I am going to try it a second time and leave it on longer. It surprised me how quickly it faded back to my gray hair color. In 3 weeks it’s gone. I love that you don’t have strong ammonia smell that others have. The color was nice but just didn’t last. I will try again and leave it on longer

This product is a bit more expensive than traditional drugstore brands but it’s worth it. Doesn’t dry my hair out as much as other hair dyes, has quite good staying power, even on stubborn grays, and doesn’t have the overwhelming smell of other dyes. I naturally have dark brown, coarse curly hair with a lot of grays, but use the natural dark blonde because 1) darker hair doesn’t suit me as I age and 2) as my hair ages it seems to absorb the color so that even light brown comes out too dark.

I’ve been dying my hair with this product for the past 5 years or so. I use it on my roots every 4-5 weeks, and every 3rd month I use it on all my hair. So far so good! I have thick, fine, wavy hair that is a few inches past my shoulders. My natural hair color used to be a dark chestnut brown with a lot of red undertones. Sadly less than half of that color remains. I wanted to gradually and subtly lighten my hair so the gray would blend better as my hair grows fast and I hated having a solid line of white. I started with 3N , then 4N and now 5N. You have to use the N series to cover gray. It’s equal parts color and developer, and very easy to use and relatively unmessy. If you’re only doing roots most of the time like I do it’s cheap and convenient and a box lasts me 3 months. I’ve never had it sting myself like professional and drug store hair dye. It does NOT have a noxious odor. It doesn’t leave residue on your towels and doesn’t stain your skin if you use soap and water. It DOES have PPD and hydrogen peroxide. But, face it, no permanent dyes are 100 % chemical free. The darker the color the more PPD. That said, this brand has pretty much the minimum amount you can use and still have it work. In one year of using Garnier Olea “natural” ammonia free color I ended up with the top layer of my hair sticking up in 2 inch broken off pieces. 5 plus years of this and my hair is minimally damaged and thicker than ever (I have always struggled with frizz BEFORE hair dye). The only problem is it’s not easy to find. Amazon sells it but overcharges and does not have variety. Not many stores carry it, but I’ve heard you can call the number on the box and order it directly from the company.

NaturColor hair dye by Herbeceuticals, Inc., is one of my favorite hair dye products.
The reason it’s only one of my favorites instead of the favorite is because it is so difficult to find in stores or to buy online. They must manufacture it in small batches and therefore can not distribute it massively. Not sure why it is not in all stores.
However, I recently learned that you can buy this hair dye directly by calling the number listed at their website. NaturColor.com or on the box. Yay!
This dye has a pleasant odor, does not damage my hair, covers gray hair, and does not stain the skin or sink or wood cabinets, if wiped off within about a half hour. Even when I have waited longer to wipe it off, the dye still comes off with some hard scrubbing.
On my hair, this dye appears so natural. It leaves my hair soft, shiny and seemingly highlighted with pretty translucent highlights. I always get compliments when I use it. It appears to provide a multi-tonal color that looks like hair that has never been dyed.
The best way to ensure gray coverage is to follow their instructions to start with clean dry hair, free of any hair products. Then, put a little developer on the grays first for ten minutes, before wiping it off and starting the full dye process. It works well for me.
This product will make your hair slightly lighter if you use a color that is obviously lighter than your own hair. In the instructions, it is stated that it can lift the hair two levels. I have personally experienced this. I later went back to a darker color that was closer to my own. Nevertheless the lighter colored looked great.
So, if you do not want to lighten your hair color somewhat, choose a color that is very close to your own natural shade or one shade lighter.
I would avoid using a darker color first, unless you really really really want a darker color, because it will be darker and I am not sure if using a lighter version of this product after using a darker color will allow lifting of color in the hair that has already been permanently dyed.
I personally have not had an allergic reaction or a adverse to this product, although I notice that some reviewers have mentioned this.
Even though this product has a lot of natural ingredients, anyone can be allergic or have an adverse reaction to any thing. So a patch test is a must, in my opinion, no matter which product you use.

