There is a lot of disappointment about this product because it is widely misused. This is not a product that The Body Shop has come out with to specifically darken your foundation with. This is a product for contouring using The Body Shop Moisture Foundation (this was the foundation the sales assistant showed me blends best with this). Basically, you add a drop or two to the foundation and contour with it. Lightning drops are used for highlighting.
This way it truly works and blends out like a dream. The darkening drops have a heavy cool grey undertone and are perfect for creating shadows on the face.
IF you still want to darken your existing foundation with this product, I HEAVILY advise you not to use more than:
1-1.5 medium sized drops of this product on warm foundations (if you’re warm) because you will end up looking dull and ashy.
2 medium sized drops of this product of cool foundation (if you’re cool) because you will:
a)not look bronzed like the rest of your body (given that you want to darken it because you’re tan) but greyish.
b) look dull if you just want to darken it.
3-4 medium sized drops is the maximum amount you would need to neutralise the orange undertone of a foundation AND darken it if you’re cool but have a warm light foundation shade.
But be warned that this does not work with all foundations! I have tested out some of the ones I have and here’s a list of ones it works with and some of the ones it doesn’t blend well with:
DO:
Diorskin Nude
Dior Forever
Bourjois Healthy Mix
L’Oreal True Match
YSL Teint Touche Eclat (old formula)
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk
Estee Lauder Double Wear Light
DON’T:
Dr.Jart Ctrl-A Beauty Balm
Milani Conceal and Perfect
Rimmel Lasting Finish with Comfort Serum
L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte (it blends but fails to apply well with a BeautyBlender)
Revlon Colorstay Normal/Dry
So the best thing to do is take your desired foundation and bring it with you to the TBS store to try it out. From what I have recognised this product doesn’t really work well with high coverage foundations or really creamy foundations. It’s best blended with liquids and light to medium coverage ones.
For me, this is not a product I would use much or repurchase since I have cream contouring products I like much better. But if I need a quick fix this would be great. This is also good when I’m in between foundation shades and my tan is wearing off. 1 drop of this and I’m all set. But this is not HG or winner at any point.
However, for the price with the TBS discount this would last me a lifetime. So it’s nothing I regret.
