I used this Revlon Colorsilk #30 Dark Brown to cover small areas of gray. I did do some research on a few blogs and websites beforehand to see which permanent drugstore colors covered gray the best.
This one came up a lot, among a few others. Nice and Easy Root Touch up came up a lot too, though the price was nearly double for half the amount of product. Also the development time on that one is only 10-15 minutes vs 25 to 30 minutes for this product. I ended up going with the Colorsilk just because I had the time and figured maybe (??) the longer development time would equal longer-lasting results. I have nothing to prove otherwise, and would definitely try the Nice and Easy Root touch up if I were pressed for time.
I appreciate that this came in a one-to-one ratio and in liquid form for both color and developer (you get 2 oz of each). That makes it a lot easier to mix small amounts with a plastic tablespoon in a bowl for my needs, rather than wrestling the correct amount out of those metal tubes of color. I suppose the only downside of the liquid is if you wanted to do a Balayage technique. The formula does thicken up a little bit when mixed but is still MUCH MORE RUNNY than the cream would be. I didn’t take the proper precautions with a tarp and ended up staining my walls and door a little bit. Because it’s so rinny, I might think twice about repurchasing, despite the obvious advantages when you need to mix tinier portions.
The price ($4.50 in store, $3 online) was so much cheaper than the other brands, I was a little bit suspicious. The difference I can see between this and a more expensive box is the gloves are just the standard peel off, thin plastic type and the conditioner comes a little packet as opposed to a generous tube. But I don’t care about the gloves or the conditioner so long as the formula works well.I will update if any weirdness happens over the next few weeks as far as the color changing.
The only other thing I have to note is this is an ammonia free formula. I thought that would translate to less odor but I rinsed and conditioned for 5-10 minutes and could still smell it after my hair dried. I then decided to lightly wash the parts that I had colored with a gentle shampoo (even though you’re not supposed to do that) just to get the smell out. Didn’t seem to affect the color, just thought I’d note it.
It’s only day two and I did even wash my hair a little but so far so good. It did cover the gray (i processed for 30 min.) and doesn’t look too reddish or black– it’s pretty much just a neutral dark brown so far. (True black hair is pretty rare so please note that this is very dark brown. My hair, for instance, looks black from a short distance but is really dark brown. If you have medium brown hair and color with this, it might seem to come out black, in comparison. Having said that, I have actually colored in the past a couple times with shades that are called “dark brown” and end up looking very inky-blue-ish-black and unnatural. If you’re going for dramatic that’s great, but if you’re trying to match a natural dark brown hair color it’s less so. That’s why I was pleased with this color).
Update ( 1 month later): So after a few washes I did notice some subtle red tones and the deep brown pigment that had initially seemed to cover my grey areas lifted off somewhat. I guess this is typical, so, not surprising. Still did not work as well as the Feria (or whatever it was, I wish I could remember) I used to cover grey a couple years ago. I’m very happy to report least it’s not too orange or brassy. I will probably use up the rest of this, then try another brand/line.