Wow! I’m in love! A little background – I’ve been coloring my hair for decades mostly just because I didn’t want to embrace my natural dark brown. My latest color was a caramel-y, slightly coppery tone, and I had about a half inch root growth of my natural dark brown mixed with about 20% gray. At 42, I didn’t want to accept the grays so in the past few years since they’ve become more prominent, I’ve been shelling out $120 every five weeks to have them covered. Money has been particularly tight so I started stretching it out to six weeks. By week four I was self conscious of someone was standing above me for any reason and could see my gray. My temples are quite gray/white now. One time my longtime hairdresser went out of town for an emergency and a substitute did my hair for me. Whatever she used, the fumes were the worst ever and I felt panicky (I’m very chemically sensitive). My regular hairdresser had put in the notes for her “gray VERY hard to cover.” So I’d always assumed my grays required industrial strength dye. Well recently I’ve really encountered a budget crunch and had to cancel my color appointment coming up. I then began researching DIY dyes for gray hair. That’s where I came across Just for Men. I read a bit of good reviews and then nearly went out the door to Rite-Aid to buy me a box. But, fortuitously, I got sidetracked and ended up on a consumer complaints page wherein a whole lot of people said Just for Men gave them horrible chemical burns. Granted it was the beard formula but still, I sensed the company was unethical and decided against their product. That’s when I remembered my local health food store had Naturcolor and that I’d taken a pic of it out of curiosity months ago, just in case I wanted to investigate. Well I did so and it brought me here. The reviews here put me at ease if not make me a bit suspicious. How could this hair color be so…intuitive? So gentle, so pretty? One reviewer said she mixed 6N Sagebrush brown with 7R Turmeric blond. I bought one of each and also mixed enough for one bottle. My hair is thick and shoulder length but only one bottle was needed, so I have the rest for next time. I paid $13.99 for each box. Application was pretty easy. I made sure to coat my temples pretty well, and my part lines, but was not particularly vigilant about other root areas as I don’t wear my hair up. I left it on the roots for 25 minutes then applied the rest mostly to the outer layers of my hair which are dyed, the underside is mostly my natural color. Was hoping for a really special color but I got a pretty dark brown with reddish undertones but it’s still beautiful. I literally ended up two shades darker, but I was impressed by how refreshed it made me look versus my washed out coppery color. Perfect for fall. Best of all my “very hard to cover” gray IS covered, even my temples! I flat ironed my newly glossy (yes! So glossy!) chocolate brown with red and gold highlights and I look amazing! Younger even, because my hair is just so shiny! Plus my roots somehow ended up the same shade as the rest of my hair, this really is a sort of “intuitive” dye. I’ve been to salons and spent over $100 only to have my roots still darker than the rest of my hair. I can’t believe this product exists. Next time I’ll probably aim for a shade lighter to allow my salon-dyed color to show through more, but I’ll have to choose an “N” shade to mix with the 7R again, perhaps one N shade below the Sagebrush Brown. I’m so thrilled to think that I may not have to visit a salon for several more months! I may go back at some point just for highlights, but continue to touch up the roots myself with this product. 10/30 Update – I’ve used this product two more times since my initial review and am thrilled! No more long hours at the salon, high prices, harsh chemicals and dried out hair! I experimented and added 7N “Yarrow Blond” to the other two colors, 1/3 each. I like this but the coverage of the grays is definitely more blonde-y which I don’t mind really. It still blends really nicely with the rest of my hair and since the grays are more of a blonde-y copper color it gives a highlighted appearance. When I catch a glimpse of myself in a window outside, I am always impressed by how beautiful the color is. So rich and translucent, not flat at all. I never would have thought that my grays which have been a challenge for my hairdresser with harsh chemicals, could be so easily covered by this far more gentle formula, by me, at home. I’ve read about women making the difficult choice to stop coloring their hair but I wish they knew about this product. There is no need to accept gray hair when something so easy, affordable, and gentle exists. I color every 4 weeks and use Style Edit root spray in auburn if I need to touch up roots for an event or something, before I want to re-color my hair. My hair continues to look healthier all the time and I’m even growing hair at my temples I didn’t have before, proof that salon dyes were preventing proper growth. I’ll keep using this stuff forever. Life changing!

This is the most gentle hair color I’ve ever used. I have dry, brittle hair and it made it very soft. The colors come out darker than shown on the box, which seems to be standard for most hair color. The reason I will not be repurchasing is that it starts fading after only a week. Other natural hair color seem to last at least 3, so I’ll revert back to one of those.

