Summary: tones great, but not much lightening
2 months ago I dyed several strands of my light brown hair a pale golden blonde in an attempt to highlight. I should have known from the box that it was too brassy for me and clashed with my cool undertones.
Recently I chose L’oreal Superior Preference Ash Blonde 8A to lighten the virgin light brown/dark blonde hair while simultaneously toning my brassy strands. This dye did an amazing job at removing the brass – it turned my botched highlights into a stunning caramel blonde hue thanks to 8A. However, some of my naturally blonde strands darkened to a light brown, and my light brown virgin strands were barely lifted (I know box dyes aren’t supposed to lift light brown hair as much as the box says but this was NO lift compared to other blonde dyes I’ve used)…. So some of my naturally blonde strands came out even darker which disappointed me. I’d imagine there’s not that much bleach/peroxide since I had any lift – however I must say I did like how gentle it is as my hair did not feel dry the next day which happens with many blonde box dyes that I’ve used. So this is great for someone looking to tone without wanting to do any more damage on their hair.
This shade is an excellent option for someone with a dark orange or even red undertone they’re looking to tone into a cool color – think botched bleach job that’s too dark for a light toner. However, if you’re looking for blonde strands or to lift your color, try one of L’oreal’s lighter shades
