Medium Brown is now #5, which correlates to shade scale that pro’s use with 1 being black, and 10 being light blonde. I am a long time colorer and have tried all sorts of brands and semi, demi, and permanent color. Most recently I had used Clairol Beautiful which had a decent shade range, and was very conditioning but was essentially a rinse that only last a few washes. I had last used natural instincts over a dozen years ago. Being a boxed dye and a demi, this runs a bit dark. It’s probably close to a level 3 or 4, and definitely a dark brown, but not black. This is just slightly drying compared to semi permanent color, but comes with a generous tube of conditioner. If you want medium brown, I would go with shade 6 or possibly 7. I’m quite fair and this shade does wash me out a bit, but luckily it will fade. The undertone is predominantly neutral to slightly ashy.

This is a review for the Clairol Natural Instincts 5 Medium Brown, former 20 Hazelnut. A little over a month ago I used Garnia Olia and while it worked okay, I wanted to try something else because the way it faded left me looking in need of a serious dye job! I picked this up after a friend who has been using it for over 10 years suggested I give it a try, price is very inexpensive (I want to say this is like the second or third cheapest dye that I saw). It was very easy to apply, instructions very clear, and I really like that you only have to leave it on for 10 minutes! I felt like there wasn’t enough product in the bottle and I used the very last drops, not sure if this is because my hair has gotten longer or what, but either way it ended up being fine. The conditioner included left my hair feeling soft and silky and I have not noticed any damaging effects from the dye as of yet. Now, I have to say…this dye has EXCELLENT coverage. It is not splotchy or weird looking in any places and it looks even throughout. Which is a PLUS especially because I’m always worried I’ll miss a spot. I have to be honest, but the color is a bit darker than I expected but I do like it. On me, it looks more like a very dark brown/nearly black but I’m assuming this will fade with a few washes so no big deal. I’ll try and post a picture of the results on here if I figure out how to. The color is also very glossy and not flat, which is a huge plus! Overall, I am very pleased with how this turned out BUT I would caution some people if they want a lighter shade of brown to pick a light brown over a medium because this may be too dark for some. I will most likely repurchase again, in a month or so when it fades.

Goodness, what happened to this product? Hazelnut used to be my go-to color for going dark, but I hadn’t used it in about three years. It used to be a very rich, beautiful color. To be fair, the initial result is still amazing. But it faded very quickly, which prompted me to use the “color refresher.” WHAT is going on??? It left my hair auburn. Not even just a red cast, we’re talking straight-up copper. There’s one especially bright strand of copper hair on the left side. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against red hair, but this is NOT what I signed on for! And I’m not sure what I’m going to do now.

I absolutely love this dye. I bought it looking for a chocolate-toned shade that wouldn’t be too off-setting to my coloring. I picked up this thinking “hey, why not?”. It wasn’t a dark or light shade, it was a medium, and that worked for me. So when I brought it home and used it, I was very surprised, though not unpleasantly, to find that it was more of a dark chocolate color as opposed to milk chocolate, which I’d been aiming for. It’s a beautiful color and although it has reddish undertones, they complement my coloring nicely. I had a bad experience with the Clairol Natural Instincts dye before, but this was the old formula — it had made my hair dry, strawlike, and all-over just horrible. It took months for my hair to become less frizzy, so I was apprehensive about re-dyeing my hair, but I really like the new formula. It’s a very rich-toned color, and I just love it. I’ve received nothing but compliments.
