This is one of the fragrances I’ve been wanting to try for a while.
I’ve not tried many scents before any formulation change took place, so all I know is what I can get now. I’m probably more content that way compared to those who know differently and experienced the vintage formulas.
This scent smells fresh, youthful, uplifting and almost cherry like but not in an edible way. A truly lovely fragrance. When I smell this I think of newness, like a new gift, something new and exciting.

I found the product in the new packaging was less fragrant and am really disappointed. But I found a website that is selling the original product. I would buy the older one.

There seems to be a lot of secrecy surrounding Lauder’s revamping of their classics into similar bottles (ala Jo Malone). I was curious to see if they had been reformulated, which I was sure they had been, and also how bad the reformulations would be.
Numerous times I went to inquire and they would pull out an old bottle of the classic Spellbound. I would say that I wanted to smell the new one, and they wouldn’t show it to me. One day I finally just grabbed the bottle on display to just spray it, to see the reformulation.
What a pale comparison. There was hardly any similarity, this new version in the square non descript bottle that simply just says Spellbound, smells nothing like the classic did! Just a watered down musky air freshner. Estee Lauder is probably spinning in her grave at what has been done to the classic scents.
The older Spellbound was very Dior Poison like in that it was a bomb, and interesting and complex. This is not.

This is a review of vintage Spellbound extrait, NOT the light greenish liquid above. The reviews below make me determined not to purchase the current rendition depicted above or any newer bottle with much lighter liquid with a black and gold top. According to Fragrantica, notes include orange blossom, daffodil, Carnation, cardamom, rose, citrus, apricot. Also sandalwood, vetiver, vanilla clove and amber, opoponax, benzoin. Spellbound was released in 1991. This fragrance needs to be dabbed in moderation, not sprayed.
I have a mini perfume extrait, crystal glass square bottle with a rectangular gold stopper, the liquid a warm glowing golden. I have also just purchased a new old stock 50 ml of relatively vintage extrait, square squat crystal bottle, black stopper, short ingredient list, liquid a deeper amber, with reddish tones ( SD alcohol, water, fragrance). It’s lovely, similar spicy clove carnation as mitsouko (but, unlike Mitsouko, no chypre mossy tone; and the clove amber dry down of Spellbound is on the sweet side). Just enough floral to give a lift to the spice, but not enough to make it distinctly floral. Well rounded. Not at all musty or old fashioned. Fast evolution into a linear dry down, no surprises. Reasonably priced in a new old stock miniature assortment coffret, 25 usd for five miniature bottles of extrait in squat bottles with stoppers: private collection, knowing, spellbound, white linen, and Beautiful. Variable reasonable prices for the 50 ml bottle on line. Individual vintage miniatures of spellbound extrait are also plentiful ranging from 5-15 usd on line.
Note: I am very fond of the spicy carnation (Eugenol) note and also wear: Lorenzo Villarosi Garafano (recently discontinued, soapier, less sweet rose carnation geranium); mitsouko vintage Parfum de toilette and in modern 2013 extrait; vintage Roger et Gallet oiellet Bleue; and a tiny bit of Floris Malmaison; and, vintage Caron Bellodgia extrait and discontinued EdP.
Vintage Spellbound might even satisfy my craving for the significantly more expensive JAR Diamond water (I think LV garafano is closer to JAR Golconda) which is high praise. Supposedly a Spellbound is like the predecessor Avon Topaze.
This could be is a unisex fragrance in its original extrait incarnation. If you are a man who would wear mitsouko or Hermes Equipage, and don’t mind a straightforward, sweet spicy fragrance — almost a clove carnation soliflore — (or who would layer it with MKK or Ambre Sultan for more depth) this is a fragrance to consider. If you are a man who wears Lutens, you are probably not adverse to sweet unisex fragrances anyway.

There is something in this (or at least they way it smells on my skin) that I just can’t deal with. The first hour on my skin lsmells like some sort of chemical you might find at a funeral home. It literally smells like I am trying to cover up something horrible with something even worse. And I only used a tiny spritz.
I am not one to throw around phrases like “smells like cat pee” or “old lady perfume” just because I don’t like a scent., I love many old, spicy, oriental frags that get bashed for being “cheap” “too strong”, “dated”, etc.
After an hour or so, this is very…incense-like. Like flowers and incense with powdery musk I guess.No notes stand out more than another.. I don’t get any spice though. I can see how people may love this, it isn’t totally awful. Too bad it takes so long to develop into something nice on my skin, back to Macy’s it went.

