barrier on the bristles the brush doesn’t absorb as much and works better. Plus with the center bristles “stuck together”, less product is prone to getting inside them.
OVERALL: The reason I’m giving it a 1 is because I don’t think it’s worth the MAC price. Had I known this, I would have returned it while I could. But I’ve had it for too long, so I might as well use it. It works just fine however, it’s not a bad brush. If you like the 190 you might like this spin on it. There must have been some need to introduce an upgrade/alternative. The straight edge works fine too. A certain wholesale cosmetics site has it a lot cheaper and it’ll probably be there forever (hint hint if you want to try it).

I was eyeing this brush since the day it made its debut but ermmmmm, I guess it’s good for applying moisturizer or primer or a mask or the studio mist foundation thingy it was released with some year ago. I tried applying my MUFE Face & Body with this brush and it was a huuuuge disappointment. Talk about messy and streaky and ughhhh. The bristles are lovely but too thin/flimsy, and the size is a bit too small for a quick foundation application for me. Made of synthetic fibres.

My MA recommended this brush specifically for the Studio Sculpt foundation, I am not sure still if the squared angle is best for foundation application. The synthetic bristles are very soft but too soft and a tad on the shorter side. I just wish it was a little denser. My hunt for a good foundation brush continues..

To be honest there are better foundation brushes, but then again that is down to personal opinion.
I bought this brush after having my mu done by an ma at MAC and i was really impressed with the finish she got with it (i didn’t think about the fact she used a 188 to blend) and bought it. However, i don’t know if it was the fact i had only used sponges in the past but my foundation never gets the right affect. granted it could be the clinique foundation but i think this brush has no blending in element to it whatsoever. I would suggest this brush if you weren’t stuck for time to put on your make up and you were happy to go over again with a blending brush for example the 187 or the 188.. However if you want a brush that ”blends as you go” this isn’t the brush for you.
With regards to the price i think in comparison to other MAC face brushes it isn’t badly priced.
i would repurchase this brush as now i have the 187 and get the effect and finish i want.

This was my first MAC brush I ever bough by recommendation from my MUA. It’s a good quality brush as it’s lasted for quite awhile but as a foundation brush It left streaks on my face and my foundation set before I could blend them away. I’ve found that this brush is helpful for applying face primer so at least I can use it for something and it’s not a complete waste… but as a foundation brush there’s way better brushes out there.

I picked this up when I bought the Studio Sculpt. What I use it for is to target certain areas and the brush is a little stiffer then a foundation brush. So it works better in getting into certain areas. I find that it works amazing with the Studio Sculpt foundation. I use it on my red areas and it helps to cover them up with ease. This will be my favorite tool!
