This is really great to have on the shelf for the right audience but you need to learn how to use it.
**** This product is for ****
– Those who can’t find the right shade tinted moisturizers or a tinted moisturizer that doesn’t irritate your skin (like me!)
– Those who are picky about how a product feels on the skin and can’t find the right one (like me!)
– Those who don’t want to get different products for different seasons, different coverage goals. Generally or when on vacation. (like me!)
**** How to work with this ****
– Find the right moisturizer or primer! It might take some trial and error. Some moisturizers’ ingredients might lead to oxidization. Some might be too thick or too liquidy. If you get a bad result the first few tries, don’t give up or think it’s because the pigment drops are no good.
– It’s not just how much BIY drops you use, it’s also how much moisturizer you use. I watched some YouTube review videos for this and in my opinion some used more moisturizer than needed. (Remember the review videos are usually the bloggers’ first experience with the product. It’s of course easier to make mistakes with ‘customization’ products at our first try.)
– MIX WELL. When we use liquid foundations, we are always told to “shake well.” The same applies to this. I suggest mixing with the moisturizer on something that won’t soak in the product. Not your skin basically. Anything else, including a plate would work.
– Don’t stay limited to Clinique’s suggestion like “1 drop for this, 2 drops for this.” You might do fine with less than half a drop, you might get better result with more than what Clinique suggests. It depends on what kind of coverage you like, your skin tone, and your moisturizer.
**** Potential bad side ****
The undertone thing. If you’re going for sheer-medium coverage, because you use a small amount for that, there’s no problem about the undertones. But if you’re going for full coverage and you have pink undertones, you will probably not get the rosey finish you would prefer. I’ve used a few different Clinique foundations and found the lightest shades for cool undertones still have a more neutral-undertone finish. The same happens with BIY.
**** Bonus good side ****
Clinique products are generally suitable for sensitive skin. I had no irritation, no pimple.. no problem with this.

Tried 125 and that is a closer match to my skintone, but I cannot get anything but sheer coverage no matter how many drops I use. Since it looks like I’m using nothing I can’t get on the bus as to WHY I’m using it.
Super disappointed in this. I could handle the sheer to medium coverage this gives and I love that it gives a person so much flexibility but the colors were so orange! I tried 2, 115 and 120 & both were orange. Dropper bottle was great and everyone has commented on the small amount you get for the price. I will try another brand because I love the idea.

Ok so i only came around to trying this because it was on a 50% sale at sears (since the store is closing). Read a bit about it, then tried it the next morning. What i did was i mixed 1 pea sized dollop of my simple skin moisturizer with 2 drops of this BIY thingy. Then i rubbed it in with my fingers, the way i would a moisturizer. It gave me about low medium coverage which i personally prefer, and that concoction gave me a natural matte finish.
I wore it all day to test it out (i didnt set or anything coz i wanted to know how it held up on it’s own). At the 6 hour mark it still looks good, starting to get a tad shiny on my nose which is totally normal (i have normal- slightly oily tzone skin). Took it off at around 12 hour mark still looking decent, it worn off nicely, nothing splotchy or breaking up. My face didnt get any greasier or dryer. So, :
Pros:
I love the natural finish and how light it feels, literally feels like i only put on moisturizer. Perfect for summer/lazy days.
The tiny bottle and how easy it blends with fingers will make it useful for traveling.
Doesnt break me out.
It doesnt transfer too much. (I was blowing my nose constantly but there was still remnants on my nose hiding the redness.
Cons:
Price. Now i got this on a really good deal but when i run out, im not gonna repurchase Coz for CAD $44, i’ll only be getting 10ml of product which brings me to my next point.
I dont like that im only getting 10ml of product. Now i know they say it’s pigment or whatever but still, 10mls?really? For that price? *cries*
Not enough shade variety (IMO). I got 115 which when not mixed with anything looked hella orange, when mixed with my moisturizer it looked about the same as MUFE ultra hd shade y245.
I would recommend getting it while it’s on sale tho, super handy for traveling and it’s a good product.

