Buy again? Definitely. Would like to find a better compact to transfer it into, though.
I can’t believe that such a popular product didn’t have a profile on MakeupAlley until now! It’s been out for a few years now, a big favourite in my circle of friends, and recently expanded to include three more shades – 020 Gold Dust, 030 Amber Crystal and 040 Pearl Glaze. I enjoy it a lot, even though I find the fashion for exorbitant use of highlighter ugly, and I think it deserves a wider recognition.
First off, I found it a bit difficult to give a score on packaging. I thought about giving it a 2 but settled on a 3, because the flaws I see in it are mostly hypothetical, and a 3 is “not great, not terrible”. I do understand that a big part of the reason for the low cost of this product is the cheap plastic packaging. And while my compact has held up well enough so far (no cracks, hinges are still going strong, still snaps shut loudly and securely), my experience with this kind of plastic – and specifically compacts from Catrice and Essence – has been that it gives way, and thusly makes the whole thing unusable, long before the excellent product in it even has a dent in it. As far as I can tell, the highlighter has been baked onto a sort of clay (?) disc, so it should theoretically be possible to depot it into a sturdier container without damaging the powder itself, but I haven’t yet found a compact with appropriate measurements that would accommodate the dome.
So much for that; now on to the product itself. I always find it easiest to compare products when reviewing them, but when it comes to highlighter, I’ve had such bland experiences in the past that I really cannot recall any characteristics to contrast them against this specific product – all I know for sure that it’s absolutely great. I do have one other “highlighter”, the Essence Strobing Highlighter (which I also did a review on), but that one is so different that a comparison wouldn’t be of much use.
Texture-wise, it’s not chalky at all, but it does have a bit of fallout when dipped into with brushes (I use the Ebelin Professional Fächerpinsel); fingers don’t have any such effect. I personally don’t find it to be too big a deal, but I also use it rather sparingly, with a very soft fan brush, and make sure to tap off excess so as not to get the intense powder anywhere except where I want it to. And as for product waste, it’s very big (8g), so even if you lost a fair bit of product through fallout, it still would be a long time before you’d have to spend the ridiculous sum of 5€ to repurchase it.
The colour I have is 010 Light Infusion, the originator of the line, and I find it to be perfect for my rather fair skin; for comparison, I use 51 Light Vanilla in both Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation and Serum Gel, Oriflame The ONE Everlasting Foundation in 31160 Porcelain, Catrice All Matt Plus and HD Liquid Coverage Foundation in 010 Light Beige, MAC Face & Body Foundation in C1, etc. It has enough rosy and creamy colour pigments in it to make it look natural and not as stark as straight-up white highlighter.
The intensity is very high, and buildable to be increased still. The fan brush I prefer this with is very soft, though, so I don’t get that mirror effect that is required for Instagram-style makeup. I could find a highlighter that isn’t as intense, but I’m very satisfied with this one and frankly don’t feel the need to look for something “better”. I remember that many of my previous highlighters had very obvious chunks of glitter in them, and in this one they are so finely milled that they show up as one continuous layer of glow instead of freckles.
All in all, I highly recommend, especially when an intense highlight is preferred, but also for people who like it to be more natural. I think that it lends itself even to the latter because it has very finely milled pigments, and with the right application technique, the intensity can be dialled down according to one’s liking.
