I just wanted to try some kind of lip product from Colourpop because I like their eyeshadows so much. This set was developed together with Kathleen Lights, which has fair skin and is a lover of orange makeup, if you have seen any of her videos. I like orange on my lips, so I thought I would like this… but no. I haven’t tried any of Colourpop’s other lip products yet, so I cannot compare this with anything else from them. EDIT: the Ultra Satin in the Trifecta trio is not as sticky as the two satins in this set. Just to mention: I love the Dream St.Palette from the same collection, but the lip trio was definitely not for me.
There are 3 colors in this set:
– Moon child, which is an Ultra Glossy lip (lipgloss)
– Dreamy, which is an Ultra Satin and
– Rever, which is an Ultra Satin
The first reason that I was disappointed was that the colors are not like the colors on Colourpop’s site (Colourpop have actually updated the photos of the glosses several times – the second update seems to have been because the first one showed how unflattering some of the colors were…). The second reason is that I don’t enjoy the textures of the products. A positive: no fragrance in any of these.
Moon Child looked like it would be a pinky nude lip gloss – at least it did so on Kathleen. Later, more photos were put up, on other models, and the color looked much more like it actually does: concealer-beige. When Kathleen was talking about this she was like “This is so great over a lip liner, I’m wearing i over a lip liner right now”. What I hear is: “This doesn’t look that great by itself”. She never showed it off over bare lips. She actually mentioned the MU artist applied it over lip liner too when she was taking the pictures for Colourpop – isn’t that weird whn you’re supposed to show off the color? I’m about NC25 right now, olive-toned skin, and the color is about the same color as my skin, with some small, golden shimmer. No way I’m able to use it by itself. It’s fairly pigmented, which means it’s a little streaky, which I don’t enjoy. Otherwise: totally regular fine formula.
Dreamy and Rever are both Ultra Satin liquid lipstick. It’s a formula that is supposed to be more comfortable to wear, but I’m a little bothered by that they don’t dry down completely… Dreamy is the only color I actually somewhat like. It looks different on the lips than in the tube: in the tube it looks like a dusty peach, but on the lips it’s an orange nude. I don’t ever wear it by itself though because it’s white-based, which never looks good on me, so I mix it with the above-mentioned lip gloss. Rever is a darkened NEON orange. It looked like a bright red on the photo with Kathleen, and more of an orangy-red in the other photos, but don’t let that fool you – it’s a dark neon orange. I like orange, but this one just looks weird on me. With my olive-toned skin, it makes me look sick. Every time I have shown it off to anyone, they laugh… not the reaction I would like. Could Rever be used by other people? Yes. I would recommend to pair it with an orange eye, and I see this more fit for a night look than for day, but that’s a personal preference.
I don’t like the texture of neither Dreamy or Rever. They are VERY pigmented (probably enough pigment in there for 4 lipsticks) and catch onto any flakes. Re-application isn’t good either, as the lipstick begins to bunch up. I can FEEL them on my lips, even if I apply only a thin layer. It’s not for dry lips, as it’s a little bit drying. As I mentioned before: these Ultra Satins don’t seem to dry down completely – they remain slightly sticky on the lips even though they look matte. The lipsticks stayed for an OK amount of time, but I absolutely hate sticky liquid lipstick that I’m constantly aware of. This set will go back to Ulta, unfortunately.
