I purchased both the Extreme silver coloring conditioner (tub) and the daily conditioner (small bottle). Both are 8oz, so the tub is $29 and the daily is $18. That tells you a bit about the potency of each. I have light/med brown hair with a demarcation line coming in with very ash brown salt/pepper grays. I like true ash brown hair, and my hair fades a lot from washing and sun, so I color my ends just to get rid of brassiness. This product was right up my alley, being that I have my grays coming in enough where I know if I try to keep using normal peroxide dye, Im going to reach that point where you have a really bad/noticable demarcation line. Im not there yet, so I want to stop while Im ahead. A color depositing product seems better to me to help fade the line, while keep brass at bay. This works great—- IF you like true green toned ash. I read several reviews where folks had blonde that turned green. This does fade in that direction but since I have mostly brown tones, it works exactly how I like my ash to be. My most fav hair dye that was discontinued ages ago was Loreals True Match light ash brown— and it was amazing. It also had strong green tones. So i like that, but be aware.
The formula is thick, dark purple, and doesn’t make much of a mess. Ive been hair coloring for years, so unless you’ve never dealt with dye, you should have no issues. It didn’t stain my skin, but if you bump your skin and wipe it off right away, you’ll be fine. Same for your sink or tub, if you get some on it, rinse it right away. The longer you let it sit, then it stains (duh). The tub conditioner I used gloves, but for using the daily in the shower, I didn’t need gloves and it didn’t stain my hands at all.
It has a minty smell, which didn’t bother me. No peroxide smell. Since it is a conditioner that deposits, its very thick, and I read some folks had issues with it being patchy. This wont apply to your hair like most runnier hair dyes, so you have to really massage the color into your hair as you apply, because its so thick. You cant just paint this on. Its too thick. I really rubbed it into my hair, and had no issues. It also has a lot of comedogenic ingredients ( Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Organic Shea) Butter, Simmondsia Chinensis (Organic Jojoba) Seed Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Linum Usitatissiumum (Organic Linseed) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil) that can cause issues for skin (like if you got it on your face) but since it rinses out, I had no issues. I have sensitive skin to those oils. However, because of those oils, this is a very moisturizing product, and I found it weighed my hair down and made it feel grimey. I have dry hair, but also long fine hair, so heavy products tend to do that. But if you don’t mind the rich oils, you’ll probably like the extra moisture.
The overall result of buying the daily vs. the color tub is potency. I found that the tub dyed much stronger, and does last and stain/tint your hair longer, but the daily conditioner isn’t near as potent. I tried the daily both in the shower wet, and before, dry, just to see if it would work as well as the tub version but for cheaper. It doesn’t. I applied the tub version on dry hair like instructed for only 15 min the first time and it was potent and amazing. Very silver ashy. Wont turn grey silver unless you have blonde highlights or blonde hair but on my brown hair with brass it turned it beautiful golden brown silver with a tinge of green. I love it. No brass. My greys/roots weren’t colored at all, so this wont color greys grey/silver, but for merging a salt/pepper demarcation line, it worked well. FYI I find that I loose a ton of hair when having to apply dye products on my dry hair vs wet, just something to be aware of.
It does come off a bit on your towel if you towel dry (only the first time rinse though, not after that) but I bleach my towels so it doesn’t bother me. Doesn’t come off on your pillowcase (like some color depositing products can) or come off on your skin. I have long hair, down to my chest, and on first application, used almost half of the tub. The daily I use less because my hair is wet but need like three squirts of it. Its not that big of a bottle. Now that i know the tub is more potent, i plan to use less of it but just go in on my top parts that fade first and just use a little to refresh (and not saturate every strand like I did the first go.)
I will repuchase but plan to only buy the tub conditioner since its more potent. Shipping took 1 week so I’ll probably buy more than one to have on hand. I think the daily conditioner can be skipped.
TL;DR— i think these dyes are great as long as you go in knowing what you want and your hair color vs. what can be done. I knew I wouldn’t get silver silver hair but wanted some ash to blend my grays with the rest of my hair and it did just that. I also like the non-peroxide dye to help get all gray until my roots take over more. As for how long it lasts, it does overall stain your hair, and I dyed mine 2 weeks ago. I wash my hair daily too. So I think it lasts awhile. My hair isn’t near as brassy as it was before dyeing and because it does stain, i hope it keeps the brass permanently at bay.