This product surpassed all my expectations. I thought ammonia free color didn’t work (wrong), that I had to pay a lot for an excellent product (wrong) that salon color was superior (wrong). I decided to try this product when I saw that 88% would buy it again. That’s the highest I’ve seen of any rating. A review from a professional hair stylist cinched the deal. I’ve colored by hair every two weeks for about 10 years now, and since using this product last fall I’m saving $210 a month and my hair looks great. Not looking back, and I’ve got some tips to share to avoid a “too dark” outcome.
I’ve been saving I have been coloring my hair since my early twenties (three decades now). I started going grey/white when a white streak formed at my right temple. Been having salons color my hair for twenty years. So I’ve spent a fortune. This color is rich, natural looking. It’s the perfect shade of dark cool brown (my original natural color). My skin is fair with an olive undertone, and this is my HG color.
To avoid an application that is too dark, I start in the back of my head (which is where hair is darker anyway). Learning to apply on my own head was easier than I expected, and I get better every time. Got a smock, mixing bowl, brushes. All set. It takes me about 20 minutes to apply to my whole head, back to front, sectioning my hair in quarters and working each one – right back, left back, left front, right front. So to avoid a too dark result, my first recommendation is start in the back. I let the color sit for 25 minutes after I’ve finished applying to my whole head. The front gets the full development time, and the back being a bit darker is no big deal. The condition of my hair is great. I use a Bumble and Bumble dark brown hair powder if I miss a spot, which happens, but is happening less as I get better at this.
Second tip to avoid a too dark outcome – wash your hair with a high quality shampoo and condition after you color. I love Living Proof products because I live in Florida, the humidity is super high here, and Living Proof products get my hair smooth and frizz free. Some reviewers here talk about how the color looks great after you wash it. My advice – don’t wait to wash it and you’ll be good from the start. Washing after I color takes out a bit of the color so I get the desired result right away. I do use the conditioning packet provided with the color after I rinse out the color, wait a little bit (read the paper, write a review 😉 then do my usual Living Proof wash, condition and style.
My hair grows quickly and is more silver/white than brown now, so I touch up the regrowth every two weeks. I do use practically all the product to cover my roots. Every 8-12 weeks I’ll work it through to the ends if I think the overall color needs a refresh. I’ve had zero skin reaction.
The reason I looked for an alternative? My colorist went crazy with highlights. I asked for a smattering of caramel and she gave me 50% ash blonde in one fell swoop – which was hugely damaging and exactly what I didn’t want. I went to a different colorist afterwards who used Kevin Murphy products, but the coverage was inadequate. So I started researching on Makeup Alley and decided to give Revlon Colorsilk Dark Brown 30 a go.
All told, this process take me about 1.5 – 2 hours from beginning to end (dry, styled hair). That is easily how much time I spent getting to the salon, sitting in the chair for color and blow dry, and leaving. I am saving a ton of money and my hair looks just as good, even better than before. I’m very willing to pay for a superior result, but realize now how much $$$ I could have been saving, with zero sacrifice in quality results. I have naturally dark blonde hair that I dyed dark brown. I have a pixie cut, and every 4-5 weeks I get it cut and dye it with Colorsilk. I have used Colorsilk for at least 12 years, but most consistently in the past 4. It doesn’t have ammonia in it so it doesn’t smell as bad as permanent dyes. This is more demi permanent. It doesn’t drip too bad. The gloves go on fine with a bit of baby powder, they seem a bit better than they used to be. Every time I’ve tried another (always more expensive) dye I have regretted it. I should buy this by the pallet.

So when I removed the dangling straps of my long necklift clippers my hair was with the greasy mess that hit it from re-washing it. When I wash my hair I flush the spongy mess down in a sieve so nothing sticks out. So no amount of berry color would cure this problem, but for the little old mama, it will give her something like pigmentation it didn’t before. I usually use brand A bleach and no more. My head fogged up the back of my head and it made my hair look muddy. I loved this product, but it has been recommended to me by many ladies. I now use deodorant every day, not detergent. After wash out and re-dye my hair I’m very satisfied! It doesn’t mess me up, keeps hair at bay and gets to work on my natural red hair. Just keep going back to bleaching as if you didn’t pay attention because it’ll leave quite a mess.

Tons of other great, healthier deodorants – it gives her things she doesn’t like. It breaks down hair down to what she needs when she needs them most. I love this hair color! I have been coloring my hair various shades of red and wanted to go back to my natural color. This color accomplished exactly that! It covered my grays flawlessly and did not turn my hair black which many box colors tend to do. My grays were exactly the color of my natural hair and were not too light or too dark. I’ve used Color Silk on and off for more than 15 years, and have always been pleased with it. I used it again a couple of weeks ago, and it dried out my hair terribly. Weird. I’m now afraid to use the box I have in reserve.

This was my first time ever dying my hair or using hair dye and I was very pleased! I actually have some hair extensions that do not match my natural color so that is what i used the dye on. My hair is not jet black, but it is darker than a normal brown so I had trouble choosing between dark brown and brown black. I went with dark brown and I am SO glad I did!
When I was putting it all over the hair, I got some on the sink and as it dried, it turned my sink a nice brown color, it was really cool to me! I let it sit for 25 minutes as instructed and then I washed it out. It felt AMAZING! It was so soft and I was so confused because I assumed hair dye would make my hair course and a little damaged. The color ran clear but as kept running water on it, I always got a little brown. It was always: clear, clear, clear, brown, clear, brown, etc. So i just stopped and used the conditioner.
I can definitely see why people were wondering where you could buy this stuff separately. It smells soooo good! I kinda wished I had a little more to go in and wash my own hair with! But afterwards, I washed it out and my hair (extensions) and so dark and beautiful! I love the dark look and im so glad it will fade into a beautiful but still dark brown over time!
Will most definitely dye again with this brand and color! Kinda trying to find something else can dye just so I can buy some more in a different color lol!

