I was hoping these would be a good cruelty-free alternative to the similar velvet matte lip pencils from NARS now that NARS has resumed animal testing. Unfortunately, I only got to use mine twice before the entire product fell apart, with the colored portion of the lipstick falling out of the body of the pencil and shattering on my bathroom floor. There aren’t a ton of colors and mine (LieLack) wasn’t really true to the color it looked like it would be on the cap, but it was pretty anyway. That said, the formula goes on smooth, isn’t overly drying, is comfortable, and wears off evenly. For around $2.50 it might be worth a try, but don’t count on it lasting long.

I was very hopeful for these! I bought 4. In general, their colors are not always true to packaging & some lack in pigment.
1) Toffee Frappe: this is a horrible under-pigmented translucent nude color that applies in patchy, uneven chunks. I can see my lips underneath. Has a crayon smell, too…
2) Looking for Truffle: MY FAVORITE! Color is deep rose, applies evenly, great for everyday cus it matches my skin tone so well!
3) Hickory Smoked: beautiful color but applied so unevenly that it made it look like I hadn’t exfoliated my lips before application!
4) Charred Cherry: This is a weird color. I thought it’d be mauve-plum like the packaging, but it turned out to be a deep fuchsia. I may or may not keep this one since it applies well & I don’t have a color like this yet, but I’m uncomfortable wearing this color.

from walgreens cardboard display, a slender twist up crayon in a black matte finish with end cap color of product package. I have “charred berry.” looks a neutral tone plummy deep mauve on end cap. l heaved an irritated sigh when i saw the actual bullet is brighter with orchid-tones.
i find i can best pull off neutral to slightly warm /slightly cool colors, and anything “orchid” usually looks bad on me. turns out this is the first orchid i can wear, so that erased my initial disappointment. This can be worn densely or it blots down to a mlbvmb – my lip but very much better. as i mature, i find too- dark a color to be aging. this hint of orchid keeps it from looking too somber, and bridges the space between summer’s bright true colors and fall’s riper shades. this shade would be a great wading pool into the deeper waters of the more intense palette you crave, but don’t recognize yourself in.
i wish it had more of a lasting stain effect, but it wears off evenly. the formula is very comfortable on the lips, not tacky, heavy or overly drying.

Update 2/2016: Wet n Wild has been reformulating a lot of their core products recently. Apparently they also jettisoned Fergie because several of her branded WnW products are either gone or relabeled. I saw several new shades of the Velvet Matte Lip Color recently and although the packaging appears the same, it no longer says “Fergie” on it. I’ve added a new review on MUA to reflect that.
My Walgreens also “clearanced” the old shades out. It does not say it was reformulated but because I liked the concept of these (and because there was a BOGO sale), I picked up some of the new shades to try.
I got four of them (Charmed Cherry, Berry Tales, Lie Lack, Hickory Smoked; L to R in the pic). First of all, the lip color bullets were all securely fastened. Not one of them fell out of their case. Pigmentation is definitely better, particularly for the darker colors (these are all one swipe). Lasting power improved to about 5 hours leaving a slight stain behind, most noticeably with the darker colors. Finish is still a lovely velvet matte. These won’t make you forget about NARS, but they were certainly a big step up in quality from the Fergie version.
I assume Wet n Wild will be introducing more colors in the future. I hope they keep this formulation! Bumping my review up to 4 lippies overall with a big increase in packaging to 4 lippies.
