I bought this die for $2 so the price was good. the color I got was vivid burgundy but now my hair is bright purple and not like a fushia purple that could have been red. it is Barney colored purple.
I would never recommend this die to anyone and I will never buy it again

Revlon Colorsilk buttercream hair color, 30 brown black
I normally prefer the original Colorsilk (in shades Natural Blue Black or Brown Black) to other drugstore hair dyes but decided to give this one a try. It ended up working well on my hair. I think this will be my go-to for root touchups and the original Colorsilk will be for my all over color.
I just needed to just touch up the roots so I was able to use only one box of the shade 30 -20N brown black. I love that it did not leave any red tones in my hair at all. It is just a natural dark brown almost black color. The 3-in-1 brush that is included was very helpful in dividing my hair and spreading the product right at my roots where I needed it most. After applying I gently blended the color down just a bit on my hair using the 3in1 brush and waiting the recommended time. Towards the end, I applied the remaining product to the length of my hair, to make sure the color blended well, and let it sit 5-7 mins then rinsed it out. The color came out perfect. It covered everything and the color blended right into my hair. My hair is shiny and natural looking, does not feel dry at all and no one can tell I have dyed it.
It has been 2 1/2 weeks and nothing so far is peaking though YAY!
I will definitely repurchase.

I bought this and my hair is naturally brown. I wanted to dye my hair back from pink highlights, and it all washed out. I left it in for 5 extra minutes. Very unhappy.

I LOVE this dye! I have used the regular Revlon ColourSilk before and wasn’t so impressed. The buttercream version is great! I have been dying my hair a lot over the last 5 years and I stopped bleaching it over a year ago and since have been trying to treat it better and not dye it so much…however it is still in quite a bad condition.
My colour had faded loads and gone very brassy so I decided to dye my hair black. I used the 10N Black shade.
The product was very easy to manage and went through my hair easily compared to other dyes I have used. I have hair down to my bra strap so I bought 2 boxes. However I only needed to use one which was amazing! Even when my hair was shorter I normally needed 2 boxes so I was very happy with how far the product went! It smells lovely and washes out really easily. I had cleaned my bath the day before so was a bit gutted that I was going to wreck it with hair dye but there were absolutely no stains! There were a few stains on my neck but nothing major and they look like they will fade in a few days.
The conditioner that came in the box was also very good and went further than I thought. My hair feels in even better condition than it was before and very shiny. The black is a great colour. Lots of depth compared to black dyes such as the XXL ones that make your hair colour look very flat.
I can’t speak to the longevity of this dye as I only applied it last night, but so far I am very happy and would definitely buy again!

I had dyed medium brown hair that started to go extremely brassy. I wanted a permanent color that could get me as close to my natural color (dark brown) so I could begin the process of growing my natural haircolor out. I chose “dark brown” hoping to get a true, dark brown color. I applied it and left it to process for 20 min. Right before I was about to wash out my hair, it looked jet black. I started to panic and washed it off. Once dry, it was not jet black but a beautiful dark brown color, very similar to the picture on the box. I’m very pleased with how it turned out! Also, it is very shiny and soft, and I notice no additional damage or breakage from using this dye. If anything, it looks healthier now after I dyed it. I am really hoping the color does not fade quickly. As long as it lasts a decent amount of time, I will definitely be repurchasing!!!

I was warm brown with highlights. I went over it with light ash brown. Covered very well. Very even. Did not leave my hair dry at all. The conditioner smells amazing. For box dye this was good stuff. Not sure how long the color lasts. I’ve washed three times. Still looks good. Overall this is a good product for the price. No ammonia was key for me.

Background : 21 year old , coarse thick curly black hair down to my bust. I have a lot of it and it is hard to manage.
This is the only dye that makes my hair manageable through out the whole application process. It is non damaging and every time I use it my hair feels stronger and healthier. I have used this dye for about six months and I could not be happier. It doesn’t last very long but that is worth it to me.
$4 a box with out damage I’m fine with buying it. I used to use ganier but it smelled horrible and made my hair feel horrible. The men in my house would complain of the smell. With this. There is no smell. No burning . it simple. Easy. Fast. And efficient. Andy hair is very difficult this is the only dye gentle yet efficient enough for my hair.
I love it!

some background: i have fine, oily, wavy hair, tons of it, down now to just past my shoulderblades, and i’ve been using this dye in soft black for about four and a half months now. i’ve always stayed away from dyes because my hair is hilariously particular (just using a few drops too much of an essential oil on my scalp made it itch like a mother f’er for a week until i did an overnight oil mask, to say nothing of the normal shampoos that make it go insane) and i’ve always been paranoid that box dye would demolish my precariously great hair.
i mention this because this dye process is similar to my normal hair care routine (acid wash tempered by lots and lots and lots of oils that i leave on my hair for awhile), and i completely ignored box directions due to that, which worked out super well for me. i leave it on for about an hour instead of the prescribed 25 minutes (which doesn’t even faze my hair, let alone dry it out or damage it in the slightest), and come out the other side with deeply cleansed hair in a lovely black. i forego the conditioner they pack with it and instead do an oil mask for about an hour right afterwards, which guarantees my hair won’t fuss or complain.
some caveats:
– i obviously have no idea how it works out for other hair profiles. considering some people’s hair comes out lush and hydrated, while others go crazynuts, i’d say this formulation is probably much kinder to people with naturally oily hair. i imagine normal hair could get away with minimal damage with some prep (don’t shampoo a couple days beforehand, and definitely don’t use a deep cleanse shampoo). if you have dry or fragile hair, the amount of prep you’d need to do probably isn’t worth it.
– if you have hair longer than a pixie cut, you’re going to need two boxes. i thought i could get away with one box the first time because i wasn’t making a dramatic change in shades; i was wrong. i had to go back for a second with a real sad-ass dye job hidden in a ballerina bun and do it again. without touch-ups, the color lasts three months, but if i go that long i need two boxes again. one box every six weeks is an optimal schedule for me.
positives:
– doesn’t obliterate my spoiled primadonna hair.
– smells about the best a hair dye can smell.
– great color, distributes evenly among my grey hairs, and looks good even as it fades over the months. soft black is a complex black and looks so natural that everyone in my life was confused as to whether or not i had actually dyed my hair or if they were just misremembering.
– $3 less per box than garnier olia, its main ammonia-free rival in the price bracket. on my dye schedule, i’ll go through $45/year with revlon, vs $72/year if i’d gone with garnier. it adds up!
edit 9/7/2016: i’ve been using this dye for almost two years now and i still love it, except. EXCEPT. they discontinued my shade (soft black). i now have to use the regular black, which is neutral-toned, and it caused me quite a fuss when it turned blue-black over the old warm black, somehow. aside from color woes, the formulation still does incredible things to my hair, and the color itself clung on magnificently in the 6 (!) months i was too lazy to do touch-ups. i am so in love with this line that i would rather make a different color work than jump to another line with a better color that my hair loves a little less.
i’ve also since changed up the way i handle this dye now, and no longer do an oil mask afterwards. a brief acid rinse (1 tbsp vinegar per 8oz water) that i hold on my hair for 5 minutes followed by my normal conditioner is more than enough to make my hair happy, and i get better results with the color when i’m not immediately following the dye with a low pH shampoo to get the oil mask out.
