Maybelline has been marketing these lipsticks as ‘universal’- they are meant to suit all skin tones. Of course, diversity is a hot topic in makeup lately.
The claim sounds a little nuts but images advertising the lipsticks show fifty women of different skin tones wearing each shade and they…. genuinely all look good. I have medium-dark skin and the trial-and-error of buying lipstick and realising it looks horrendous on me (usually ashiness or looking washed out) is a real pain. I especially have this problem with “nude”/”my lips but better”/neutral lips because colours that should look natural do not look natural on me.
I bought the colour “Mauve For Me” and am honestly shocked how much I love it. I have always loved mauve lips but struggled to find one that isn’t too grey or too pink, but this is perfect!! It’s genuinely the perfect neutral lip on me and doesn’t look out of place on my face. It is a satin finish, which is my favourite lip finish. Not drying, flat, and matte, but not too sticky, in-your-face and glossy. I was actually surprised to find it doesn’t seem to bleed- I applied and replied without a lip liner and it still looked neat (granted this may not be true for the bolder colours, but I believe the red is actually a matte finish which may stay put better). My only complaint is that it’s not the most durable and will come off in the middle of my mouth when I eat. But honestly, everything else about it is so perfect and it’s so easy to reapply that I really don’t mind.
One of my new favourite lipsticks, and my single favourite neutral lipstick. : )
