I was looking for a dark neutral brown to cover very red roots and washed out auburn dye, my hair was very uneven and matte and all I wanted was to go back to my natural color (dark ash brown, level 3 or 4) I did a swatch with #43 but it made my hair redder so I decided to try #40. The mix in the bowl looked like a grayed green, ashy mix, the dye evened and darkened everything out and also covered my gray hair, I can see a few pieces were I missed so I am going to have to go back and recolor. The color comes out like the front of the box of #30, it looks nothing like the side swatches or the picture on front. It’s a very dark and shiny espresso brown, anyone with medium brown or lighter color hair would feel like this color looks black but it’s one step below black/darkest brown, I am happy that is a true dark brown that doesn’t come out black like most dyes. I am still in a bit of shock to see my hair this dark but my skin looks alive, my make up looks great, perfect color for NC-20 with natural dark brown hair who wants to go back to dark brown and not black. The only con is that it stains skin like crazy (black stains) and the smell is super strong but I didn’t get any allergies, itchy or painful scalp, no hair loss in the wash either, I was washing my hair my for a while and the water kept coming out brown.