I saw this coloring at Whole Foods, and, being in that Whole-Foodsy mood, I thought, “I should probably use natural haircoloring and save some polar bears.” So…I bought this in 4R, Sienna Chestnut, just to touch up my roots. On the outside of the box, it says “Hand-Crafted in the USA using the finest color pigment from Italy” and “Napa Valley California”. However, every product in the box is labeled “Made in Italy”. I don’t care if it’s made in Italy or anywhere else, but I felt like the box was trying to pull one over on me, and I don’t appreciate that. This is DARK. It colors thoroughly, but it’s inky, and it doesn’t have highlights. It’s extremely tenacious for about a week. There’s no odor, it doesn’t stain the scalp, or tingle, and it rinses out like a dream. I applied with a brush applicator but this comes with a squirt-top bottle you can use for application after mixing the colors in it. I wish all hair color felt this “fresh” on my hair. Unfortunately, the color faded within a couple of weeks and my grays looked like I tried to cover them with food coloring (not a “natural” look). The main reason I wouldn’t repurchase this is it contains PPD (p-Phenylenediamine/Paraphenylenediamine/Coal Tar), which hair color companies are trying to remove from dyes, because of the severity of reactions it causes in people who are allergic to it, including contact dermatitis; (it has killed people). I don’t think I’m allergic to PPD, but allergies can develop at any time, and I have plenty of them. Therefore, I prefer to use hair coloring that doesn’t have PPD. (I buy inexpensive coloring at Sally Beauty that doesn’t have PPD in the shades I use).

I’ve been using Garnier Nutrisse to colour my 10% grey, but after seeing a photo of myself with red-looking roots, I’ve decided to try Naturcolor’s Light Burdock. My immediate thoughts:
– No burning-scalp feeling: I didn’t have any sensation of my scalp being burned by chemicals using Naturcolor. (I always felt a burning with Nutrisse.)
– No hair-dye stink: either in the air, or left on my hair. My head would always reek for at least 1-2 days after using Nutrisse. With Naturcolor, there is no odor and in fact, the ingredient list shows herbals essences like lavender at the top of the list.
– The colour is darker than the hair swatch and website image: I chose 5N Light Burdock, and it blended in seamlessly with my black hair. Therefore, I can’t imagine how dark the “blackest black” would appear (1N Licorice) but I assume it would be extremely black! One reviewer here said that the Naturcolor’s will appear 2 shades darker on your hair; I would have to agree with her. I will be trying one shade lighter (6N Sagebrush Brown) next time.
– My hair looks shiny and the colour is believable: my hair looks glossy and doesn’t have a fake-colour clown-hair appearance. Light Burdock covered up the red tones and whereever I really saturated my roots, there are no signs of grey. (I messed up at my crown and did not apply enough gel, so the roots were not totally covered. Will remember to saturate next time!)
– No warning of “explosions”: drugstore haircolours always warn about “explosions” if you leave the developer and colour together. Is this not a clear sign that you should not put these chemicals on your hair?? Naturcolor’s pamphlet has no such warning so it feels good knowing that you’re not putting explosive stuff on your scalp!
– The pamphlet does suck a bit: It looks like a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy. I can live with it though; it’s about the product, right?
– It’s worth the $: I was gettng Nutrisse for about $7 CAD/box. Naturcolor is about $22 CAD at Whole Foods. For the believable colour, shinier looking hair, non-burning and non-stinking experience, I feel it’s worth the money.
I will update after I wash my hair a few times and will report back the results!

After 3 weeks, the colour has faded to a nice dark brown. My hair feels in much better condition than when I was using Nutrisse; not as stripped and fried-feeling. Also after 3 weeks, it was time to touch up my roots again. This time I tried 6N Sagebrush Brown and pulled it through most of my hair. My hair looks nice and glossy and dark. I am anticipating that it will lighten up again, so I’ll report back what shade it lightens to after a couple of weeks. I like this hair colour… it’s just so pricey, but worth it for the lack of harsh chemicals.

I used to use Garnier or Clairol, but a friend with beautiful hair color suggested I try her brand, Naturcolor. It is a “natural” hair color product, sold at health food stores such as Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods. It is annoying that you can’t buy it online.
It is designed so that you can mix colors together very easily to achieve the result that you want. The company has excellent telephone advice, as well.
I use Yarrow Blonde 8N plus Woodruff Blonde 8C to cover gray. It is extremely cheap for me since I have short hair and use two tablespoons of color and developer every 3-5 weeks. I can vary my formula for different effects each time. More Yarrow covers the gray but looks more red; more Woodruff looks more like my natural color and is more subdued.
I like the fact the product does not stink or stain and fades beautifully into a natural looking color as it wears off. The color sinks into different colors of hair differently, giving a natural looking array of colors, at least in the lighter colors I use. Clairol and Garnier looked totally uniform on my head, which I didn’t like, since my natural color is quite variegated, blonde, brown and red. I never get a defined line with my roots or gray showing with this product.
The packaging is very nice and easy to use, all except the tiny bottle of shampoo, which is so runny that I wasted most of it the first time I used it. Be careful pouring it out!
