Me: Long fine hair, thick, straight.
Brush: Kent LC4 (A Pure Bristle Brush)
Kent Brushes: A Royal Warrant assures a trustworthy product of good or even peerless quality, as the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh have to have used the product for five years and agreed to this honour for it to be bestowed.
Kent’s reputation, Royal warrant, having been established since 1777, and relatively low prices drove me their way, rather than any other manufacturer. I’ve owned hair brushes by Kent and Mason & Pearson in the past. Kent has also made the recent range of brushes for Bumble and Bumble.
This brush made from one piece of cherry wood is beautiful, a very tactile object, glossy smooth wood that feels delicious to touch. Kent told me this brush was designed for long hair clinics. The natural badger bristles feel firm and get through my hair, softer bristles glide over, nylon bristles may harm the hair shaft. I read that the bristles are from China where badgers are are culled as vermin. Ghastly thought. Not comfy with the idea of any creature suffering but I suppose if it was going to die with or without being used in brushes it’s about tolerable, If I don’t think about it too much which am trying not to. Am also told that these bristles cannot harm the hair shaft as they’re made from keratin like human hair.
Previously I have only combed my hair when dry, for years, in order not to lose any hair with traction.
Results with this brush: after the first brush, holding my hair as I brush to stop any pulling and having thoroughly combed it first, my hair appears fuller, silkier, shinier and I appear to have twice as much it looks so much more voluminous. I have noticed many more hairs in the brush than I would with combing but suspect and hope they were loose anyway. We’ll see. But I know I have been very gentle with the brush and my hair was knot and tangle free, so what other explanation. Anyway I can’t believe how good my hair looks, much more of a mane – it looks like it did in my twenties which is no mean feat at my age with the ongoing depletion of oestrogen, the hair’s (and looks) best friend.
There are some places on my head which the brush cannot get through due to the hair’s volume and I part and brush in those places, preferring to do this than have harsh bristles which may scratch my scalp.
Will add to this review when I see long term results.
Overall: am very pleased with this brush and the appearance of my hair after usage is transformed.
Suggestion to others: When choosing a Kent brush of from any manufacturer, don’t choose according to other’s tastes, choose the model best suited to your type of hair.
I have also bought two Kent combs, one is a detangler, the other a tail comb. They’re both handmade & saw cut, which means either side of the tine is slightly rough and helps remove any dirt such as hair spray etc. I am, as I am with the brushes, very impressed with both combs, like the brushes, they’re a giveaway price compared to Mason & Pearson but the same quality. The detangler comb makes very short work of the huge amounts of knots in my long hair and the tail comb suits its purpose well. Both have a nice weight to them, so they feel substantial not flimsy and comfy in the hand and both have nice rounded tine ends so that there is no risk of scratching the scalp. I love my new combs and smile at them because, like my Kent brush, they’re very pleasurable to use and feel, look and handle like the best of their kind.
I have also bought Kent’s shampoo and massage brush, at £3 something, it’s very cheap and have found it easy during a shampoo and efficacious for good but gentle scalp massage.

i use this brush on my two twin girls and it honestly is really great!! They usually hate brush time but with this brush they are so laid back and easy going as it doesn’t pull their hair or hurt. Lovely 🙂

I recently purchased KENT NATURAL SHINE LARGE CUSHION BRISTLE BRUSH and really love it. Its a combination of natural bristles and plasticy bristles. The plasticy bristle are so soft, it feels so good on my scalp. The natural bristles smooths out my hairs’ natural fizz.
Product description:
“This is a pure bristle brush that gives lustre and bounce for healthy hair. It prevents split ends, reduces static and adds volume.
The flexible rubber cushion has an additional Penetron filament to the bristle to aid tuft penetration through to the scalp. It is ideal for most hair types and length. The brush has inlaid rubber grips for extra control and added comfort. The handle is luxurious hand finished beechwood. ”

KENT HAIR BRUSHES – Since 1777.
The oldest brush company in the world.
Kent and Mason Pearson are my everyday brushes. Mason Pearson gets all the press – Kent less so. I was given my first Kent brush as a child. Their baby brush is all natural bristle and would work well on someone with short, fine hair.
Kent’s line of 100% Hand Made and Ladies Brushes are made in England. They are known for their fine-grained wood handles. The bristles do a superb job of distributing the oils down to the hair ends and stimulating the scalp. I still do the regular nightly brushing, even though I stopped the traditonal 100 brushes (who’s got the time?) years ago.
The price point is slightly less than Mason Pearson. And for what you pay, the brushes wear like iron and last for years. Kent has a comprehsive range of brushes for Women, Men, Children, Shaving, a Professional range for styling (wonderful!) and even one for Clothing ~ Plus a line of combs. As the oldest brush company in the world, that’s all they do.
NOTE: YOU MUST WASH THEM PROPERLY! Do NOT submberge the handle in hot, soapy water – JUST THE BRISTLES. (I know – I ruined the handle on a costly brush).
Kent has the prized Royal Warrant on its brushes. If that’s your thing – great. But as the song goes, “…That don’t impress me much”. Royal Warrants aside, I just need a brush to feel good in the hand, have quality bristles and make my hair look nice and shiny. End of story. Kent Brushes do just that.
N.B. ** I WISH they were not so costly. It is an investment in yourself, I suppose. The only mass-market brush that I would buy is Sonia Kashuk’s affordable one in Target. It doesn’t have the fancy pedigree but for the price, it’s a really good brush that does the same job as the Kent & Mason Pearson for much less. I take it when I travel, which is a lot.
Kent and Mason Pearson brushes DO tend to attract light-fingered individuals (someone swiped my prized Pocket Brush from the Powder Room a while back – during a Christmas party!) Can you imagine? So keep your eye out for any frenemies.
