I did not have high hopes for this, and tested on a whim, but DAMN. Shade 01 (totally out of my usual dark red comfort zone, and hideous in a tube), turned out to be the perfect warm taupe for my skin.
Makes me feel like a Kardashian (which is something I never thought I wanted until now)!
Very good staying power – much better than any of the dozen odd MACs I have rolling around.
Does tend to highlight dry patches (normal for matte, and not as badly as most others). Cheap, crappy tube, unfortunately.

I just bought 02 and 03 to keep in my purse. I really like these colors. Slight texture when you rub your lips together, but nothing terrible. I’m 53 and it’s hard to find a matte lipstick that doesn’t look dry on my lips. These don’t make them look dry at all. Love the 03. Wish they had even more colors.

I have three shades 03,04 and 09. I love 03, which is “Dusty Romance”! You have to buy these velvet matte lipsticks. They are so creamy and easy to apply, edges are beautiful if you are using a lipliner. Awww, I love it. They stay on all day long and are soooo cheap. Just love them! w

Seems to be a little trending right now, I guess it is because everyone is launching a lipstick and people are looking for affordable lipsticks. I can’t complain about this lipsticks. They aren’t bleeding, but to be safe, I would apply it with a lipliner. Lovely colors.

Cheap, doesn’t dry out my mature lips as most matte lipsticks do, creamy formula and stays on!!

Packaging looks a little cheap though, but the lipstick is just fine. The essence matte velvet lipsticks are about 5 dollars each but the quality is AMAZING. I would spend a dollar more to get a beautiful packaging 🙂.

I love the texture; it is very creamy and glides on smoothly. The colors are gorgeous and pigmented. It has a beautiful smell and stays on for the whole day. It would recommend them!

One of my fave lipstick formulas. It’s so comfortably-wearing for a matte. It isn’t the mattest of the mattes out there, it’s a touch on the satin side, but definitely not high-shine or glossy. Goes on so smoothly it feels almost like a cream formula. Staying power is average-to-good, with only the center wearing away after several hours on my lips. I tend to rub my lips together a lot (nervous habit?) and this lipstick does not get patchy or anything when I do that–one of the reasons I love it so much. It wears away evenly and the darker colours leave a pretty stain behind.
I don’t notice a scent to these lipsticks but they do have a sweet taste. A real deal at their regular price, when they go on sale they’re a true steal. I hope e.l.f. keeps their Velvet Matte formula forever!

I bought this in ‘Ruby Red’, which looks like a slightly dark true red in the tube. I was a bit shocked to apply it, as it went on like a cherry red (almost a deep hot pink). It’s what I wanted Wet n Wild’s ‘Smokin’ Hot Pink’ to look like.
Given this is supposed to be a matte, I was surprised at how easily it glided on, although I had a bit of lip balm left over from the night. I’ll have to come back when I’ve tried it on totally bare lips.
I actually like the packaging of this! It’s sleek and inconspicuous, unlike the horrid shiny white plastic of some other e.l.f. offerings.
I’m disappointed by the color, but will hold on to this a bit to see if I can make it work.

I have the color blushing brown and its a very brown color, not much pink, which I thought it was going to be because of the word “blushing”. Im surprised at the quality of these lipsticks. Its smooth and rich, yet nice and matte. It doesnt dry out my outrageously dry lips either. And gotta love the price tag too. Im getting them all!

I should first clarify: the bottom is not a secret compartment lipbalm for you. It’s actually a tester. So unless you’re is pristine no finger prints I wouldn’t suggest using it. I think it’s kind of gross someone treating MU lipstick luckily that has never happened to me yet coz not a lot of ppl know about it.
I got blushing brown which is a lot darker than MLBB venturing into chola territory but I love it!! I have always loved browns since I remember Momma forgetting her lipstick on a trip (my cousin was being.born’d & going to a DS I wanted her to buy hooker red (I was 4) I distinctly remember her getting brown & she got me my first lipstick (a clear cover girl which I used it up in 2 weeks coz I was applying like every 5 seconds). Blushing brown is definitely my fave of ELF’s traditional lipsticks by far (fave SMLC is Tea Rose). This even reminds me of my fave lip color of all time wnw 901B Mocha Bean that was the most perfectest lipstick ever n it was DC over 15 years ago but I have fond memories I did go through like 30 tubes of that & bonne Bell Hotti Biscotti ahhh the days when I had 2 lipstick colors & my entire MU fit in one shallow drawer half full w a lot of room to spare. Anyways I think I need to go back go Kroger and buy 1 of every color of a EVM & some back ups of blushing brown. I have finally find my perf chola brown replacement for wnw mocha bean its spot on a deffo dupe hallelujah thanks elf for making me very happy. This is a matte color no shininess it says to apply it with a lip brush for best results ok then come with a lipbrush I’m all like “what lipbrush?!!!” It applies fine from the tube chill this doesn’t dry out my lips and leech the moisture from my lips. And the final verdict is: #winning!!!!

