I love shea butter but don’t use it as often as I should because it takes a little time to work it into the skin. I love coconut oil but it leaves my skin shiny and isn’t hydrating enough in the winter, and sometimes I don’t want to smell like coconut. This is the best of both worlds! The texture is perfect – firm but creamy like a whipped butter and easy to work with. It says it is unrefined but I am not picking up any coconut scent, and I haven’t gotten any smoky smelling shea butter from Alaffia in a few years.
Yes, this is no different than what can be made at home, but I don’t want to deal with the mess or take the time to whip my own shea butter & coconut oil together. i also find it reasonably priced as that big blue store of consumerism sells it at around 2/3 of the price on Alaffia’s website.

I bought a jar of the unscented Everyday Shea shea butter from a local natural foods store a few years ago. It smelled very smoky, but at first I didn’t mind because I was happy to see this on the shelf. I have used many of Alaffia’s other products before, plus I have gotten repackaged mystery butter labeled as shea elsewhere, and I have confidence in Alaffia’s labeling. I was able to cover up the most of the scent in blends with essential oils, but it seemed to get worse over time. A YouTube reviewer referred to it as “stale cigarette butts” and she wasn’t far off. So my first experience with this particular product wasn’t that good. I liked the feel and texture of it, but just couldn’t stand the smell. I ended up throwing half of the jar away and couldn’t return it because it was way past the time limit of making a return.
Recently I found a jar of the unscented that smelled good – a faint, slight nutty aroma, just like shea butter should smell. Hooray! I am assuming Alaffia had a bad batch, or something went wrong. I don’t know, perhaps the recommendations that I found on the internet to leave the lid off to help with the smell actually made it go bad faster. I should have written to them, but feared their response would be just like any others when you get a batch of something that just seems a little off: to return it to where I purchased it.
So my recommendation is, if you can buy it locally, to open the jar and smell it. If you don’t like the smell, don’t buy it. If you do, buy it and you will be getting a generously sized jar of absolute creamy bliss for your skin that won’t break you out and is excellent at moisturizing and healing.
Yes, there are cheaper offerings, but Alaffia is one of the few companies who are making an honest positive ethical impact on their employees. Their shea butter is Fair Trade certified and processed without using any chemicals, and I know I am getting the real thing and not just some repackaged and relabeled mystery butter.
My ultimate test of using shea butter is recent, as I used it to protect around my nose and lips during a nasty head cold. I spooned a little off into a small jar for my purse to use on on my face after each time I blew my nose and washed my hands. It helped keep everything chap free and I didn’t get any soreness around my nose. I like how it isn’t as shiney as other butters or oils, as it leaves my skin with a slight glow and feeling moisturized but not greasy.
I also use it as an intensive night treatment for my feet (the good ol’ slather them up and put on socks). Every bit of the shea was absorbed into my skin and I woke up to soft feet.
I am back in June of 2017 to say thay I finally decided to toss the jar I last reviewed because after almost 2 years the prior jar started smelling yucky. I used it mainly on my face, hands, and lips so I can never seem to use up a whole jar, it would probably stay fresh longer if I transfer some off to a smaller container (and put the rest in the fridge) but I get lazy… so I recommend doing this if you want to be frugal. For the inexpensive price and generous size, this is certainly worth trying.
