Ok, I don’t know if there are totally different recipes for this oil but I’m seriously surprised about these super ratings here. I bought this (unfortunately without reading the ingredient list first as I expected this to be just coconut oil and Gardenia – ah, how naive am I) and was expectinga natural beautiful, summery island scent coming with this oil. Well, what a letdown! I used some few drops of it on my hands and immediately got this totally artificial, annoying plastic flower scent. I left it on my hands and had to wash it off after an hour because I found so so horribly artificial and even stinging in my nose.
Then I looked at the ingredients list, and was not surprised to find this:

yes, nice really, there certainly is Gardenia scent in this oil, hidden under lots of artificial perfume (funnily even listed before the Gardenia) and at least six other added scents.
No idea why so many people love this, I really hated it and even felt like a fool believing, this was a natural product smelling like real Gardenia.
I gave this one away and now bought a real Monoi Tiare, organic, made in Italy, just having coconut oil and Gardenia in the ingredients list – nothing more. And it smells heavenly, almost like real flowers and certainly like summer and holiday.

Bought this oil as I wanted to find a natural hair moisturizer and I was finding Shea Butter to be a little to heavy for my fine 2B/2C curly hair.
Let me just say, that for an oil, this stuff is fantastic! It smells wonderful – I got the coconut scented one – and a little definitely goes a long way! Personally I use a dropper to get the stuff from the bottle to my hand, and use only about 4 to 5 drops rubbed between my hands and then distributed through the ends of my hair. If I feel I need it I will also add a few mor drops for the rest of my head – staying away from the roots of course!
I have been using the oil now for a little over 2 weeks – I wash my hair every 3 days – and also use this in conjuction with Curl Junkies Coffee-Coco curl creme and my hair has never felt so soft or looked so good!
HG stuff for me, I highly recommend

I have been using another brand of monoi oil for nearly 10 years. I love monoi – it’s a lightweight oil good for skin and hair. My primary use is for hair and I use it as an overnight oil treatment and daily on my ends.
I purchased the Vanilla scent or hei poa. At first I wasn’t sure about the glass bottle (my previous brand used plastic) but it was much easier to melt in the sink since glass doesn’t float. 😉
First application I was astounded. This is very clearly different than the monoi I’ve been using – in a good way. It’s a richer oil but still absorbs as I’d expect. Hard to explain but this brand is far superior.
The scent is a non-gourmand vanilla with definite tiare notes. My previous oil had no tiare notes at all. I’m impartial to the tiare notes either way, but adore the vanilla.
Very pleased with this purchase.

My review is for the Hei Poa brand Monoi Oil in the Aux Fleurs Tiare scent. The oil is gorgeous–you’ll need to run the bottle under warm water briefly to liquify the oil (though I find that in the summer this is usually not necessary). This oil is extremely greasy and moisturising, but is absorbed quite quickly (a little goes a long way!) I usually rub the excess left on my hands into the tips of my hair, though those of you with finer hair may find this to weigh your hair down too much. The scent is absolutely heavenly and very exotic–I smell gardenia and coconut and perhaps a bit of vanilla too. The scent lasts a long time and increases as your body heat increases. I love how this smells in combination with my TBS White Musk perfume oil too. Overall a total winner and a great product for shiny, soft, lovely smelling summer skin. Only drawback–you need to be careful not to spill too much as the bottle opening is quite big.

This monoi oil is gorgeous! I bought the version with golden mother-of-pearl and tiare scent, and it leaves a delicately light sweet scent on my skin. I expected it to smell more like TBS’s Monoi Miracle Oil, but Hei Poa’s is slightly vanillary and powdery to my nose, and only smells slightly tropical. It’s much lighter and silkier than TBS and spreads and absorbs much more easily. Tthere are very few ingredients in this, and the product itself arrived solid in a glass bottle (reminiscent of cough med. bottles), with the monoi oil on top, golden nacre settled at the base. I run my bottle under warm water as I’m in the shower or bath and it melts pretty quickly, then I shake it up to mix it and apply immediately. The nacre is supposed to emphasise a golden tan, but on my NC25 skin it’s just faintly noticeable (maybe more so in the sun but haven’t checked). If you light a few scented candles as you’re having a bath with some chill-out music and apply this afterwards it really feels like spa heaven. I’m just not keen on the glass bottle and the tacky label, but I guess it needs to be stored like this due to the nature of the oil. I highly recommend this to girls who like to spend some ‘me-time’ in the bathroom!

