I’m very conflicted about this product. I have noticed that it gives me a deeper, longer lasting tan than other lotions. But it takes a little it to notice anything and it’s ungodly oily. Be prepared to shower after because this ish will get on everything and anything you touch. Other than that it’s not too bad!

I have pink undertone so when I tan I never have that rich brown color. Until I start to use this. It helps with getting tan faster and what I love most is nice color I am getting. I didn’t use spf under so I burnt like crazy. Be careful.

I do agree with some other reviewers – it’s hard to tell if this stuff actually helps you tan better or if it just stains your skin like a self tanner. But I do notice a deeper tan when I use it. I also quite like the tropical smell.
Here’s the thing with it though – for me, at least, this is NOT a lotion you use every day. This is a tanning lotion that you use when going out to tan. I only use it on days where my plan is to lay out side for a couple hours tanning. I put sunscreen on and then this on top. And I do find it works well.
But it’s not jut your usual moisturizer that you’d wear everyday. Far too greasy for that.

I´m completely surprised by all the positive review for this product. They were what actually compelled me into buying it, and I have seldom been so harshly disappointed. This is not only a fail for me in terms of that it doesn´t do what it says (I used it three times before throwing it away, but no intensified tan whatsoever), but it also smells more than just a bit unpleasant and coats the skin in an oily film that doesn´t ever sink in (and doesn´t feel moisturizing, just stays on top of the skin) – just what you DON´T need on a hot summer day…couldn´t bear to use it anymore, so I threw it away, which is pretty rare for me.

I rarely used this as a self tanner so my review is a bit different. I used this mainly as an after-shower lotion to try and use it up. I did notice I got slightly tanner. This is oily and feels moisturizing. It Feels good as long as it’s not too hot. If you are sweating with this on it’s uncomfortable because it feels so greasy. I was attracted to this because it has mostly good ingredients. Other reviews say it has mineral oil, but I don’t see that listed. Maybe it was reformulated. I looked up potassium iodide with no real answers on whether it’s safe for the skin.

Amazing lotion! I tan naturally very easily but tend to peel afterward. This moisturized my skin and gave me a beautiful long lasting deep tan! Love this stuff…oh and it smells amazing!

LOVE this stuff. I usually put on my SPF lotion first and wait about 30 minutes before applying Maui Babe and it works like a dream. It’s a bit runny so you don’t need to lather it on – just a thin layer works fine. It gives me such a natural glowy tan that I absolutely love. What’s great about it is that you develop colour very quickly after using it. By far the best (and well-priced) tanning lotion on the market.

Firstly, this stuff certainly works in terms of giving you a great tan and for that reason I would definitely buy it again. I am fair skinned and it usually takes two week-long holidays abroad with lots of tanning in my garden in between to build a decent tan. However, with Maui Babe I came back from one week’s holiday with a gorgeous all over tan, the best tan I’ve ever had without a shadow of doubt and it was so even.
HOWEVER – it’s very very questionable as to whether the tan you are getting from this product is a natural melanin tan or a stain. The reason I say this is because Maui Babe contains potassium iodide which supposedly reacts with heat (in this case from the sun) to produce iodine, which stains anything it comes into contact with (including your skin) with a yellowy brown colour! It could also produce the same reaction from UV light, although this is just a guess as I haven’t found any science to back that up… Potassium iodide itself is a white powder but it can react to produce iodine, which is yellow/brown.
People used to mix iodine with baby oil when tanning in the sun to stain their skin and get a deeper tan…so I would guess that the reason Maui Babe works so well is because, in addition to the natural tan you are getting from the sun anyway, you are also getting a top up from the iodine when you go out into the sun (or the direct/intense heat from the sun).
Sure the company that makes Maui Babe claims that the lotion accelerates the skin’s tanning process naturally with their ‘secret recipe’ and that it is ‘not a stain or self-tanner’ but they don’t seem like the most reputable company in the world (even though reputable stores seem to sell the product now) and without significant research and testing, it would be difficult to prove this is or isn’t the case. They probably aren’t even aware of the science behind their own product.
So if this is the case, does anyone care that the tan they are getting from this is actually a very real looking fake tan? I hate most fake tan because it looks bad, it’s streaky and the colour is orange but with Maui Babe you are still getting a great, real looking tan. However if it means damaging your skin in the process to activate the iodine, is it worth it? At least normal fake tan doesn’t damage your skin (other than the chemicals in it of course).
I might test my theory by putting the product on my arm when I reorder my bottle this summer and blasting a hair dryer on it for a while to see if it does anything! If it turns my arm brown, I think that’s evidence that it’s a heat reaction producing the iodine, and I might just use this trick in future to get the Maui Babe tan without the UV damage 😉

This product does it’s job. It browns you incredibly fast. It works really. Well. My only complaint is. The smell. It’s in describe it’s tolerable but I wouldn’t go out on a date wearing this. And of course the mineral oil If I were to apply this too my face I’d apply the smallest! I repeat the smallest! Amount. This will! Clog your pores. If you do apply this to your face I would wash it off immediately after! Or even shower!
