I won’t go into too much detail as julia178 before me has done a fantastic job covering every angle of this relatively new launch from La Mer. What I will do is share my own experience of using this. I love and have been using the Hand Treatment itself on & off for over a decade and a half now and although not really in my budget I do save up and treat myself to it every now and again. During my most recent purchase of it at the La Mer counter the SA gave me a small sample of the serum to try out after telling me all about its ‘benefits’, hoping I would cave in and say “Great I’ll have one of those too please” (didn’t happen so she conceded with giving me a sample instead). I used it diligently for 2 weeks layered underneath my Hand Treatment application until my sample was finished. It has a thin gel-cream texture and leaves my hands feeling very silky, no doubt due to the high number of silicones in this. My hands didn’t feel any more hydrated for using this. In short I didn’t notice any difference whilst using other than the ‘brightening’ effect which is probably due to the ‘Niacin’ in here and a couple of other brightening ingredients that are not in the Hand Treatment itself (although that one does have a few different brightening ingredients of its own). And by brightening I mean my hands looked visibly lighter – good if you have any kind of discoloration, not so good if you’re working hard to keep your hands tanned!
Do I think this is yet another add-on that isn’t really necessary? In short: yes. La Mer have a knack of bringing out add-ons in what has now become one overwhelmingly large collection of products. I’ve had the privilege of getting to try many of them and can tell you there are only a handful of ‘core’ products that are worth the money. I enjoyed using my serum sample but I’m not convinced I would ever go out and purchase it.

The Rejuvenating Hand Serum was launched in the US in November ’18 and the company describes its properties as follows on their website: La Mer brings its serum know-how to one of the body’s most exposed – and expressive – areas. This sumptuous, silky-soft treatment targets renewal and brightening as never before. Delicate skin is strengthened and appears instantly radiant. With use, hands look and feel softer with visibly reduced discoloration. How to use: Morning and night, gently massage 1-2 pumps into skin. Follow with the Hand Treatment for ultimate healing hydration.
Looking at the ingredients it’s obvious that this gel is mainly based on various types of silicones, alongside some miracle broth, a few natural oils and several different plant extracts. Ah yes, plus a low percentage of Hyaluronic acid for good measure.
I have used this product for two days so far, applying multiple times a day after washing my hands, and before going to sleep at night.
Let’s start with the packaging: The hand serum comes in a round, light green colored, opaque plastic pump bottle (see uploaded stock picture). The pump performs well in dispensing the right amount of product without wasting it. I like the packaging and gave it five stars.
Onto the application: Upon spreading 2 pumps of the light peach colored fluid on the hands, the silicones define the feel of it: The skin surface appears smoother and softer and the formulation sinks in rather quickly. I applied the serum to my hands about a minute after washing and drying them. I do have relatively dry hands so the serum alone didn’t provide enough moisture for my liking.
Therefore, as recommended by La Mer, I used the La Mer Hand Treatment on top of the serum and the combination felt a bit more hydrating. Ultimate pampering, healing hydration? Unfortunately, not so much according to my experience.
On the plus side, I was pleased that my hands did not feel greasy or tacky, so for daytime use this is very practical. I especially like the fact that La Mer didn’t add any perfume. On the other hand, the hydrating effect of the serum did not last through one hand washing. So overall while this is not a bad product per se, I wouldn’t be able to use it on its own, without an additional cream product on top. The Rejuvenating Hand Serum retails for $110 per 1.7oz/48ml, the La Mer Hand Treatment is $90 for 3.4oz/100ml which means a $200 investment for both and even then I feel that the effect is less intensely hydrating than what I am looking for. I have always found that La Mer’s Hand Treatment is on the lighter side, and therefore I only used it during the day. If La Mer were to offer a richer hand cream in the future, which would be a formulation along the lines of their classic moisturizing cream, then maybe this serum would give a more hydrating effect that I am after for my dry hands. For now, I will try using the serum underneath, followed by a water-in-oil formulated hand cream and see if it works better. For anyone looking for a light product, this is worth sampling at the counter. For dry, even parched skin in colder climates the serum isn’t likely to protect or heal as advertised. Overall, I find this product overpriced and therefore I will use up my bottle, but won’t repurchase.
