I bought UL61 high lift Ash Brown from the “Sunkissed Caramels” line. It claims to be designed to “lighten the darkest hair”. This box says it’s an ash tone so I expected little to no red/orange brassiness. For starters, this did not lighten my (“virgin” aka not previously dyed or processed) dark brown hair even close to what the box depicts (I left it on for 30 minutes). It came out dark with barely noticeable lift (maybe one half shade) and ugly, orange, brassy tones instead of the Golden Ash Brown depicted on the box. I mixed the correct amounts (ratios) on two occasions for a Balayage (different areas each time) and got the same result. The second time I made sure to coat the hair ends heavily but that did not make a difference.
The only positive thing I have to say is that the color comes liquid in a bottle instead of a tube so mixing small amount of this is easier than with boxed hair color that has a thick cream housed in a tube. The gloves are good quality, and the generously sized tube conditioner is nice, if you care about that sort of thing.
I have used light brown (ash) shades from other brands (both regular color and “high lift” formulas) and gotten more lift with little to no orange brassiness. I expected this to have more lifting power, as the product claims and photos depict it being quite dramatic. I wouldn’t use this again since it doesn’t seem like an ash tone at all and failed to lighten “the darkest hair”, what it was specifically designed to do.

It didn’t lift as much from my original hair color as I would like.
The look I was going for: Since I’m allergic to hairdye, I’m EXTREMELY careful to only balayage or ombré my hair and wanted a sun-kissed look for early fall. I have stubborn Asian black hair that hasn’t been dyed or bleached in a while. If you have hair that’s past your shoulders, I would recommend getting two boxes. One box was enough to just color half my hair (reaches my elbows).
On the box it promises to lift natural, black hair to a medium shade of cool ash brown but after combing it through and waiting 30 minutes for processing, it only lifted one shade. So now my black hair gradually fades into a very dark shade of brown – it’s almost imperceptible. My hair does look slightly lighter but it doesn’t look the ash brown printed on the front of the box, which is what I was hoping for! I definitely got a sun-kissed caramel look so not all is a loss, but more lifting power would be nice!

Ok so I decided to ombre my hair with their ombre kit. My hair is black so it turned to a red orange hot mess.
After spending $100nzd on dye and toner nothing worked it just went more red and looked cheap.
I bit the bullet and tried this it is now amazing!!!! Perfect light ash brown and no orange brass.
Amazing colour!!
Packaging not so great it was messy but with a great colour pull I cant really fault it.
Thanks Loreal !!!!! <3
Conclusions :
The top part looks very basic with the blend color just not very good at all.
Finishing was off some heavy flaking.
But no but. It still got brighter, less sinewy and far more lustre colours than I expected.
One final observation is that the light edition looks even stronger than the essential black peachy results.
Overall results :
3.5 stars
It's a matte colour palette which makes it pretty nice to use, but as you might expect from a smooth black that's all the silvery white is loose undertones and saturated even before your eyes look at it. I'd only reapplied 2 and a half times since it didn't work out so well.
Unsurprisingly the matte retinal shades look quite good as well. I'd like to think that goes for this color first and looking at some of the better shades at RDL :
5 stars!
I'm sure it won't turn your hair blue, but you know that smell usually does too.
I'm sure it will only work when with slow drying you might lighten it up but I also don't think my skin would break down and never need an additional blotter.
A bit more non colour free and my complexion looks even more warmer this way.

***NOTE: If you previously colored your hair black or dark brown this will not lift your colored hair. To lighten previously dyed dark brown or black hair you will need to first strip the dark dye out with either a hair color remover (i.e Color Oops) or bleach.***
I wanted to take my hair lighter for the summer without having to bleach it. I purchased SUPERIOR PREFERENCE LC61 EXTRA LIGHT ASH BROWN (in the USA it is UL61). Prior to coloring my lengths were more of a medium golden brown color from using the Wella 7A color.
The instructions state to first color the lengths and ends and then during the last 10 minutes to color the roots as they process faster than the lengths due to your body heat. I applied it to the lengths, about 1/2 an inch away from my roots and wrapped my hair in plastic wrap to keep the heat in. I let this process longer than the instructions said to, about 40 minutes before I applied it to my roots. I then wrapped more plastic wrap over my head, making sure my roots were covered. Once it was applied to my roots I let it process for about 10-15 minutes, checking it frequently. Total processing time was about 50 minutes. The color I was left with was a beautiful caramel color (think J Lo).
I will admit the color smelled quite strong (so use this in a very well ventilated area) & it left my ends a bit dry but I think that is due to the previous bleaching I’ve done to my hair from my highlights. It’s nothing a deep conditioning treatment and coconut oil will not fix. I also don’t plan on using this on my lengths and ends anymore since I achieved the lightness I was seeking. Plus I think because this is such a strong color it would just damage my hair if I repeatedly applied it to my lengths. Overall it’s a great product that lightens hair without the brassiness, especially for people like myself whose hair pulls very warm red tones.
I posted a before and after in the pictures. First pic on the left is 7A Wella color and the one to the right is the LC61 in natural light. And one more outdoors in natural light.
