This review is for the packets of the Ion Brilliance Ammonia Free bleach.
I naturally have light ash brown hair that I dye blue black with a semi-permanent haircolor. I stopped dying it for about a year and eventually most of that had faded out. I wanted to lighten my hair to at least a dark blonde shade so I could dye my hair purple and blue ombre.
I first bleached my hair with Kaleidocolors bleach which was awful. It dried super fast, got blue dust all over the bathroom, turned my hair bright orange.
So, since my hair didn’t get light enough, I figured I’d do some research for a few days while my hair rests, then try another bleach. Surely another bleach would at least get the orange to a yellow, right? Wrong.
While this Ion Brilliance Ammonia Free bleach mixed beautifully, didn’t dry up fast, and didn’t leave dust everywhere (plus it actually smelled good!)..It barely lightened my hair at all :/ But I did have to wash it out after only 20 minutes, maybe that is why? The reason was, was as I had it in my hair, I went to slide the shower cap back to check on the color and my hair was so hot that it literally HURT to touch it. What the heck? Warm or even very warm is normal during a bleach, but so hot that it hurts to touch it?
I honestly don’t know how I still have hair!! I used the Olaplex dupe Ion makes, maybe that’s why I still have hair. Also I had a load of coconut oil in it.
That is just not normal.. The shower cap was starting to melt the product was so hot.
Three levels of lift, huh? Maybe more like 1/2 a level. I probably would have more of a lift using a cheap toner like ColorSilk LOL! Ah well.
I do love their line of hair colors, deep conditioners, and their Olaplex dupe. This is actually the first product by Ion I’ve used that I was sorely disappointed with.

The woman who said it didn’t mix at all with Olaplex, didn’t mix the bleach & developer together BEFORE putting olaplex in it, which clearly states on the box to do before hand.
I’ve been using this bleach for 5 years & it can lift my hair very well. It used to lighten all the way to white, but my hairs gotten darker with age so it lifts to yellow – pale yellow.

This wasn’t the worst powder lightener I’ve tried (Blond Brilliance holds that title). However it was still pretty damn horrible.
The powder would not mix with the developer. I don’t know what ION did wrong with the formula but I’m not the only one that’s had this issue. There is a chance it was adding Olaplex that screwed everything up. But if I can’t use Olaplex with it… I’m sure as hell not going to repurchase. The powder just kept clumping up and would NOT mix evenly. I spent over HALF AN HOUR trying to mix it. I even considered putting it in a blender.
Eventually I got it to a consistency that might work on my hair. It looked like all the powder had dissolved into the developer/olaplex. I actually liked it at this point, because the consistency reminded me of whipped cream. It was easy to work with.
And then here comes the bad part…turns out the powder did NOT mix. As it started to dry while processing (mind you, within minutes) I could see little lumps of powder sitting unevenly on my roots. I tried my best to massage it and break up the clumps.
Upon rinsing out, I realized this only lifted my hair about 3 levels. I’m willing to bet that was due to the uneven mixing.
No, I will not repurchase this powder lightener. The only pros I have to say about it is 1.) ION offers an ammonia-free formula 2.) It did NOT get stuck in my hair. Blond Brilliance fried my hair horribly back in 2014 after it refused to be washed out with a clarifying shampoo. I was pleased the ION came right out with no left over residue despite drying fully while processing. 3.) My roots don’t feel like straw! That’s probably thanks to the olaplex and thanks to the fact it didn’t fully lift. Haha. But that’s better than a nightmare experience.

I use to always just dye my brown hair a light blonde so I would end up with dirty blonde hair but my roots would always get darker and darker. So I went to the salon got my full head of hair one solid blonde color and 150$ later I was done. I highly considered just returning to the salon because I was scared that just bleaching my roots would leave me with a gross orange yellow color at the roots and the rest being a nice blonde color. But being poor I decided against it, and I am so happy I did! This bleach works great! I had bought a toner for after but I ended up not even using if because it’s a gorgeous blonde color that blends perfectly with the rest of my head! I highly recommend this bleach!
P.s it does burn the scalp even with the ion sensitive scalp developer (I use the 20 with a little bit of purple conditioner) but it doesn’t burn half as bad as the salon.

I buy this buy the pound. It works best with the Sensitive Scalp Developer. It is amazing. I have been doing my own hair for 3 years and have tried many lighteners,this one by far is the best. It lightens my Dark black hair into the yellow state where I can toned it to Platinum. Being a bottle Blonde,this is my best option. Its very affordable(About $20 per pound) ,and lifts extremely well. I jist bleached my roots last night and i feel minimum discomfort(i bleached it twice with 40vol). While bleaching you do feel the obvious discomfort ,but nothing that is unbearable. I recommend this lightener to any double-process blonde.

