Lipstick Queen is one of those Catch-22 brands. The colors of every single lipstick and lip liner is perfect, and when it’s your color, it stands out in a regal way. Hello Sailor is blue than turns to a fairyland berry on me, Butterfly Ball’s blue shimmer in Moment throws a new cast to a cool red, & Nude lip liner with anything makes every other liner look like a cheap Walmart brand. The emperor’s new clothes do involve real clothes, so to speak, it’s not much more than a summer nightgown & a pair of cotton drawers since it all quickly wears away to minimum, if any, product. Anything matte lasts way longer than everything shiny but you have to reapply it often (& remember to do it).
Give up even sipping iced coffee through a straw or carry it in your pocket near a reflective window or mirror and you can enjoy an afternoon with such beautiful, charming colors with depth I’ve never seen in another brand, and even those close are very expensive lipsticks with short staying power, a la Dior. **Sigh**
I’m a lipstick junkie, though, and while I’m huge fan of Revlon’s colorstay long-lasting, which is truly lip paint, I go through periods of willingness to keep it in my warm pocket and smear it on as often as I think about it (BTW, I’ve had stay Colorstay’s Stay Currant last, with fading to a sheer deep cool red, 24 hours after app & through sleeping on my face).
My review on all Lipstick Queen products is the same:
–Beautiful, true, universally-flattering colors. Butterfly Ball is a range of colors featuring a blue shift iridescent shimmer, which also make a nice topcoat over a matte color of any brand. Liners are densely pigmented and full matte, so dark colors are dramatic while light colors permit flexible match-ups with lipstick shade for added depth. Hands down the best colors on the market.
–All matte finishes last the longest, obviously. Anything glossy wears promptly after using a straw/smoking. Lipliners don’t have the staying power of Colorstay or IT cosmetics lipstaining lip liner, but they also don’t dry & flake at all. I don’t find any finish bleeds with neat application, but the glossier the finish, the more potential for bleeding & definitely smearing. No Lipstick Queen product offers a long-lasting finish as do Colorstay and Stila, for example. The line of lip stains offer a sheer wash of color that wears away quickly whether applied alone or underneath traditional lipsticks; application beyond a sheer wash of these requires patiently applying multiple sheer layers with drying time in between. Otherwise, the application is gloppy, will set & wear uneven with additional, undisturbed time to dry to matte & not smear.
–Prohibitively expensive, and wasteful in time spent to keep remembering to reapply it. Tube lipsticks get very soft in pants pockets & leave finishes that then wear off even faster. No issue for photoshoots or circumstances where you know you won’t be drinking, eating or smoking anything.

I decided to buy the Sinner version of Rouge because I love the Saint so much. Sadly, it did not work for me and it has to go back to Ulta. Thank goodness for a decent store return policy. I assumed that because it was called Rouge, it would be the same color as the Saint I have–just opaque and matte. But it is not the same color at all. Where Saint Rouge is a beautiful berry red–absolutely cool-toned–the Sinner version is neutral to warm-toned. There is a brown/orange color in the Sinner version that makes it appear more like a rust red than a berry red. I decided to go looking at swatches on the Internet of Sinner Rouge, and lo! I see that it is warm in the various swatches I saw. I should have done my homework.
Now, Sinner Rouge is not an unlovely color; it would work well I think on people with red or auburn hair. The texture is OK; I have been wanting to try matte for a while, and I think I might have to pass on that, sadly. Matte is for smooth, fuller lips–if you have lines or smaller lips, matte textures accentuate lines and make your lips look even smaller. I am wondering if any other pairings of Saint/Sinner lip colors are so completely different in tone in the LQ line… I was also shocked to see such an expansion of products at Ulta. Ms. King seems to be coming up with more gimmicks these days and really: $50 for a lipstick??? That packaging better have gold or diamonds or something. I suppose there are collectors out there who will cling to their pretty lipstick tubes until death do they part. I am personally not that much into packaging.
This Sinner Rouge reminds me a LOT of Jordana’s Matte Mystery. I don’t have that any more–again, it was too neutral warm for me–but if you want an inexpensive dupe of this LQ color, go for the Jordana. Seriously.

A short story:
When I was 17 years old, I decided to play around with my mother’s makeup when she was out running errands one day. I have always known about her love for lipsticks, and saw three Revlon Super Lustrous lipsticks in her makeup drawer: Sassy Mauve, Rosewine and Mauvy Night. The mauvy-pinks didn’t catch my eye, but boy did Rosewine! It was a beautiful red tinged with a dusty coral, never too bright nor too muted. I swiped it on and saw how my face lit up. I fell in love with lipstick and Rosewine upon first swipe. I asked my mom about it casually when she got home and she told me the colour didn’t do much for her complexion (her skintone is around NC25-30 while I am NC15-20), so she asked me if I wanted it. I was ecstatic and wore it for really quite some time BUT (there’s a BIG BUT)… Rosewine never stayed on for long, faded in a patchy manner leaving a lipstick ring (even with a lipliner, yes). I had a love-hate relationship with Rosewine in the end and the past five years, I have been searching for a substitute for Rosewine.
Fast forward to 2015:
One night I suddenly thought about Lipstick Queen. I had no idea why, perhaps I was browsing through her Poppy King x Boots No7 lipsticks on drugstore.com, and was reminded of her vintage style and trademark ‘red-lips’ look which I really adore. I have heard of this brand for a long time but never got round to trying it, just because, because. One click on Google and I found that Escentials stocks Lipstick Queen products where I live, and the next day after school I decided to pop by to check out her Sinner lipsticks (but Rosewine wasn’t even at the back of my mind haha).
I swatched my way through and eventually settled on Rouge. I felt an affinity with it and I decided to purchase it, along with Saint Hot Rose. I swiped it on in the ladies’ and my oh my, I was reminded of my first love – Rosewine, but touch more red, yet nevertheless lovely, lovely, lovely. A huge plus – Rouge Sinner fades evenly, even after oily meals and it does not dry out my lips too much. I don’t even need to use a lipliner with it. I just apply it straight from the tube, blot and lightly tap the lipstick on my lips again (like she advised). Chapstick helps with the dryness, and reapplication is easy. Rouge is a flattering vintage colour and I intend to wear it ever so often, either full-on or as a stain. It is beautiful, and I encourage everyone to check it out if they can. Thank you Poppy for this wonderful lipstick in the right shade (for me at least) and right formula. I intend to invest more in the collection you have curated, and I will recommend the Sinner range to everyone and anyone who wants to wear a full-on lipstick. And I recommend the shade Rouge for anyone who is looking for a Revlon Rosewine substitute, or a muted vintage red that is feminine and classy.

