While Scalpicin relieves the itching of dermatitis it only made the scales in on my scalp very hard and I was hopeful for a few days that it would help diminish them, my problem is now worse than ever, not to mention, this product burns like wildfire.

I adore this product. My scalp usually gets itchy in the morning after I’ve shampooed my hair. I used to just tolerate it for the day, until I found this. I do have the occasional dandruff attack in the winter which is usually exacerbated by my scratching, but this puts and end to the itchiness, which means less flakies. I just suffer from a dry scalp as far as I know, nothing serious, so I can’t vouche it will do much for those with severe problems. Though, my mother has tons of dandruff, this only serves as a product to relieve her itchiness, and is not a cure for her flakes.
Oh, I also love that this doesn’t weigh down my hair or really even mess it up in the slightest. 🙂

This review is for the Maximum Strength Scalpicin (Blue Package). I love this stuff, it doesnt get rid of it permanently, but it does the job at calming the itch at the moment needed for the rest of the day. It does what the packaging says ” temporairily relieves itching…”. I will keep buying it for the occassion when the dandruff shampoo fails and your stuck with an itchy scalp.

This is a medicated, leave-in treatment that does not contain coal-tar. It has a dropper/nozzle that allows it to be applied any time or place. Since it can be applied to only the areas that need it, it doesn’t affect your hairstyle. The formula is light enough that your hair doesn’t feel plastered to your head like some other treatments (Optimum Care-Daily Flake Control). This has helped with my itchiness, but it will definitely burn when applied to areas that have abrasions (ie: any area that you have recently scratched).

Having battled dry/itchy/sensitive scalp since childhood I have tried lots of things including prescriptions to keep my skin calm. Well my scalp was so itchy that it was waking me up at night so I use this in combination with the T-gel shampoo. My scalpicin is the 1% hydrocortisone version and while it does have alcohol in it, I didn’t think it burned too badly. I have used this for 2 days about 3-4 times a day and my scalp feels sooo much better and it isnt as red either.

This didn’t do ANYTHING for my flakiness….and it burned!

I have a really scaly scalp, especially around the hairline, that flakes really badly and this makes wearing my hair back on some days nearly impossible. I’ve tried numerous anti-dandruff shampoos and scalp oils and nothing helped. Then one day at the drug store, I found this little gem hiding on the bottom shelf and thought that it wouldn’t hurt to try it since it only cost about $6 CAD.
I am so glad I found this product. It is basically a clear 3% salicylic acid solution with 0.3% menthol (irritant I know but I can over look it cause of its effectiveness) that you apply to trouble spots after showering and rub into your scalp and it removes away all the flakes. There is no residue and you go about styling as usual.
NOW THIS IS NOT A PERMANENT FLAKE FIGHTER but rather a temporary one until the flakes return. However, resigned to the fact that there is nothing out there that I have found yet that will permanently cure me of my flakes, this product is wonderful for the fact that I am flake free for at least 3 days.
The packaging is practical as well. The tip is basically a dropper/squirter so you apply only to the areas you need. One bottle, with regular use on my hairline, lasts about 3 weeks.
The great thing about this product is that it is a multitasker. When I returned to Toronto, my usually blemish free, normal skin was ruined by blemishes turned into acne scars (since I picked at them). Having read that beta hydroxy is a really good exfoliator since it exfoliates inside the pore (whereas alpha hydroxy only exfoliates the surface), I decided to use this stuff on my skin, since salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy (actually the only one). I moistened a cotton pad with the product and swiped across my face. It did sting however, within a week, my acne scars had faded, my skin looked brighter, texture had improved and skin started to take on a more translucent look. After having read on this board about the aspirin mask (aspirin also contains salicylic acid), I decided to liquify my aspirins with this rather than water in order to boost the amount of salicylic acid in the mask. I also add this product to my Clean & Clear Deep Cleaning Astringent in order to boost the salicylic content on that as well. ALL THESE USES for just $6 CAD.
If there is only one product that I can recommend to you on this site, this would be the one.