As a listened cosmotologist I use many Ion Volor Brillance products. Their powder lightener is my FAVORITE. As far as negative reviews about this product, it’s user error. I don’t care how many years you have been “DIYing” your own hair color, you are not a professional. Using lightener is very dangerous.. For the obvious reasons like hot spots, uneven lifting, and the worst- BRASSY HAIR. 1- the instructions and warnings on the back recommend performing a strand test prior to all over application. 2- using this on the scalp can result in skin irritation and in some cases severe chemical burns. 3- if you have black/very dark hair and are of any Asian/Hispanic/Italian/Greek heritage- you are not going to be platinum blonde after 1 application. 4- when using 30+ volume itching is very common, it’s not the lightener it the 30 volume developer. 5- all lighteners have the tendency to “thicken” or clump up after first mixing. The 1:1 ratio isn’t very accurate and I suggest mixing the lightener, waiting about 3 minutes and adding a good ounce of developer to the mixture. Keeping the mix a smooth consistency will insure better application, will avoid the product drying or pulling away from the scalp during processing. 6- sometimes bleaching with a lower volume will result in a non desired color or a brassy tone. I 99% of the time use a toner after on scalp or foiling my blondes.
Professionally, I have had great results with Ion Color Brilliance. I use it for foiling and on scalp application. It’s smooth has great lift and the hair is in good condition after using u like some “quick blonde” lighteners out there. I highly recommend seeing professionals in the event you want to lighten or get highlights. With that said, if I were to ever suggest an at home lightener, it would be this one. I do advise to avoid their other lightener; that’s ammonia free in a skinnier, taller tub. It’s not as strong, and I haven’t been happy with the results from using it.

I honestly believe, no offense, but a lot of negative reviews of any bleach product are operator error. And you can be very experienced with color as a DIYer (cannot speak for professionals although I’ve had my share of horrific color/bleaching/correcting done by the hands of some) but honestly bleach can be Pandora’s box. I doubt it ever comes out as intended and the odds of just putting some bleach and developer on your hair and it processing to your exact desire is like highly unlikely. (obv you may get to desired level but still have to tone, etc)
That being said. If you choose to bleach yourself, just make sure you do your research. And when reading reviews, learn from others’ mistakes. And also, anticipate the worst case scenario and make sure you have a Plan B.
ANYWAYS, on to Ion. I bought this bleach though I’m usually buying L’oreal’s Blue Bleach because it’s always on sale. Anyways, I was planning on doing just a soap cap (bleach + 20v + clarifying shampoo) to lighten my hair a couple shades without completely destroying it and Ion’s powder lightener packets (1oz each) were on sale 2 fer 6$ and I already had Ion Sensi Scalp at home.
**IMPORTANT** do yourself and your hair a favor, go to Walmart or Whole Foods or wherever, buy a jar or tub or Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil. Usually less than 10$ at WM. Let it melt to a liquefied state (google that, dont overheat) and apply this to your hair 24 hours or minimum an hour before you bleach.
This will seriously defend your hair against bleach damage and process your hair more efficiently than bleach alone. There is science to back it up, you can look into it as I did, but from my own personal experience, it’s a life (hair) saver**
So on top of my oily head; ew, I applied this bleach and it only took 12 minutes from application before it lightened two shades and I rinsed. It didn’t burn my scalp, it mixed easily, it didn’t smell as bad as boxed bleach or even Clairol (i attribute this to the Ion Developer which smells like apples)
I’m very satisfied with on the whole but will deff have to recolor as my once 5 golden brown is now 7/8 orange 😀
don’t forget your gloves, mixing utensils (no metal!!!), and a good deep conditioner. (I’m in fact using Aphogee’s two step protein treatment, also amazing) and of course the coconut oil!

I bought this because I wanted to bleach my hair and I’ve never died/bleached it before so I had virgin hair. I read millions of reviews for different bleaches and this one seemed to have the best results. I naturally have a level 3 or 4 dark brown asian hair and I was hoping I’d get to a platinum blonde or at least an ash blonde in one session. However, as I was applying the bleach onto my hair, (I mixed it with Ion’s Sensitive Scalp 40 vol), it started clumping up pretty quickly so it became difficult to apply onto my hair. I didn’t have any problem with my scalp itching/burning/etc. No blisters or anything, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be the same for everyone else. My hair ended up looking pretty uneven, but that’s honestly my fault and my hair started getting lighter in a matter of a few minutes. I’m hoping to do another session in a few days to a week and that’ll probably get me to the color I want (my hair is a mix or bright yellow and light brown right now).
tldr: Make sure to apply quickly because the product may clump up quickly and this bleach works extremely fast, but it will take more than once if you have dark hair.

okay so this was horrible. i mixed it with 30 volume developer. i left it on my hair for 20 minutes maximum. my scalp started tingling after a few minutes and by the end of 20 minutes parts of my scalp felt like it was on fire. i hurriedly washed it out because of the unbearable reaction… which left me with ugly orange roots. i got 5 different places as well that have chemical burns… and i kid you not, left it on for 20 minutes. very damaging as well. had to pay $120 to get my hair fixed/corrected plus what i had to spend on products for damage and repair. also would like to say that the packaging sucks. its messy.

I buy this in a tub at Sally’s with 30 cream developer and I have naturally dark brown to black Asian hair. I get to blonde in one sitting with minimal damage. It’s a blue powder so it eliminates orange gross colors. I’ve used every professional bleach and box bleach almost and never was able to get to blonde in one sitting. I think it only took me 25 min for my roots. Highly recommend this.