One star removed for the ridiculously small bottle!!! However, the product itself is magic! I purchased this in 110 which looked quite dark when I swatched it on my hand. Once blended in to my SPF 50+ moisturiser, it was an ivory shade on my skin. I put 3 drops of this into my Natio SPF 50+ moisturiser and only used my Beauty Blender to do a tiny bit of blending. I mostly applied it the same way I would apply moisturiser or sunscreen which is in sweeping motions using my hand. It completely transforms into the product you combine it with, but gives that wash of colour. 3 drops gave light/moderate cover when mixed with a high SPF moisturiser. The drops themselves are very watery in consistency, but you could see how pigmented they were. As I said earlier, the bottle is tiny enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts. It retails in Australia for $55, so I was not impressed when I saw how much that actually brought me. The entire bottle is .34 ounces. Anyway, I will be repurchasing as it is such a versatile product.

I mix this with a tinted sun screen to amp up the coverage. Great solution for summer. Will see how it transitions into the fall/winter.

I bought the BIY pigment drops in the hopes of ‘creating’ my perfect foundation. I mixed them with everything from moisturizer to tinted BB cream. I could not get enough coverage regardless of what I used as a base or how many drops of the pigment that I used. I kept it in my makeup drawer for months before I figured out a great use. My skin color changes throughout the year, with the seasons. I am tan in the Summer and pale in the Winter. I buy foundation to match my natural, untanned skin and darker foundation to blend with it to get my perfect match throughout the year. I used up my darker foundation and was trying to use bronzer to match my skin until my order arrived. I just happened to add a few drops of the BIY, which i purchased in a darker shade, to my light foundation and it came out to be the perfect color. Even after my darker foundation arrived, i continued using the drops to darken my light foundation. So the BIY pigments drops did not do what they are advertised to do (allow me to create my own perfect coverage foundation out of moisturizer) BUT they are perfect for adjusting the color of your existing foundation! A little goes a long way so even though the bottle is tiny, it lasts a long time.

For ladies who loved Prescriptives Virtual Skin liquid foundation *before* the reformulation several years ago, you may want to give BIY a try. Blend 1-2 drops with a bit (1/2 teas or so) Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel and apply to face with fingers, gently rubbing in. Light to medium coverage, evens out skin tone, covers redness I have around the nose. I love that the combination of the drops and the gel moisturizer creates a foundation that sinks right into my skin, there’s no stickiness or any feeling of having makeup on at all. As per usual, I lightly applied finishing powder to my oily T-zone and was happy to see that area stayed matte hours later and didn’t develop that nasty pore enlarging weirdness that happens with other foundations. It’s been a long road to find a replacement for VS!! I am one happy woman 🙂

There is no possible way this will give you more than a sheer coverage. For women with perfect completions who just want a wash of color this would be a nice but pricey option. For those of us with any spots or discoloration I feel this is not the way to go. Even with several drops and using with different Clinique moisturizers it didn’t work out for me.

I received a sample of this from the Clinique counter 2 weeks ago. I took it home and it was like water. Either the samples they give out a botchy, because even as the lady was pouring the drops into the bottle it was spilling all over the floor and it just looked like water.
Also I felt like their were not enough colour options for my skin tone. The one I took home made my skin oily. Also, because they are blend it yourself, if you happen to pour too much which is possible with the flimsy bottle you will end up with too much coverage.
The whole concept is bizarre to me. If you want less coverage, just buy a low coverage foundation, if you want full coverage, buy a full coverage one instead of blending colour into cream and getting an uneven result.
I just ended up staining my skin and then throwing the whole sample bottle in the bin.

I wear moisturizer with sunscreen (everybody hoping to stave off spots and wrinkles should) but oftentimes either my foundation goes patchy over it. Oh if only I could just tint my sunscreen!! I bought coverfx but I didn’t love it. It was equally pricey. I bought this and I adore it!! Well just FYI it turns my sunscreen into tinted moisturizer so very well. I’m pretty happy about it. But keep in mind if you are mixing it with white sunscreen lotion you should go a shade darker because it will mix up lighter. I had to get matched at the counter.
