I search for two basic criteria in my makeup products: longevity, and purity. I usually end up with highly pigmented colours that I can sheer out, products that I need to baby, and ones that I am constantly looking to one up. This lip crayon, thankfully, falls into that first category. It took a while to get there, but it did.
I was under the impression that this was a traditional lip stain upon purchase. The swatch on my hand looked to be the best colour of the bunch so I picked it. Bright rosy-pink, and stood out against all the others. Happy as a clam I got home eager to try it on my lips… And ohhh-ok-now-I-know-how-briiiiight…? I am not one to return makeup, so became determined to make this evening fushia work as a daytime look.
Applying this directly to your lips has the effect of a regular lipstick. It will bleed, it will smudge, and it will still wipe off without a trace. The trick with this is to apply in the thinnest layers possible, allow to dry, and go from there. That is the only way you will get this proclaimed “stain” to actually stain. Personally, I apply one layer to my inner pout, then double up with a tinted lip balm. The lipsurgence makes its gradual way to the rest of my lips throughout the next ten minutes, for a natural looking flush.
So here’s the breakdown… For the price, this lipsurgence will last you a very long time. The minty scent? I only notice it when I apply. How long does it stay on? Only until you eat something, so really, it doesn’t truly stain. Just be glad that you aren’t eating parabens. Price? Heck, it’s not worth the 30 plus dollars looking back on it. The packaging is fairly simple, and the twist up is very convenient. But if that is what you are going for then experiment with something at a fraction of the price like Mineral Fusion. I will definitely not be repurchasing.

I got this little gem for Christmas, and I’ve gotta say, I’m quite impressed. I personally love the menthol smell/taste. It’s very refreshing. Although I prefer darker lip colors (black, purple, maroon, etc.), this color compliments my NC-20 skin and looks very flattering on me. The lasting power is amazing, and it really does stay matte. I would repurchase, probably in a less pink shade, but I really do like this Lippie.

This color is awesome, if I smudge it on with my fingers, it leaves a beautiful, just bitten stain.

first of all, i discovered this product from Bunny (Graveyardgirl). i love that woman! anyway, this is by far the most comfortable matte red i have ever used.. the color is just right on my skin tone. not too cool but not too warm as well. the smell is also amazing! the mint scent is stronger than that of revlon’s kissable balm stain but it does not bother me.
when i wear this it looks and feels so smooth and velvety and it does not smear outside my mouth– of course if you kiss a tissue paper it would come off– duh! that;s what i love about this. it does not smudge even without a lip liner but it’s not a pain to remove either.
you should put a lipbalm first though before applying just in case you have chapped lips like me. BUT since im using a greasy balm (carmex) i blot my lips with tissue then put this on and it’ll be perfect.
the size is just like MAC lipsticks– 3 grams. so i dont see the issue in size. maybe it’s just the huge packaging that’s getting people’s hopes up. i love the packaging too cos it’s matte. other lipsticks like revlon or maybelline have 4 grams of product but you cant beat the quality of this one. i have a back up too.
*a little off topic:
Tarte’s new spring collection of lipsurgence (not matte) is $24.00 for 1 gram of product! that’s just bullshiz to me! they said that they downsized because they want customers to finish the product before it expires but not decreasing the price is just ridiculous! I HOPE and PRAY that they will not downsize the matte lipsurgence!

The best thing about this lip product is the color. The second best thing is that it’s truly matte. On my coloring (pale with dark brown hair and eyes) it’s about as perfect a pink as I can find. The worst thing about this lip product is how much it transfers and smudges. The second worst thing about it is that for the price, it’s a pitifully small amount of product. I was mildly horrified that I’d spent so much money on something that was smaller than your average lipstick bullet.

Lively is a matte, bright fuschia red-pink color that would look good on all skin tones. I am really impressed with these lipsticks, because they are a creamy matte formula that is non drying. You can rub your lips together hours after applying it, and it’s still creamy. It’s not fully opaque, but it can be built up to it after two or three strokes. I don’t love the packaging, because after the tip is used, its a large surface left thats hard to spread over the lips. (I have large lips so its ok, but I cant imagine this being easy for small lips). I’m not sure I’ll buy more of these at $24, because there is a dupe by Revlon for far less money, and they have more colors. But, overall I’m really pleased with this product.

Lively is a bright, bold fuschia, one that pulls more red/pink than violet, that is gorgeously flattering on a wide variety of skins tones. It’s thick yet smooth in texture, applies very opaque, and while the finish is very matte, it doesn’t feel dry or stiff the way many matte lipsticks can. It feels creamy and velvety on. I wouldn’t really call it hydrating, despite Tarte’s claims, but I don’t find it drying at all. It’s pretty long wearing as long as I don’t eat. Maybe 5-6 hours. It also has a soft mint scent that I love. And I appreciate the chubby pencil packaging as it makes it easy to apply such a bright color with precision.
I LOVE this lippie, but a stain or tint it is not. I don’t know why Tarte markets their matte lipsurgences as tints and stains because in terms of their texture, opacity and performance, these crayons are definitely lipsticks. If there’s any stain that lingers after the product wears off it’s no different than what you’d get using any matte, pigmented lipstick. After a few hours it still looks like faded lipstick, not like an actual stain. And calling it a tint? There’s zero translucency here .
Great product overall despite Tarte’s misleading claims. This is my first matte finish Lipsurgence and I definitely see myself buying more!

I only bought this because of the fierce color honestly! The price you pay for this matte lip stain is A LOT compared to the many drug store dupes you can buy. Butttttt I do love it1
LOVE: The color- SO HOT
Every time I wear it, confidence points go up because everyone compliments it
LOVE how matte it is.
It has a kinda minty feeling!
DONT LOVE: The price for it.

NOT worth the money. I am a lipstain fanatic and only use chapstick or lipstain because I think gloss is too sticky and lipstick is too drying and messy. I love this color, and the color payoff is amazing but it smudges so easily! It almost has an oily feel, not in a hydrating way, where the product slides all over your lips and around your mouth. And after a couple hours, it becomes drying. Although this is to be expected with most stains I was just disappointed by the price and hoped this one would be different. It also does not go on evenly and takes time to apply to look decent. I think the Revlon Just Bitten stains are better and the Smitten color is very similar. I returned and bought the cheaper and was more satisfied!
Pros:
Color Payoff
Cons:
Smudgey
Oily at first
Drying after time
Price
Overall:
NOT WORTH IT!
