I bought into the hype and picked up three of these in the Original flavor, Smashed and Maple. They aren’t awful but I don’t really get all the hype. The texture is very thick, almost as thick as a lancome juicy tube. And I find if my lips are extremely chapped (as they are when I am using Tretinoin in my chin area) this balm requires light exfoliation of the lips before application. Otherwise, it’s just a thick coat over cracked dead skin. You can still feel like dead skin hanging on under a layer of this. I am thinking this is more of an occlusive type product to retain moisture – like Weleda Skin Food or Alba’s Unpetrolum jelly VS the type of product that actively moisturizes and heals damaged skin. The texture straight from the tube is as if you are trying to spread unwarmed, thick, organic honey over your mouth. I get the most comfortable wear from applying a light coat of CeraVe ointment first which kind of defeats the purpose of this lip care splurge because I suspect the CeraVe is doing the heavy lifting here.
I like the color of Maple best but the smell/flavor is overwhelming and lingers. This is great for you, if you are a pancake/breakfast lover! I am trying to use it to not waste it but the smell honestly kind of turns my stomach every time I open the tube. The seal was not easy to remove and I eventually cut it off with cuticle scissors, but now the plastic is jagged and uncomfortable when I apply. The packaging is cute/minimal but I wish they actually had a lip/applicator instead of blunt tube opening (like a Jack Black balm or even Blistex springs for that luxury.)
Bottom line, these are expensive and sticky. I would pick Lanolips over these any day of the week and they are a sliver of the price and much more comfortable to wear. Nothing about this product, be it formula or packaging merits the price or being sold in a “high end” cosmetics store.

I love the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask – I have the original and the color Smashed. I recently picked up Maple and I love it just as much as the other two! It gives a beautiful shimmery nude glow to the lips. The longevity of this product is pretty good, considering it’s a tinted lip treatment. It wears like a long-wear gloss on me. I can get a few hours of wear before I need to reapply. It feels very moisturizing and the moisture lasts just as long as the color. I never feel like I need to reapply due to dryness like I do with some other balms. That being said, this is very thick and you can definitely feel it on your lips. It can be a bit difficult to squeeze out of the tube. It also has a bit of a sweet taste which may be a turnoff to some. At $26 it’s pretty pricey but I’ve had my tube of original for a year and a half now and there is still a decent amount of product left. It will last you a long time!

When this was first introduced, the Maple shade was exclusive to Canada, much to my chagrin. As soon as I heard that it was being sold at Sephora in the U.S. as well, I had to have it. I had been using the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask in Champagne, a sheer pearlescent pink which I still like, but Maple has surpassed it as my favorite. The Agave Lip Mask is also available in the color Smashing, a rosy red tint, or Clear.
I like to use MAC Lip Scrubtious in Vanilla to exfoliate, and then I put on a dab of this maple lip mask. The name “mask” throws some customers off – it’s not a rinse-off mask. It’s simply a very emollient lanolin-based ointment that you leave on the lips until it wears off. I like to wear Bite’s agave masks under my matte lipsticks.
Pros:
1) Highly moisturizing.
2) The color is a sheer, barely-there nude tint. Sephora describes the Maple shade as “bronze,” but on the lips it looks very natural, not a bold, metallic color.
3) It contains real maple syrup, so it smells and tastes delicious.
4) It comes in a generous 15g tube. Since very little is needed per application, this seems to last forever. My Champagne tube is more than a year old and it’s still plump with product.
5) Infused with the antioxidant resveratrol.
6) Gluten free, and does not contain any petrochemicals.
7) Bite Beauty does not test on animals.
8) Contains shea butter and jojoba oil.
9) The lanolin is medical grade.
Cons:
1) As with all of Bite’s masks, you have to squeeze the tube hard to get any product out.
2) If you have an allergy to lanolin, be aware that the first ingredient in this is pharma grade lanolin.
3) $26 might seem expensive when you can buy Aquaphor at the drugstore for five bucks.
This should last quite a while but when I eventually run out, I’ll certainly buy another tube.
