I have very, dark brown hair – almost black. I used vampire red on the hair framing my face and neck (without bleach) for subtle streaks – applied to dry hair for a couple of hours. I was worried it wouldn’t show up but it did! It wasn’t vibrant and showed up dark, almost purple, but people kept stopping me to comment on my new red hair. I’ve been waiting for it to fade so I can try a new color but it’s been 4 months with no touch up and I’m still getting compliments on my burgundy streaks. Very good stuff.

One little problem with the braid was I forgot the corner is made of plastic. The ironing screws went out on the side of the plastic strip of what I had wanted it to be on. So I used paint glue. When I picked up my first aluminum the braid came out OK. I was pleasantly surprised because my hair did look pretty but I was looking for an aluminum so I can make it to the turn. It is very easy to bend but not painful. So much so that I am considering trying other companies products. I would like to see similar products all over the country to do the same but they need to adjust the way they offer more pliable like I had hoped.

I actually had my hair washed out, pretty hard to tell without thinking. Then I took the product out, took my hair out, applied what’s called a ‘barking process,’ it was a washed out area from which a piece of wire was blown down. Then when I threw up all over it and started sweeping back and forth the outer strands all turned to plastic and won’t work as I did the rest of the process. I find myself with a, flat braid tied down to my hair all day and without doubt the braid will absorb every blow and then even dip into my hair and rot away. This is what I had trying so far… It wears out fast. I give myself ~23 hours of work per day using a wash rub on my hair every few days to eliminate any organic residue off. The this product is perfect to nail my male hair. Absolutely must buy.

It is a bit pricy considering I need two full tubs each time I dye my hair but so worth the beautiful color.

I love this product. I got the best results when I left it in all night color lasted longer “stayed more vibrant.” Only thing negative I have to say about this product is it takes forever to rinsert out.

2 stars for color. It’s the nicest red semi-perm I’ve seen. That being said, NO color is worth the agony of bleeding that is vampire red. Water will never run clear. You’ll stain everything. One time I washed w SLS shampoo 5x and there were still hot pink suds. You sweat red rivulets. Forget wearing anything but black again. Vinegar rinse, cold water rinse … HA! Vampire red scoffs at you! Pillows.. Towels ruined, weeks after dyeing. A drop lands on your head and you’re screwed. Better hope it doesn’t rain! And obviously swimming is out of the question. Next!

I bought the manic panic vampire red amplified. it was very bright truly red. I had previously bleached hair to a dirty blonde reddish color, my natural hair is dark brown. Many pictures of this color look pinkish. I think it is very difficult to capture on camera. It is definitely not the color in the swatch advertised with it. It is like red silk. This was the first time dying my hair on my own and i found it to be incredibly easy and scary. I just poured the dye into a bowl, put on some rubber gloves and scooped the dye with my hands and rubbed it into my hair. then i put a plastic bag on my head. I let it sit for 3 hours and halfway through i used a blow dryer to heat it for about a half hour. My hair looks super healthy and shiny even though it was brittle and dry before dying it. I definitely recommend this product!!!!!! think of a red crayon. it i that color. Also it wasn’t messy as many other reviews claimed. I think all red dyes will get on towels and shirt collars, I have had my hair professionally dyed many times and that always happens so i wouldn’t say it is specific to this product but rather the color in general. It will often wash out in wash.

