Undaunted by previous failures and near misses, I continue my quest to find the perfect everyday pink-brown Bobbi Brown lipstick with my latest purchase, Desert Rose.
I’d tried this on in-store and it looked so good I wondered if I should break my New Year resolution of not buying any more lipsticks until I’d used up my current hoard. I tried it a second time with my sister in tow, who looks great in bold shades and hates what she calls my “muddy” (and I call tasteful neutral) choices; she thought it looked good too and worth buying, so I blame her for giving in.
What I really like about this shade is that it has the right balance of pink and brown for me. With my Bobbi Brown 4.5 Warm Natural skin and quite pigmented lips, I found BB’s Brownie too light and lilac-tinged for daywear, and Brown to be too peachy-nude. Both look good in the evening or under artificial light. Desert Rose is what I hoped those lipsticks would be; something that would work with my complexion and look natural on my lips, in any season or lighting. For further comparison, Desert Rose is a slightly more beigey version of Italian Rose, a warm and pretty pink-brown which I have in the now discontinued Creamy Lip Color, but is similar in depth.
This is my first Nourishing Lip Color. It goes on medium-sheer and medium-shine, easy to apply with no precision needed. The texture is not as soft as the Creamy Lip Color was but overall lends itself well to a natural look, as it allows your own lip colour to show through. Desert Rose amplifies the pink-red tones in my lips just enough while the warm brown notes make the shade fit comfortably with my skin tone.
Perhaps I should give up trying to find the one perfect lipstick, because there’s always another one round the corner, isn’t there? For now, I’d say that Desert Rose is likely to become my default low-maintenance go-anywhere my-lips-but-better lipstick, taking over from Clinique’s Chubby Stick in Fuller Fig which I really love but those sticks break so easily that I have just about given up. I think this is a 4+ rating.
Two of my favourite BB lipstick shades (Slopes and Carolina) have now been discontinued. I hope they keep Desert Rose around for a while, because this is one of those timeless shades that will look good with a variety of skin tones.