Rouge Sinner by Lipstick Queen is a Fabulous Red for 55+ – because it’s a warm red. This is not a bright blue red – nor is it an orange red. This is a warm tone red, with brown undertones in my opinion. I am a fair skinned woman with brown hair, which is a highlighted to a heavenly blonde color. I use Bobby Brown mauve lipliner and apply Rouge Sinner with a lip brush. I do believe Lip brush application is key to any lipstick staying power. ULTA has a great selection of LIPSTICK QUEEN Reds.

An ideal red for a retro 50′ s look.
Lipstick Queen has great colors, texture, and feel on the lips. Rouge Sinner is a brick red, just deep enough. I am fair, red hair, green eyes and this makes me feel like a 1950’s Madmen woman. Sexy and sophisticated matte lips. No scent/taste, not drying and long lasting. Did not turn pink/fuschia on me, stayed true color. Love it!

I had wanted this shade for over a year and finally indulged and ended up hating it. It looks like a mix of coral and red in the tube and looks more like a reddish coral on. I don’t see any pink in this at all, not that I wanted any but the picture someone posted doesn’t look at all like what I got. It doesn’t look like the coral either, which I’ve only seen in pics. I ordered this and sinner berry and didn’t like either. I prefer opaque but these go on gloppy and uneven. You have to use a finger or lip brush and are dull looking. I don’t want shine, but don’t want the look of chalk either. I do like matte lips but these didn’t work for me.

I really wanted to love this lipstick, as I bought in when Poppy King was doing an in-store appearance and she gave it her approval. I felt amazing walking out of the store with that colour on. Away from the compliments of the sales staff and the neon lights of Myer, I realized it was a way too strong a colour for my pale skin. The texture was quite nice though and blendable.

If possible, I would give this product a 4.5.
I got Rouge Sinner hoping for it to be “THE” red lipstick for me. It is pretty close. I have fallen in love with LQ’s matte formula. Amazing pigmentation and staying power, yet not drying. Also, they have no scent, which is nice for those who are sensitive to smells. If they were not so pricey, I would definitely pick up one or two more.
Unfortunately, Rouge, like all red lipsticks, still pulls a little pink on me. This is my biggest gripe about red lips. When I am feeling brave enough to actually wear this, it works best on top of a brick lipliner. I also like to deepen it even more with Lipstick Queen’s Black Shine lipgloss, although obviously that replaces the nice matte finish with an equally pretty but different glossy finish. These two steps seem to keep the redness of the colour intact.
This product loses points for pulling pink and for the price (although the formula is nice enough that I can justify one splurge purchase).
For reference, I am NC25, neutral leaning toward warm.

UGH! Does the perfect red lipstick exist?
I spent a ridiculously long day recently shopping for the “perfect” red lipstick. I had tried all department store brands (Nars, Mac, Chanel, Dior, Shisedo, Chantecaille, Guerlain, etc…). My lips were sore! I ended up purchasing Classic Red by Prescriptive, I guess, out of frustration. Plus it was one of the least expensive at $18. Not to anyone’s surprise, I wasn’t completely satisfied so I kept reading lipstick reviews when I came across a mention of Lipstick Queen.
The more I read, the more intrigued and obsessed I became. Luckily, there is a store near my place of work that sells them. So, I took my lunch today and went straight to the mall. After trying a few different colors and formulas… I decided Rouge Sinner was the perfect red for me (mediterranean, olive toned skin with yellow undertones). Great texture, too. I have very dry lips and hate the way matte lipsticks make them look awful and anemic. Not with this. They remained soft and supple. Actually, when I got back to work, my co worker asked if I had put lip plumper on. She said my lips looks amazing and fuller. woo hoo!
Sitting at my desk, I proceeded to eat a pop tart and drink vitamin water. When I got home, I ate some pretzels… and guess what??? 5 hours later, the color was still there. It had faded, of course, but was still a saturated red. Plus it faded evenly. I wasn’t left with the red ring around my lips. And, my lips never got dry.
Now I am researching which color I should purchase next 🙂

Perfect matte red – like Ruby Woo but easier to apply. I used to wear Lust in Poppy King’s original 1992 Seven Deadly Sins range and this is being marketed as an updated version of that, but I still have an old tube of Lust (now too dry to use so I don’t know why I still have it) and this is a little more pink – at least on my lips.
***Edit – removed a star because, while it’s still a lovely, long lasting colour it’s already gone quite hard in the tube after only a few months and is a bit difficult to apply now. Strangely, I have three other mattes in this range and they’re all fine. It’s just this particular one.
