All my greying ladies need to know about this! Well, I’m pretty blown away anyway.
I bought the shade 800 dark brown. I’m naturally medium to dark brown with strong reddish hues. This is a somewhat colder brown that completely covers the copper cast in my hair
(and I prefer it so). It turned out almost black, which I expected and was going for (for a natural looking black without blueish tones, I always go with the darkest browns).
I’m greying badly for my age and find it hard to keep on top of my greying problem with dye, but this covered every. single. grey. completely.
Usually, even if I get some semi decent grey coverage, the greys by the sides of my face reappear within days from frequent face washing and cleansing, but it’s been three weeks and I only have like three little ones near my ear, everything else is still dyed, and I don’t notice any fading in color yet.
With my current lob cut, I can get away with using one box of certain dyes, but I probably should’ve used two in this case. It’s not very spreadable so I panicked a little when I noticed I barely have any left for the lengths. I tried spreading the dye but it didn’t look like I got much on my ends at all so I expected to be very patchy – but wasn’t!! I actually got uniform coverage all over!
The smell wasn’t terrible, didn’t have a problem with the fumes, nor ANY scalp irritation. No dripping.
The packaging is standard, the developer bottle has room for dye so you don’t need a separate bowl to mix them. Note that Palette Deluxe dyes have purple under the picture, unlike the regular schwartzkopf palette (which I avoided due to the reviews). Comes with two packets of conditioner (which I find nothing special, but that’s fine by me).
It left my hair just a little dry, but not beyond what a good conditioner can solve, and definitely not enough to encourage breakage or splitting. I straight ironed my hair about three times a week since the dye job and my hair took it well.
The one thing it doesn’t do is leave your hair very shiny and lustrous, so I suggest using a separate product if you want it glossy, but it doesn’t leave it dull looking either.
Four lippies only because it could be just a bit more spreadable, and if it added a little shine too I’d never buy anything else again.
I’ll try the Live dyes again next time as I used to get great results with them about twelve years ago, curious about the current formula. If they still are long lasting, extra shiny, and happen to also cover greys, I’d love to go back to them. Otherwise, I’ll not complain if i’m “stuck” with this dye, the coverage and non irritating formula are splendid.
Unless shine is a priority, I recommend, especially for greying hair. I’m amazed with the grey coverage of this one!
