I purchased this lipstick in the shades Velvet (a medium mauve-nude) and Vamped (a deep blue-toned maroon red). I love them both!
First off, while the shade range of this line is quite limited, the shades that are available are gorgeous. I chose Velvet and Vamped because I wanted to see how this lipstick performed at both ends of the spectrum.
First off, Velvet is a great dupe for KVD Lovecraft. I’m not buying KVD anymore, and finding a good dupe in a similar formula was a real treat, since Lovecraft used to be my go-to everyday lip color. I love a mauve-nude shade year-round, since I find this type of shade goes with a variety of looks and outfits. Velvet is perfect – not too dark and not too light. It’s great on my light olive skin. This shade goes on evenly and doesn’t require a lot of work to make it look polished, and it LASTS! I wore this on a trip to Cleveland, and it lasted me through the entire morning, the plane ride, and through the gross meal at Currito at the airport, and still looked just as good as when I’d applied it six hours before. For a non-liquid formula, that’s pretty great!
Vamped takes a tiny bit of work, as it’s such a bold shade. It’s not patchy, but does require that you blot and apply another layer in order for it to show up completely opaque. It’s absolutely gorgeous though, and once it’s on, it stays on. This one can smudge if you’re not careful, but it’s otherwise a great formula.
Both of these shades feel comfortable and weightless on the lips. I don’t experience too much dryness, even for a matte, but make no mistake – they are not going to add any moisture. If your lips are already dry, these will accentuate the patches. If you exercise good lip care ahead of time, you won’t have any issues. I find that the formula of these lipsticks sort of fills in the deeper lines on my lips and makes them look plush and soft, and I love it for that. Especially Velvet.
The packaging is a bit tacky for my taste. I don’t like animal print. And truth be told, it feels quite flimsy. But honestly, as long as it doesn’t break, I’m not worried. And I don’t really care what it looks like as long as the product inside is good.
For $9 USD at Ulta, I’m pretty impressed! Yes, there are less expensive brands at a drugstore price point, but I appreciate that these are a high-performance, vegan/cruelty-free lipstick for under a tenner! If the shade range expands, I’ll definitely pick more of these up!
Edit: I ended up picking up Thirst, which is a medium-dark muted purple shade. Sort of plummy, but much more of a dusty purple. I looooove it! It’s not too purple to make it look clownish at all; in fact, the color feels a bit more grungy to me, which fits my overall aesthetic. It performs every bit as beautifully as the other shades I’ve tried. For the record, I also swatched Stiletto, which is a bright true red, and I may have to go back for that one and pick it up, since it’s quite possibly the most velvety red lippie I’ve ever seen!
