First off, I love tinted lip balms, and these are a grail for me. They have kind of that nice chapstick feel, but with no scent or flavor, and they are sheer — I’d say less pigmented than MAC’s lip lustre and Lipstick Queen’s Saint offerings, for comparison’s sake.
These apply like a lovely balm and feel a bit cushiony and soft. The five shades I have are Hungry (a sheer reddish pink); Chew (sheer raspberry pink); Gorge (sheer warm brown); Slick (rich mahogany — also sheer); and Peck (full-bodied Merlot — also sheer).
Slick and Peck look really dark in the tube, but they’re the sheerest. They look deep brown and deep wine purple in the tube, respectively, but they really impart just a bit of color. They’re buildable, though, but even if you put layer after layer on, it’ll never look like what’s in the tube. The other three colors are more pigmented — just a bit — but I’d say all over them approach nude/MLBB territory (even the darks). The lighter shades probably show up more on lips, if you have pale lips, and the darks would show up more if your lips are more naturally pigmented.
Staying power is decent. They’ll leave lips feeling soft and coated for a bit, but with eating or drinking, they’ll obviously wear off fast. They, however, are the sheer and forgiving colors that allow for mirror-free touchups.
One thing I really like with these lippies — aside from the feel, the sheerness, and the lack of scent and flavor — is that they have a bit of natural warmth to them. At least the colors I chose do. Maybe Pucker (described as a grape jam) is cooler, or some of the other four are (though I suspect not), but the hints of warmth give a nice wearable aspect. They’re not warm in the sense that a yellow-leaning orange is warm, but more warm in the sense that there’s enough yellow in a pink to make it lean peach instead of bubblegum pink, if that makes sense. They also seem to have included options (Slick, Peck, Pucker, etc.) that would work well on darker complexions, so it’s not just pale white-girl nudes included here.
The price, at $18, is perhaps a touch high for a tinted lipstick. I happened to take advantage of a lipstick day sale, and then used another coupon to try the others, so I didn’t pay full price.
The packaging is nice, with a solid metal (or metal-feeling) case that clicks shut firmly. One potential problem is the balm feels a tiny bit soft, so if it’s a hot day I’d fear it could break off at the base, and it might not be ideal for carrying in a pocket.
But over all I love the hell out of these.
