So today I wandered over to my favorite little fancy pants hair supply store in search of a product that might help my hair hold its curl better when using a curling iron, as it tends to lose shape rather rapidly.
I described what I wanted and asked the salesperson for any suggestions as I really had no idea where to begin. She heartily recommended this stuff — “No one has ever returned it. You can if you’re not happy, but you’d be the first”. For the sake of comparison, I asked if there were any other similar products available. She pointed out another spray from a different brand and mentioned it was “sticker” than this one.
Her body language was screaming “No bueno!” about the other spray, so I ended up going with her initial recommendation. I can’t imagine how sticky the other one must be because this is the stickiest hair product I’ve ever used! After spraying it on my hair and using a curling iron to style it, I ended up with a head full of toilet paper roll hair. Which is to say, each chunk of hair ended up into a perfectly shaped tube that could only be described as feeling like delicate cardboard toilet paper tubes.
Fortunately, this stuff actually combs out very well while holding a great deal of shape. For all of the initial stickiness/stiffness/scariness, my hair actually ended up quite soft, curly and shiny.
Still, this is a very weird product, albeit one that is incredibly effective. I’ve never used anything else remotely comparable but would use/buy again. It also smells delightful in a fruity way. Kind of like apples? Perfume-y fruity apples?
Recommended, but with a few reservations:
1. If you’re the type to freak out when beauty products are confusing and weird (though ultimately effective), this may be a bit much. You kind of need to have a sense of adventure. It’s like bringing an AK-47 to the party when all you really needed was a BB gun or maybe a rifle.
2. You will probably need to comb your hair afterwards — that is, unless you’re shooting for a really crazy style that needs a TON of hold to get you there.
3. If you have somewhat fragile hair as I do, be prepared to sacrifice a few strands when you comb it out. As such, probably not remotely appropriate for every day use. Healthy hair people? I dunno. You’ll prolly be okay. I think.
4. It promises “heat protection”. Deeply, deeply skeptical on that front, but not why I bought it so…I dunno?

I recently bought a product recommended to me a by a woman working at a hair salon. I was seeking a spray that would prevent heat damage during styling and she swore by this.
Hair type: Long, fine (but plentiful), healthy.
I applied this product to two 1.5in sections of hair, as indicated, combed it through thoroughly and curled it with a barrel iron. Upon application, the product dries quickly and becomes somewhat sticky. It smells really good but isn’t overpowering. There was no sizzle upon contact with the iron, no steam.
Upon removal of the barrel my hair dried into a crispy/crunchy strand. This is normal as this product is meant to give you hold as well as heat protection. Same effect with the second section.
I combed through the curls and was left with the final effect. Hold was okay, slightly more effective than not using anything on my hair. However, my hair was more visibly dull (I have very shiny hair) and felt dry compared to the strands that weren’t curled. I put some mythic oil in my hair but it still didn’t go back to it’s regular softness.
Pros: A little bit of extra hold and structure (3.0/5), nice smell, possible heat protection?
Cons: Dry hair texture, sticky, high alcohol content (not sure how it’s meant to protect my hair from damage), reduced shine, reduced softness.
Conclusion: Will not be spending 21.22$ on this product again. While it wasn’t bad, I’m not convinced that it helped save my hair from heat damage.

I really love this product! I had my hair straightened for homecoming, and used a redone product, but sadly it was discontinued, so I decided to give this a try. I was pleasantly surprised! My hair is really thick, curly, and hard to straighten, but this did an excellent job. My hair was fully straightened, and unaffected by humidity. My hair was Very shiny, and smelled amazing! I’ve worn it straight for four days now and it hasn’t budged. I was worried at first, because when I sprayed it, it was all sticky and crunchy like hairspray, but after going over it with my Chi flat iron a few more times, and brushing through it, it was soft and silky. I like the sprayer a lot, also. It evenly distributes the product.

I really wanted to love this stuff because I am in love with the Kenra blow dry spray and the Kenra hairspray, however this stuff made my hair so dry and crunchy! I have pretty normal hair an have never had a product dry it out quite like it did! Unfortunately this one was a miss for me!

I love this spray. My stylist recommended this for my hair as this is what she uses in her shop. I used this in conjunction with Kenra’s blow dry spray and this gave me a salon worthy blow out at home. My hair is fine and has a small wave and likes to look dry and frizzy as a result and this is the first time I have been able to get salon looking and feeling results at home. At first when you spray this on it feels sticky and like hairspray and I freaked out a little thinking I had grabbed the wrong bottle, but as soon as you go over the hair with a hot flat iron the crunchy sticky hairspray feeling goes away and leaves behind smooth silky soft hair. I have fine hair that is easily weighed down by most hair products and this used with my flatiron gave me the most beautiful at home blowout I have even done. I don’t even have a Chi or Babyliss tool, I am getting these results with a many years old cheapie Vidal Sasoon hair dryer that only has one setting left that works and a old inexpensive Conair jumbo size flat/curling combo iron. I keep looking at it and running my hands through my hair in awe. My hair feels soft and very silky and looks shiny, silky, and smooth. I am stunned this came from my hands. Maybe there is hope for me to one day master hair too…
06/26/13 EDITED: Days later and my hair is still gorgeously straight and smooth and shiny. Seriously. No other product has EVER done that for me. I live on the Gulf Coast where it is always humid and balmy and my hair has still not frizzed out. I love this Kenra hot spray!!! Now I want to get the shampoo and conditioner and all the rest of the line.

Horrible! First of all the bottle leaks all over if I don’t keep it upright. Second, alcohol is the first ingredient!! How on earth does this “protect” my hair?? It is SO damaging, and I specifically bought it because I wanted something to protect my hair before I used a flat iron. FAIL FAIL FAIL!!!

I don’t get all the haters here. I think this is a superior product. I use it mostly at the roots where I do mini crimping for volume. I find it sprays a very fine mist and I don’t know how people are winding up with gluey, tangled hair. It dries quickly under heat, has great hold and leaves my hair shiny. Now, when I straight iron the rest of my hair, I do find it a bit grippy which can make my hair get those little ridges, so I just use a very light pressure to ensure a smooth glide. My hair is like a board but then a comb glides right through it and it is smooth, shiny and not at all tacky, has good swing and volume. What’s not to love. I will report back if humidity is a problem. But so far this is a true love. My overall favorite hair care lines are Goldwell and Kenra, they seldom disappoint. I used to love Redken, but now all they do is get rid of one fabulous product for another useless, inferior replacement. I think it’s run by chimps afflicted with ADD.

I used Kenra Platinum Hot Spray yesterday for the first time. I really like the shine and hold. However, this morning, I noticed a residue on my CHI flat iron that I have never seen before. It was the color of red velvet cake and was all over my iron. I have been flat ironing for years and have never experienced a build up like this and in this color. I can’t see conintuing to use tihs product if it is going to trash my expensive flat iron. It would not come off with alcohol with the iron cool or hot. I may try nail polish removeer. Has anyone else experienced this?

All this product did was make my hair really sticky. It was awful and made my hair coarse and crunchy. I do NOT recommend this at all.

I really like the smell of this spray as it lasts all day long. The only thing I don’t really like is that it doesn’t really spray that well and the product gets sticky over the spray so it will spray unevenly unless you clean it.
