A chypre leaning toward old-school chpres though not as opulent, well-blended or complex to my nose. The Rosine website says this is to be worn with fur and silk, which gives me the impression that we are after that Chanel feel here – for some reason I’m thinking of No.5 and Coco Madem.oiselle. And Une Folie de Rose may give you that during the drydown, although I think it has a more retro or whimsical feel. And it is more spicy than dusty.
I get a peppery opening with a woodsy aspect. On some days, I get some patchouli and sometimes sweeter notes, too. This is a more natural patch than I often like and it’s earthy aspect is more like humid, dark soil on me. It’s more dark and thin than full-bodied.
The rose is a sweet, full-bodied one which I like more than sheer, pink roses. And the drydown is interesting. I get that Guerlain powder together with the dark earthy aspect. Then it becomes a rose.
When I wore it, I got complimented by perfume lovers, but from a distance. On my skin, though, I keep on smelling wet soil and something like saffron or cumin, which feels too much. This probably smells better on others. Hence, one extra lippie. Tauer’s Une Rose Chypree works much better on me than this one, giving me a better-blended composition.

I absolutely adore this deep, complicated earthy rose fragrance. It is is stiff competition with my HG perfume that I have been wearing for years, L’Artisan’s Voleur de Roses. Un Folie de Roses has amazing staying power. A little dab of this is all it takes. It smells utterly divine, a unique and rare combination of feminine soft rose petals juxtaposed with deep masculine earthy notes. This is a more mature velvet sensual rose, rather than a sweet innocent young rose. The scent of this is so layered, nuanced, and multifaceted, I continue to become more in love with it the longer I wear it. I can sense that a lot of time, effort, and attention to detail has gone into this fragrance because it is so compelling! I just can’t say enough about this perfume. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

This has a lot of personality (in a good way). Nice sharp, spicy rose with green overtones and quite a bit of patchouli. For those who are put off by the sharpness, dabbing, rather than spraying, softens this.

Clearly this is a scent that provokes a strong reaction! I love the greenness in the top notes–fresh and sharp and chypre-y. The dry-down is lush and dark and spicy on me–not a little girl rose, but a tougher, smarter, wiser rose. I wouldn’t describe it as pretty–more like intriguing. It’s the kind of rose that would match you drink for drink, pour you into a cab, and then take a long walk home by herself.

Lovely rose incense dries to a fair, clear rose without a lot of features. Nothing wrong with it, but not for me.

Total scrubber on me. At first I thought I’d like this, but there is a heavy, lingering afterscent that is just intolerable…. I don’t know what that is, but it’s oily, and toooo much. Nauseating.

Update: this is an aldehyde rose. The openning is a sharp and cold to my taste but it settles after half an hour. There may be some mossy woods lingering in the background but it’s not a typical chypre to in my opionon.

I am really surprised that the ratings for Une Folie are not higher than they are. This is a beautiful, sexy scent. Lately I have really fallen for chypres, and this is a great one. It has the classic oakmoss-iness, but the rose gives it a more sophisiticated, womanly feel. And this is a dark rose, by the way; I can’t imagine anyone would describe this as an “old lady” rose as they often seem to do. The sillage is great as is the lasting power. If you’re expecting a straightforward rose, this may not be for you, but if you like chypres and deep rose scents, this is definitely a must-try.

My search for a dark rose scent has finally ended. Folie de Rose is simply divine, from start to finish. It manages to be rich, but never stale or overpowering. That being said, as with most rose-based scents, it should be applied judiciously. This perfume has a freshness to it, probably due to the bergamot it contains, but as mentioned below, it is not a chipper scent (for that, try Rosine’s Zest D’Une Rose). I picture Barbara Stanwyck in “Sorry, Wrong Number” wearing this one.
Top Notes: Bergamot & coriander
Heart Notes: Ylang-ylang, tea rose, bulgarian rose, jasmine & iris
Base Notes: Sandalwood, oakmoss, vetiver & patchouli