I’ve been on this quest to find natural oils to use on my body. I absolutely adore Neutrogena body oil and won’t stop using it, but I’m not too cool with the parabens and the artificial color. So I decided I would try the Hei Poa monoi oil. It certainly is different, since it is a solid at temps under 72 F, but it melts easily with a brief run under the water in the shower. I run the shower, heat up the bottle, take my shower, and the oil is ready to use after a quick shake. It is extremely emollient and makes my skin silky smooth. The oil is also thicker than some others I’ve used so it remains where I place it. I have also noticed that it absorbs very well. And it’s cheap!
The one thing I am trying to get used to is the smell. It is very strong, and although I like the tropical bent of this fragrance, it kills every other fragrance I try to layer over this. So I think I will only use this intermittently. I had the same problem with Alba’s body oil which is kukui nut oil-based. I don’t necessarily mind the tropical smell, but it seems that tropical oils always get a little foody-smelling on me, and I really don’t want to smell like a big ol’ dessert! I guess the scent suits me though, since I look Polynesian or Malaysian (I’m half Asian, half Caucasian) and have a strong connection to Hawaii…one of my friends commented that he really liked this scent on me too, which counts for something…at least he didn’t say, “ew, what’s that smell?”…
Lastly, I also bought the variety that has gold flecks in it. The microshimmer is super subtle, like a blond gold shimmer, no bronzing effect like Nuxe’s Huile Prodigieuse Or. But the smell of the Hei Poa is much more tolerable, so I prefer this over the Nuxe. I only wish I could find a gold shimmer body oil that didn’t smell like suntan lotion or like rotting flowers…
UPDATE: I am keeping the variety with the gold flecks, but sadly, I had to swap the other version away because my manager couldn’t deal with the smell. I can’t wear strong scents to work anyway because I deal with patients, so the swap had to happen…

I have this in the regular version- did not get the mother of pearl because I already have the shimmer version of Nuxe and couldn’t justify it. Even though this is a “summer” oil, I generally use my natural products in the winter because I’m weird like that. Then the hei poa is all hard and I have to run the bottle under hot water briefly. If you do that rather than hair dryer, then just the right amount for your application “melts off.”
I like this. The only thing that makes me reach for it less often is the smell- it smells like 80s tanning oil, and it clashes with most of my perfumes. So I only wear this with my gourmande perfumes, and I usually only do gourmande in the winter. Two perfumes it doesn’t clash with are Comptoir Sud Pacifique’s Coeur de Vahiné (must be the tiaré in it) and Coco Mademoiselle. But I don’t wear those all the time.
If you can get past the tiaré smell it’s good stuff. It’s cheap here in Switzerland (around ten francs for a four ounce bottle) and I like how it gets hard- that way I know it won’t leak bad when I pack it for trips.

I got this with the mother of pearl in. It’s gorgeous, at first i hated the smell but now i love it. I use this as a body moisturiser on occasion but mostly for my hair. I don’t reach for this every day as such but when I want it it’s there and it’s beautiful.
I would and probably will buy this again.

This is the best mono’i oil you could ever find without actually going to Tahiti or the Marquesas. There are other mono’i oils on the market, but the quality that you’ll get outside of Tahiti and the Marquesas is inferior to Hei Poa. I’m from Hawaii and am partially of Hawaiian/Tahitian descent so I grew up having my mom putting monoi on me when we were at the beach. I actually really love the scent, it brings back a lot of childhood memories. Sometimes I layer my perfume over a little bit of mono’i tiare oil. I’m not classically Polynesian looking and can’t get away with slathering this stuff on my hair unless I’m going to wash it out. I use it as a body moisturizer (I don’t put in on my face, personally) and as a tanning oil. One thing you can also do, if you tan, is to grate carrots and collect the juice and mix it with some mono’i. It gives you a golden tan as opposed to an overly dusky color or a reddish, burnt tone. Betadine works but it smells disgusting and is more likely to stain your bikini.