This is an amazing formula for a matte lipstick. The color blushing brown is a milk chocolate colored. I found the lipstick to be nicely pigmented, creamy and hydrating.

EVM is a scented cross between a satin and matte finish in a cream lipstick base. A more classic waxier matte (which I prefer) is either NYX matte lipstick or NYX matte lip cream (doe applicator). EVM’s scent dissipates, but a distinct aftertaste a bit reminiscent of artificial sweetener lingers. Don’t buy if that sweet taste bothers you.
I am Asian, NC 30-35, olive skin, with heavilynpigmented lips with a naturally cool undertone. I purchased Party in the Buff, Cheeky, Blushing Brown and Vampy Violet. Out of these four, the only one i might consider repurchasing is Blushing Brown, a brown version of MLBB. Edit: will not repurchase due to taste of product.
1. Party in the Buff A light pink nude for someone with a fair, less yellow complexion than me.
2. Cheeky a possible candidate for MLBB if you are paler than me.
3. Blushing brown. warmer than NYX Maison. Browner than my MLBB, WnW barely legal.
4. Vampy violet – more matte and dry than the others – maybe it’s the deeper pigment
If you want a cool taupe nude lip (my preference) try NYX matte in Buerre/Butter.
Note: the colored bottom pops off to reveal a matching tinted lip balm.

This formula is amazing and quite unique. It’s the softest matte I’ve ever used and doesn’t dry up the lips, while also drying down to a matte finish with strong colour and staying power. It is, however, not the mattiest-looking matte I have ever seen, but I don’t consider that a bad thing (the site identifies it as “semi-matte” which I find a happy medium). I have the shade 10 Greedy Coffee, a muted browny-red, and I really liked how it was a colourful but neutral-looking shade. I will definitely go back for more, and the price is typical essence- great value.

Recently, Essence released the Velvet Matte lipstick range, which I believe is replacing the Matt Matt Matt range. Now, I loooooove the Matt Matt Matt lipsticks, but the improvements made in the Velvet Matte range are huge!
I purchased the shade Greedy Coffee, which is a pretty, medium-dark terracotta. The color is gorgeous. It’s got that deep, earthy tone that I love, but has a tad bit of coolness to it that keeps it from pulling too orange. I’ve never really used a color like this before, so I can’t really think of any dupes, but it’s very unique.
The formula is a real standout. In a way, I feel Essence has a sort of revolutionary formula with this range. It applies sooooo creamy with no tugging at all, and over time, settles down to a truly velvety finish. I find that most mattes, no matter how creamy they may apply, tend to just feel a bit dry rather than soft and velvety, but these are comfortable and smooth throughout wear. As this lipstick dries down, it really morphs into a super long-wearing finish that doesn’t appear clumpy, cakey, or flaky. My lips never look parched while wearing this lipstick, and they never feel super dry either. It does need to be applied after eating, but that seems to be par for the course with any non-liquid lipstick formula. That being said, it outlasts any other stick formula lip color that I’ve tried.
The packaging is cute but a tad bulky, as it’s a stout hourglass shape. I do enjoy that the cap is color-coordinated to the lipstick shade, but it’s not an accurate depiction. But, if nothing else, the shape of the tube and the colored cap allow for easy identification in my makeup bag, so there’s that. The bullet does swivel all the way down, and the cap feels secure, so no points off really on packaging for me. As long as the packaging is secure, that’s all that really matters to me.
These are $4 at Ulta, which is an incredible price for such a great lipstick. Plus, you get nearly 3.7g of product, which exceeds the amount you get with most other brands. $4 for a vegan, cruelty-free, high-performing lipstick, AND you get more of it?! Sign me up!
I’ll be heading to Ulta today to pick up additional shades. (If there’s one negative, it’s that I can see a more diverse shade range, but perhaps they’ll expand on it as they see how well the first release does.) Well done, Essence!
Edit: Picked up Dusty Romance (GREAT KVD Lovecraft dupe!!) and Donuts Go Nut (brown-hued nude and what kind of a name is that?!). Both are amazing shades and perform just as beautifully as Greedy Coffee, however the Donuts Go Nut tube seems to have less lipstick in it. The bullet is thinner than the other two shades that I have. I thought the first one I grabbed was a fluke so I exchanged it, and the second tube had the same issue. So Essence may want to check their molds for that one!