Seeing so many reviews that need clarification. First, never expect your color to look like the box. That model doesn’t have your hair. It’s just a guideline. Second, there is enough product in the kit to do medium length hair just fine. If your hair is shorter than that and you don’t have enough product I’m not sure what to say. Third, it’s imperative that you always add water and lather color before rinsing. Color is shampoo based, so if your hair is sticky or gummy after rinsing, either rinse again or consider the health of your hair before coloring. And finally, consider your own tones and color processes before using a box dye kit. It’s not always just buying the color and applying. It really is a science and you have to have some working knowledge of how color works.
I am a natural brunette who had gone blonde for over a year to combat resistant grays. It was just easier. But I got tired of being blonde and wanted to go darker again. I also knew that I’d have to add pigments back into my hair so it didn’t take an odd turn into orange or green. Knowing that, I started on a Friday by using Colosilk in Medium Golden Brown. I knew it wouldn’t turn out the actual shade considering my platinum blonde starting point. It came out a medium auburn, which is what I wanted (using an ash color would have added blue/green tones and that would have been bad. Golden added red/orange, which I needed to deposit). I needed to add a red to the blonde as a starting point so my next step wasn’t too red or God forbid, green. I then purchased Colorsilk Dark Brown the next day (being a neutral shade meant an equal amount of red and blue/green base colors). I applied it and it came out dark brown. Very little red tones, and not green at all. It was exactly the color I wanted.
It’s been three weeks since I did this. I condition every day but don’t shampoo daily. The color has lightened just a fair amount, still in the dark brown family. The red tones my hair naturally reveal are still minimal. And my 50% gray? Those have kept their color as well. The only gray showing is the growth at the root. I’m amazed and beyond happy. I already knew Colorsilk is one of the best box dyes on the market. It has never disappointed me. And the price cannot be beat. To do my root touch up, it is still cheaper to buy this and apply with a brush than to buy a touch up kit at three times the price.
If you want to color your hair, give Colorsilk a try. It’s worth every penny and out performs other colors hands down. I’m 47 and have been coloring my hair for 35 years. I also went to beauty school and that working knowledge of how color works and the color wheel is helpful. Do your homework and look your questions up before you blame a good product for your own mistakes. Color is something to have fun with. One last thing–for all those experts who day dark brown hair on women over 40 is too harsh need to stop. I have never been this in love with my hair color, not even when I was a blonde. Medium brown is boring. Dark brown stands out. And it’s amazing!

I love that this dye does not contain ammonia and is so cheap! Those were the main draws. It was easy to apply and it comes with a really nice conditioner packet. The results were very dark, almost like a soft black color at first. But now, after three weeks, it has lightened up a bit to more of a very dark brown. It’s still pretty dark though. Colorsilk seems to resist fading better than other brands I’ve tried in the past. This was a great purchase, I’m very happy with the results! I would probably not ever buy a Garnier or L’Oreal dye again, now that I’ve used Colorsilk.

I used Revlon ColorSilk in Dark Brown on short my brown/black hair w/ about 10% dye resistant grays 6 days ago. It was $3+change including tax @ my local Target.
First off, the color was much darker than I expected. I thought I’d pretty much have my original color w/ the grays coming out a dark brown. What I got was a monochromatic black/brown head of hair after following Revlon’s directions for covering stubborn gray.
At least the dye successfully covered my stubborn grays and the color seems to be mellowing out a little bit. I didn’t shampoo for 24 hours but still had a little dye bleed onto my towels after shampooing on days 3 & 4.
Though the smell was okay, the dye really roughed up my hair cuticles & dried it out. Wet my hair was a tangled mess. The included conditioner only helped a tiny bit. However, after drying, my hair was reasonably soft and shiny.
One box was enough for my short hair w/ just a tiny bit to spare so if you have shoulder length hair or longer, get 2 boxes or more.
Pros:
1) Covers stubborn grays.
2) Cheap.
3) Smells okay.
Cons:
1) Dries out your hair.
2) Box claims multi-dimensional color, but I got a monochromatic result.
3) Color comes out darker than expected.
4) May need to get 2 or more boxes for hair any longer than a pixie cut. (ex. Anne Hathaway’s short hair @ her wedding)
