This is my go to box color for the fall when I do not highlight my hair. Works well and really is brass free. The color last a decent will too. I wash my hair about every 1-2 days and the color last a little under two months.

I go back to this product time and time again. I have very fine dark brown hair with about 5% gray. This blends in the gray, tames the frizz and gives my locks an overall boost of shine that lasts at least a month. I don’t have a ton of hair so I can space out the color boost and conditioner to get more mileage out of the color. I just used it to tone down some highlights that I got earlier in the summer that had started to get brassy. I think this works especially well on me because of my super-fine hair.

Works awful. For some reason didn’t change the color of my hair other than making it a awful red color

This is my first review. I bought this dye in Medium brown 2 weeks ago based on reviews on this site. My hair length is down my mid back and only the last 4 inches still have some faded dark blonde highlights I did years ago. My natural color is light ash brown and I wanted to darken it just slightly to give it that rich, chocolate look without going too dark. I also didn’t want something permanent just in case I didn’t like the color so I decided on Clairol’s demi permanent line which supposedly washes out in 28 shampoos according to the box. Anyway I should have taken heed when I read reviews here that states it comes out very dark brown at first because that’s exactly what happened. Also, the ends of my hair where the highlight had been absorbed more color and is darker than the rest of my hair. The good thing is it didn’t give me reddish tones but the color was very dark brown. It stayed dark brown until a week and a half ago when it started to fade. Now it resembles the color in the box more but still darker than my natural color. It’s also translucent now instead of just a block of color. I like that this had a very pleasant smell and the conditioner that you apply after was just wonderful as it made my hair so soft and shiny. My hair didn’t feel dry afterwards either. I think this is a color I will purchase again in the future if I want to go darker.

I used this demi-permanent dye in this very shade for the purpose of toning down the brassiness on my hair from a previous permanent dye job. My natural color is a level 5 medium brown but before using this dye, my previously dyed hair had turned an auburn-orangey shade. I wanted to use this to neutralize the orange tone. At first it came out really dark, more like dark brown as opposed to “medium brown” but this is to be expected since my hair had been previously colored. After 3 washings, it lightened up to a more natural, neutral medium brown pretty close to my natural hair color. Now a month later there is still some color left on my hair. At the very least the brassiness my hair previously had hasn’t returned to where it was.
I wash my hair with a shampoo made for color treated hair every other day or 4x a week and this helped make the color last a bit longer than it would otherwise. All in all, good to use as a corrective measure to tone down brassiness in previously colored hair without further damaging it since it only contains a low level developer. Also good for subtlety changing or to deepen natural color but since it’s a demi permanent, it doesn’t last very long. It also can’t lighten hair if you want to go one or two levels up since it’s “deposit only” color. For the most part, it’s good for something that doesn’t require long term commitment, unlike a permanent dye.

I am in my late 30s, dark-brown hair, no gray yet. I have red-highlighted hair that I’m trying to grow out. I got an all over in-salon color glaze three months ago, which worked great but at what price! I decided to try to do it on my own. My problem was that my highlights looked VERY brassy, so the “no brass” on the packaging got my attention. This color was easy to apply (although I would prefer a foam formula for at home, at least it didn’t run all over everything) and the smell wasn’t bad. The color it produced is really nice. Nice and rich, but not opaque, so I can still see the color variations in my hair. I’m glad I found out about this product because I really need to quit spending so much on hair color…this might allow me to quit!

I have medium brown hair naturally but I am starting to get a few greys. I used this product the last time I colored my hair which was at least three months ago, so I did the “whole head” application. My hair is fine and only just longer than shoulder length at its longest point and one bottle/kit almost did not cover all my hair. I was really disappointed with this as I could imagine myself running to the nearest drug store with a plastic bag on my head so I could get more product… not good. I guess I will have to buy two if I use this again. I always end up with some brassiness no matter what so I chose this formula for that reason. I can see a bit of redness but only in sunlight. This color comes out on me, initially, really dark–not medium brown but dark brown but it lightens up after a couple of cleansings. I try to only wash every second or third day so this color stays pretty well on my hair and fades gently, almost without my knowing it, as my natural color is very close to this after it lightens up. Healthy Instincts makes my hair soft, shiny and looking beautiful, which is why I always go back to this brand even after trying other types and brands of colors. For grey coverage, I’d give this a 3 out of 5. It covered my few greys but I already see one peeking through and I’ve only washed my hair once since coloring. I think I will try the brush-on grey coverage (like mascara) that I have seen, just to spot cover my few that pop up, especially near my part and around my face. I have never tried the color refresher that comes with this but I will be trying it this time. I will update my review at that time. I gave the packaging a “3” because some of the developer bottles had loose or leaking tops in the store. I always check this in the store as it is a problem across the board. I’ve gotten home and had product leaking in my bag before…arg. I also listed price as a “4” because anyone with hair longer than chin-length hair should use two boxes to ensure maximum coverage.

Have been coloring my own hair for over 16 years. Smell during application was surprisingly pleasant. Also pleasantly surprised at v. small amount of hair color that deposited on towel immediately after rinsing out color. Hair felt soft and smooth after conditioning w/included conditioner. I have quite a bit of red in my hair naturally, and when I color it (med to med-dark brown) it often tends to look brassy. As the color slowly fades out, the brassiness gets worse. My results: great initial color, not brassy at all, but also not too cool in tone – very nice. I will def use this product next time I color.

My hair always pull red when I color it. Whether I do it or get it done at a salon, even when picking cooler colors, it always goes red to some extent.
This is the only product that I have ever used that really does minimize the red — in fact, for the first couple of days after I color it with this product, the red is completely gone. I get gorgeous, soft, chocolate brown hair.
Now, it’s demi-permanent so it doesn’t last long. And I agree with others that this is not the best at covering gray. I don’t have too much, so that doesn’t matter much to me.
Will definitely re-purchase.
