Love the texture. Matte but doesn’t dry out my lips like MAC does. Also it looks natural, unlike the MAC matte lipstick which looks drying as well. Good colour payoff, doesn’t transfer easily as long as I don’t eat heavily oily food. And the colour looks natural on me.

Rosewood No. 421 can be described as a medium dusty rose brown with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. This pretty pinky nude shade is great for everyday use. The color payoff is top-notch and this has a slight luminosity that gives a semi-opaque coverage. This wore well for up to six hours. The color transfers, but not too much. I also need to reapply after eating a full meal but what I like about it is that the color fades evenly and gradually.

Burberry’s Lip Velvet formula is one of the few matte lipstick formulas on the market that I can wear comfortably (my lips are prone to dryness). These aren’t true mattes btw. They actually have a demi-matte finish – not shiny but somewhere in between a matte and a satin. This makes them much more forgiving on your lips than a full on matte lipstick. I find that these type of formulas (think MAC’s Matte formula) generally draw attention to fine lines and any flaky areas. They also aren’t very comfortable. .
SHADES
I have the Lip Velvet in three colours – Honeysuckle, Military Red and Rosewood. Rosewood is my most reached for. It’s a muted rose-mauve, medium in terms of depth. Despite its name, Rosewood doesn’t have much brown in it; it has a cooler taupe-y base. I have dark hair and eyes, fair skin that’s a bit paler than n15, and my undertones are on the cooler side of the spectrum. My lips are rosy and pigmented and Rosewood is very, very similar – it’s slightly deeper and more muted than my natural lips.
Rosewood isn’t a dramatic, showstopper lipstick but it is extremely versatile. On me, this pulls much more mauve – I don’t see any brown in it at all. It’s a muted, cool-toned dusky petal pink. I suspect it’s one of those shades that can pull either way, depending on your undertones. Other than that, I think that Rosewood is best suited to fair to medium skin. It’s not a very deep colour so it may look a bit washed out if you’re NC/NW40 and above.
If you’re cool-toned and are after a true rosewood lipstick with a touch of brown in it, Tom Ford Indian Rose is awesome (it’s also available in the Lips & Boys range under the name ‘Collin’).
COMPARISON TO OTHER MATTE FORMULAS:
My favourite matte lipstick formulas are still 1) Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution range (unlike the Burberry Lip Velvet, the Matte Revolutions have a definite sheen and are more satin like in terms of finish) and 2) Tom Ford’s Matte Lip Colors (like the Burberry Lip Velvet, the Ford mattes don’t have any sheen. The Tom Ford formula is absolute perfection, decadently creamy, enhances your lips rather than highlights flaws and the texture/feel is almost cushiony).
However, Burberry’s Lip Velvets still score very well too. The shade range is more conservative than Charlotte Tilbury’s range, so if you prefer natural/more muted lipsticks, you have more choices with Burberry. Tom Ford’s mattes are amazing but priced at a cool $53, they’re a bit of a splurge. Burberry’s are more affordable, and also great quality, if not Tom Ford level great. The Burberry Lip Velvets also have a luxe feel too with their pleasantly weighty gunmetal packaging embossed with the Burberry signature print. (I find square packaging more luxurious than rounded packaging for some reason. I wish that the Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks came in rectangular rather than rounded tubes). If I’m being nit picky, I would say that the Lip Velvets can be slightly drying on my lips over time. On the plus side, they wear pretty well, about 4-5 hours.
PACKAGING
Packaging is sturdy and the magnetic cap means you don’t have to worry about the cap falling off in your purse. I should note that, if you have several Burberry lipsticks, the magnetism extends to the tubes themselves so they gravitate towards each other. It’s a tiny bit annoying but I can see how some people may find it handy.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
I hate the ‘would you rebuy this product’ question – it makes it sound like the product is bad if you say no. I wouldn’t rebuy this simply because I have so many lipsticks already, many in similar shades. So no, it wouldn’t be a priority for me. I like Rosewood but I don’t absolutely love it. Of course, YMMV as is always the case.
GRADE: B +. This is a very nice lipstick, not terribly unique but very well done overall.

Rosewood is a beautiful color. For reference I have a light complexion, C3 in MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus, Warm Ivory in Fiona Stiles Foundations and usually Sand in Bobbi Brown. On me this is a medium rose/brown, a lovely autumn shade.
The texture is not drying, but it’s definitely not moisturizing either. I generally prefer a cream formula, although I have some MAC mattes and Charlotte Tilbury mattes also. Burberry’s Lip Velvet is not as dry as the popular liquid lipsticks made by Anastasia Beverly Hills or Kat Von D. Wear time is average. I have to reapply this throughout the day to maintain the color, but to be fair, I am a coffee drinker.
I’m not fond of the fragrance in Burberry Lip Velvet lipsticks. They have a floral scent. My personal philosophy is that if my lipsticks smell like anything, they should smell edible, and I don’t eat roses. I prefer the scent of Bite Beauty Matte Lip Crayons which smell like desserts, or Bite’s Amuse Bouche formula which reminds me of lemonade. My favorite is the vanillin MAC and Charlotte Tilbury use to give their lipsticks a delicious vanilla aroma, and I also enjoy the creme brulee scent of Kat Von D’s Studded Kiss cream lipsticks. If not a gourmand fragrance, I’d rather have unscented lipsticks such as Chantecaille’s fragrance free moisturizing Lip Sticks. The floral scent of Burberry Lip Velvet annoys me, and it has a slight metallic taste that I don’t care for either.
Burberry has a few luxury touches such as the plaid embossing in the lipstick bullet, perhaps as a way to justify the $34 price tag. The square containers are substantial, not flimsy. However, they are bulkier than MAC’s sleek tubes, so if you’re toting them around, the Burberry lipsticks take up more room and don’t always fit into narrow slip pockets in my purse that hold Chantecaille and Bite Beauty tubes with ease.
Overall, Lip Velvets are nice. They don’t feather or bleed. But they don’t make my lips feel good, and some of my other lipsticks do. When I wear Tilbury’s Matte Revolutions, there is a creaminess to them missing in many other matte formulas. Bite Beauty’s Matte Lip Crayons are comfortable, too.
Burberry’s Rosewood is a flattering shade, but I won’t buy this particular product again. The floral fragrance bothers me, I’m just not in love with the formula, and for the price, I need to be swept off my feet. I have several lipsticks from Charlotte Tilbury, Chantecaille, and Bite Beauty that I prefer. I might be willing to try Rosewood in one of Burberry’s other lipstick formulas, as long as it doesn’t smell floral and doesn’t taste of tin. In lieu of that, I’d happily buy Tilbury’s Bond Girl or Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche in Chai. These are similar rose/brown shades, though not exact duplicates of Rosewood.

This is a very pretty shade with luxurious packaging. I just love the plaid imprint on the lipstick itself. This is a pink-brown nude that should look good on most skin tones. It has a soft matte finish that feels light, never uncomfortable. I will probably not repurchase but only because of cost.

This is a lovely matte lipstick, one of the best I have ever tried. The finish is matte, but it’s not heavy or drying. The formula seems very light and the color can be layered very easily (though one coat give full coverage). I love the color- MLBB that’s just a tad darker than what I’d ordinarily wear. I put one coat on, rub my lips together and feel like I’m completely ready. It’s not inexpensive but the packaging is pretty (dark grey matte) with the clicking closure and just feels more luxurious.
