My perfect nude everyday lipstick. Very smooth and hydrating on my lips. Has a bit of sheen to brighten my lips and is a very wearable colour. Definitely will be a repurchase once I finish it.

I love everything about it. I do, however, mix it with a lip balm with SPF.
It is a cool that looks more beige on my lips than on my hand on the photo.

Meh. The shade is beautiful–a cool, deep, plummy mauve with a little shimmer–but I find this lipstick lacking in most aspects. It’s not particularly creamy, the shimmer feels surprisingly rough on the lips when applying (although I don’t notice it when wearing it), it wears off unevenly (from the inside of the lip out), it collects in the corners of my mouth, the packaging is unnecessarily large and awkward, and the staying power is not great (especially considering that the formula is not particularly creamy). However, the shade is lovely, it’s opaque in one pass over the lips, it leaves a pretty stain behind, and it has no unpleasant smell or taste. This is so not worth the price. In fact, I have not been impressed with any of the few cosmetic items I’ve purchased from Tom Ford, and so the brand no longer interests me–a good thing, since I’ll be saving plenty of bucks to spend on other brands. I’d take Chantecaille Lip Chics over any Tom Ford lipstick any day.

So Vain is a beautiful shade introduced for Fall ’15, and a permanent part of the line.
My skin tone is a fair cool porcelain (NW15) and So Vain is a perfect match with its plummy mauvey tones. It’s a medium intensity shade, so it shows up well on my highly pigmented lips but it’s not too dark at all. But the most unique feature of this shade is its soft pearly shimmer. Not glitter or the usual kind of silver shimmer that I found can easily turn into a dreaded 80s revival look. So Vain has just enough of that pearliness that it adds depth and dimension to the lips so they look lush and full, but not obviously “shimmery” at all. I noticed the same “magic” in two other TF lipsticks – Cherry Lush and Alejandro/Slander, and I am delighted that So Vain also has it. The formula is more creamy than the other lip colors and yes, staying power is somewhat less. But to me it’s not been an issue because So Vain fades to a most beautiful stain. This is what I’m looking for in a high end lipstick: high quality luxe packaging, of course, but most importantly, a unique shade in a creamy formula that is comfortable to wear. $52 before tax.

This is a stunning plummy color with a beautiful opalescentish sheen. Love the initial fragrance — vanilla? — although it only lasts a minute or so. I have black hair, ivory skin and usually lean towards colors in the plum, berry, red or rose families. MAC “O” and Delux Norris gloss have been staples for years. I wanted to love this color, but the ridiculous price and lack of staying power will keep me from rebuying. The case closes with a satisfying click, and when the elegant color starts to fade, it’s still beautiful with almost a glow. If the color lasted longer, would say it’s a must have. Tried a lip primer and waited the obligatory minute before applying So Vain — still no help. Side note — The name, while almost the same as the fantastic Carly Simon song, could pair with any lippie — wonder why used for this one? Update: Love this, and (of course) it’s discontinued. The staying power has improved a bit, but it’s really the stunning color that keeps me coming back.
