As much as I love this shade, I find that you have to put on a few “coats” to get the true color. It seems to look just as great with my lighter olive skin as it does on my sisters darker bronze tones. This with simple black eye liner/mascara is one of my favorite night out looks now. Coven is a perfect name for it as you can really get that witchy and seductive look! Haha! Stays on very well (once pigment is achieved), smells great, taste great, and of course the studded tube is the coolest lipstick packaging ever!!

I really adore the color of this shade; on my fair skin it gives me a beautiful ethereal look. If you wear this color, you really have to make sure your eye makeup isn’t too warm. It looks weird with that. The lasting power is typical, its alright.
Anyways, the formula kind of does underperform. It goes on a little patchy. HOWEVER – I rated it three lippies because my lips are not pigmented at all. So basically, it doesn’t look patchy on me with enough work. It looks like the color in the tube. If your lips are pigmented I would reccomend to stay away. The finish is matte, but I don’t find it to be drying at all.
Overall, if you find this color TDF and willing to work a bit its worth it. However, I will not repurchase because I’m sure there’s cheaper alternatives.
Update 9/5: I’ve noticed that the lipstick has gotten less dry and creamier. Dunno, but it works better now.

FINAL UPDATE:
Great Alternative: Lorac Goddess (less blue toned, more mauve, but still in the color family)
Dupes: I discovered NYX lipsticks in Power and Castle which are similar dupes. If you want to play with this type of “can be hard to wear lavender shade” just start with those. For $3.99 each, they are much more affordable, they apply easier and they are very close dupes.
UPDATE: The lady at Sephora said the more unique/odd shades have been breaking like Coven did on me. She said the more standard shades are better. I have Lovecraft & so far so good.
UPDATE: Just don’t. So sad I liked the color. I was about to revisit my review & bring it down a notch because it keeps going on very patchy. But before I did that, I wanted to try it one more time to be sure. When I opened the tube the lipstick FELL OUT! I have one other shade from this line I love but given this incident I might be returning both. But Coven is definitely going back. I stored it & treated it like every other lippie I have. This has never happened to me in my 20 yrs of makeup use.
ORIGINAL POST: This is a fascinating color, but hard to pull off. Applied lightly it is a pale/nude lavender shade…more mod than MAC’s Lavender Whip. Applied with a stronger hand Coven can be down right costume makeup like (a wee bit corpse like). I wear this applied very lightly to my naturally mauve colored lips & wear with Full of Joy blush and it is really nice…intriguing and makes my brown eyes pop. I tried it on in Sephora before I bought it and two sales ladies complimented me on the shade as I wore it around the store to see if I liked it.
I hated the way this looked on my hand when I swatched it (it looks like theater makeup…not a street wear color) and almost didn’t agree to try it on. Then I thought, “I hunted this shade down, let’s try it”. When she first put this on my lips I still wasn’t thrilled but it didn’t look as bad as it did on my hand (she applied lightly). Intrigued, but undecided I took a selfie to see how the world saw it. It looked really pretty in and ice princess kind of way. I am MAC Nw20, deep soft winter, brown eyes, mauve lips. This color can go horribly wrong if applied like a normal lipstick…go lightly.
Available at Sephora for about $20, packaged in a black studded lipstick case (stubby, studded and short). Coven does not apply very evenly. This would definitely require some help from MAC Prep and Prime. I hope the other shades apply more evenly.