I have been an on again off again red head for half my life (naturally I am a dark blonde) I love the feeling of being a “red head” and I’ve tried many brands and types, Feria, Pravana (bit the direct dye and the permanent type you mix with peroxide), Redken, Natural Instincts, semi permanent Ion that you mix with peroxide, and Ion Brights(a direct dye like manic panic)… But I think Manic Panic Vampire Red is the best glossy vibrant red I’ve used. Ion is a similar product, but I thought the Ion Red was too pink/magenta, and it was almost as messy as Manic Panic. I love the fact that it doesn’t damage my hair. In fact, my hair seems silkier and less frizzy since I started using it. I love the color, and I love the fact I can tweak it by mixing it with other shades of manic panic or other brands of direct dyes.
Since there is no developer needed it can be mixed with your conditioner for use as a color boost in the shower, or applied at the roots for a quick touch up anytime. I have been mixing Vampire Red with Ion’s Orange, to get a more fiery look. I think in the fall I may mix in a bit of purple. I am impressed that it doesn’t fade very fast, and the faded color is pleasant. My roots are a little darker than my length but I like it that way. I retouch my hairline often, since I think from washing my face, the color fades from the fine hairs around my hairline fastest. Its pretty simple, I use a dye application brush and just leave it on a couple hours. Every month or so I do a full head application. Here’s the catch. It is truly messy (If you are not careful and prepared in advance. But, With experience you get a system. I usually wash my hair with a clarifying shampoo and air dry the day I plan to dye it. then I use clips to section my hair, I put the dye in a mixing bowl and use a dye brush, its easier than trying to fit the brush right into the dye jar. I wear salon quality gloves. I wear a disposable shower cap or a plastic grocery bag on my head after application. I leave on minimum 1 hour, longer if I have time. I put on a fresh pair of gloves and rinse, leaning back in the shower to keep the red water from staining my skin. I usually don’t use shampoo when rinsing the dye out. Then I rinse with a 50/50 vinegar/water mixture, followed by cold water rinse to really seal in the color and shine, it makes the color super vibrant and shiny. But the vinegar mixture also sets the stains in the tub :/ (think about dying Easter eggs… vinegar sets the color)
Yes my tub is stained light red, no matter how much I scrub it. Yes my hair drips pink anytime its wet. the shower water will never run clear. I use dark colored towels and sheets and it really isn’t so bad.
For maintenance, I wash my hair almost everyday with a gentle organic shampoo, because I cant stand when it gets oily, plus I do yoga and get too sweaty not to wash my hair. I will occasionally add some of the dye to my conditioner and let it sit as a deep conditioning treatment for a color boost.
My advice to control the mess is get all your supplies ready first. Keep a rag nearby to wipe up any drips on your skin or bathroom immediately, wear gloves, (both while applying and while rinsing out the dye.) Seal in the dye with a vinegar/water rinse. Use dark towels, and blow dry your hair (at least after the first rinse) to help set the color. And finally…Enjoy being a stunning red head!

I have tried so many direct dyes since I first used Manic Panic and Ion. I can now say that manic panic is my fav for a few reasons… it really seems to improve the health of my hair and its not quite as saturated as Ion and the pravana direct red (those formulas seemed too opaque almost like I painted my hair red with!) then, I went back to salon process with Pravana and vol 20 and my hair turned to straw, conclusion, I cannot take peroxide even at 20 vol…. 🙁 so I’ve gone back to manic panic applications at home. The down side is its really hard to achieve any kind of “natural” red look. and Vampire red is def not a “natural” looking red, (although it is a truly beautiful shiny deep ruby red, if that’s what you are going for) my current inspiration is the “Christina Hendricks” red look. I think I am finding the secret to “natural-ish” looking red slowly by trial and error 🙂 I use Manic Panic “Electric lava” (a red orange) mixed with Manic Panic “Electric tiger lily” (a yellow orange). I start with a more Lava to Tiger lily ratio in the bowl as I cover the roots, then add more tiger lily only as I work towards my ends. Sometimes I even add some white conditioner to sort of “pastelize” it. I leave in for anywhere from an hour to overnight. Rinse out and feel awesome, so shiny and silky! 🙂 yea, it fades out quickly from the virgin hair roots, but its super easy to do a root touch up any night I feel like I need it. It looks much more muted/natural when applied it to unbleached hair, which is a plus to me, but it also fades from natural hair way faster than it does from the chemically processed lengths my hair.
Next I want to try using Psychedelic Sunset (bright, true orange) in my mix in my never ending quest for a “natural red” result from manic panic… Any suggestions? Thanks!

Out of all the red dyes that I’ve tried over the years, Manic Panic Vampire Red is definitely my favourite with regards to colour. I’ve dyed my hair red many times (with box dye), and I’ve always kept a jar of this stuff on hand to enhance/touch up the colour.
That being said…
It’s messy. Very messy. By far the messiest hair product I have ever used. So messy, in fact, that I do not believe I shall ever use it again. I have made that promise to myself before, and always seem to wander back, forgetting about the stained clothes, the stained skin, the stained bathroom, the stained…everything…but I’m going to try to stick to my promise this time. The colour is awesome, but in my opinion, it just isn’t worth the hassle. Yes, all hair dye is messy to some degree; however, when I talk about stained skin and clothes, I don’t mean that things get stained WHILE I’m dying my hair (they do, but that’s to be expected). I mean that the dye constantly leaks and drips and stains even WEEKS after applying it. You sweat a little? Red stains on your skin and clothes. Your friend flicks some dishwater on you for fun? Red stains. It rains, or snows, or is humid, or hot? Yup, red stains. No matter how well you try to rinse your hair in the shower, it still somehow ends up dripping the second it is exposed to any moisture.
Manic Panic is fabulous, and this is a fabulous colour. If you can handle the maintenance and the staining issue, by all means, give it a try. I am simply too lazy to bother.

This review is on the original Manic Panic Vampire Red in the jar, not the Amplified version. I Picked up 2 of these semipermanent dyes in Vampire Red from Sally’s. I recently bleached the very front of my hair to try and go purple but I was too chicken to let it lift all the way so I got purple roots and plum-ish ends. Do not want. I originally used ColorFix from Sally’s as well to lift LAYERS of black hair dye before I bleached the front of my hair. Once I saw that this was possible (with minimal damage) I started thinking that I wanted my red hair back. IMPORTANT: do NOT attempt to dye hair immediately after using ColorFix. Your hair will go back REALLY dark. Trust me. So I lifted it as much as I could and a few days later I dyed my hair with Red HiColor HiLights for Dark Hair Only from L’Oreal then again with Magenta from the same brand to make it vibrant. Yes I know bad bad bad. The front was TOO bright, but I figured this would happen using a For Dark Hair Only dye on bleached hair. So I used the Vampire Red to tone that down some. You KNOW it had to be bright if this toned it down. I added a FEW drops of Adore Indigo and African Violet to make it a little darker. It really made a huge difference. It’s a DEEP red and the front just looks highlighted. I left it in overnight to intensify the color and to see if this would make it last any longer. My hair felt really overprocessed after dying it 2 times in a row. I didn’t condition it, but put this on immediately after rinsing all the dye from my head. When I rinsed my hair it felt VERY soft and almost as if I had conditioned my hair anyway. That was a BIG plus for me. This is my 1st time using Manic Panic so I can’t speak on run off and fading just yet. I’m assuming as with any temporary (or permanent) red hair color, it’ll fade really fast. This is a process I could imagine doing 2 times a month. Anymore and I’ll be aggravated lol. I don’t wash my hair with shampoo but maybe 2-3 times a month so I imagine that’ll help with making this color last. I do cowash often so the plan is to add a red semipermanent dye to whatever conditioner I’ll be cowashing with to help renew the color each time. All in all, I’m happy with this product. It did stain my skin a bit, but I’m hardheaded and I didn’t use any block or Vaseline to prevent this from happening. I wish for the price you got more product. I used 1.5 just to cover my hair. With a lot of the more inexpensive ones, I’m able to cover my entire head with one bottle. Depending on how long this lasts, I could see me buying this again. I’d like to try the Amplified Vampire Red (same company but it’s said to last longer) but I can’t find it in my area.

I’ve been looking for a dark unnatural red dye for a while. When I saw that the reviews for Manic Panic Vampire Red were mostly positive, I decided to try it. My hair is a couple of inches past my shoulders and 1 jar was just enough.( If your hair is very thick and longer than mine, you will definitely need to buy 2.) Prior to applying the vampire red, I decided to bleach my hair with L’oreal Blondissima, since my hair was very dark from previously being dyed dark brown. I only bleached my hair to a light brown shade since I was afraid of damaging my hair. After washing the bleach out I noticed that some parts of my hair were significantly darker than others. However, since I did not have any more bleach left I decided to just go ahead with the vampire red and hoped it would turn out ok. I used a brush to apply the dye and it wasn’t as messy as I thought it would be. (I’ve used way messier box dyes before using this!) I was careful not to stain my bathroom, however the dye that touched my skin ended up staining it a light pink color. When I rinsed and dried my hair I liked the color a lot, even though some parts were very dark. However, that was my fault due to the uneven bleach job I did. The color by my roots came out a brighter red and the rest of my hair was a very deep red.I dyed my hair 5 days ago and I still have stains on my skin. In my opinion the worst part of vampire red is the fact that the water will never run clear when you rinse your hair! My towel is covered with pink stains and every time my hair gets wet it bleeds. I should also mention that the dye has no unpleasant odour at all as it is a vegan product .It also left my hair feeling very soft and conditioned. Overall I like the color and the fact that the product left my hair in excellent condition. I washed my hair once since dyeing it and the color has only faded a little bit so far. I am considering trying a mixture of Vampire Red and Purple Haze next time, but first I will even out the bleach color of my hair as I would like a more even color.