This is one of my most favourite fragrances of a time however I could never wear it myself I had the big 100ml when I was 18, Whenever I wore it I got “why does it smell like the dentist in here” or “have you been to the dentist” its the cloves in it – sadly they overshadow all other notes on my skin I had the same thing with KL.. until now that is… I recently purchased a vintage bottle of the eau de parfum and the parfum and surprising this is now different on my skin, perhaps its an age thing, maybe I was wearing too much previously or I had a newer batch but this is now totally different on my chemistry warm, slightly spicy a bit cool too (like Knowing another hot/cold fragrance) perhaps I had to age a bit to be able to wear it now almost a decade later it seems to work on me my chemistry is now no longer getting along with the florals I used to wear and I seem to suit the heavier spicier orientals a-la Opium, White Diamonds, Obsession etc. I would like to give KL another go as I reckon it might wear well on me now also.

Nice clove smell unique, fragrence doesn’t change as it drys down.. This I like about Lauder frgrence.. the smell doesn’t change as it fades, just gets lighter
I would buy this if it weren’t for the 55 and up price tag.

I like this product a lot, I used to always alternate between blush on my cheeks for work and bronzer when going out for the night. I never found that middle ground.
Well, here it is! I love love the colour, beautiful.. A quick swish in the morning and my cheekbones look amazing.. When I’m going out for the night a bit more then work amount on my cheeks, and a light dusting on my nose, forehead and jawline.
I do agree though, if you use to much, or don’t blend your cheeks well if you’ve decided to use more you will look like a glitter bomb has gone off on you..Just remember, a little goes a long way.
Price is a bit steep, but if you intend to use it as much as I do, it’s worth it.
100% buying again, this is an everyday product I cannot do without.

As beautiful as this is, and as much as I wanted it, I tried it out and have to say I absolutely dislike it even though I’m a highlighter junkie.
Glitter is chunky, obvious, fallout-y (on your face? even worse) and the texture is gritty, not as soft as I thought. Color is very pretty but only in pan 🙁 I wish I could like this but I’m not picking one up for myself. Please don’t be sucked into the display/swatches online. It’s juvenile for how it looks.

I was skeptical about purchasing the highlighter due to the price. I have a ton of MAC MSF’s that are similar to this, and I just wasnt too sure if I would want another item so similar to others that I already have.
I am an NC42 in MAC and this just looks so stunning. It gives you just the right amount of highlight/shimmer and a little goes a very long way. There is so much product that I really dont think I will ever use all of it.
I apply it with my Sigma F25 or F35 just depending upon what parts of my face I want to highlight and how much I want to highlight. It gives your face the fresh/refreshed look.
I highly recommend this and am so glad I purchased it!

I’m a bit surprised by some of these comments. Has nobody ever heard of the fact that fragrances smell different when they react to the oils on different skins?
I am one of those people who get regular unasked for compliments (one just the other day from a guy half my age) about my perfume and I can tell you that, on me, it smells absolutely nothing like Poison or Tabu as has been suggested. In fact Tabu is my mother’s favourite fragrance and yet I find it repulsive, far too strong and artificial compared to Spellbound. I also don’t like Poison’s sickly sweetness and I’ve had other people who say they hate Poison who have complimented me on my perfume.
The only complaint I have about SB is that, because it’s quite rare, it’s never on promotion or comes in a Gift set. Because of that, for a while I used other cheaper perfumes – until my teenage children complained that I didn’t ‘smell like me’ anymore. I only wish I could find a similar smelling fragrance that was more affordable but so far I haven’t come across anything that smells like SB – not on me, anyway.
Obviously it’s one of those scents that doesn’t suit everyone so I would recommend trying a sample for a few hours but I hope no one is put off by the ‘it smells like —‘ comments because it doesn’t, not to everyone. To me, and those that smell it on me (I’m told), it smells warm, rich and sensual – intense yet soft and subtle at the same time. Clearly though, on some peoples skin it has a different effect but I think, and this is probably true of most perfumes, this has much more to do with the wearer than the perfume itself

This is by far one of my favorite fragrances. I love almost all EL scents with the exception of Pleasures. This perfume is very strong with a rich oriental scent. I do agree with the other reviewers that one would need to go lightly with this one. It has a strong lasting power and if you accidentally spray it in your clothes you will need to wash them or it may over power your fragrance off the day. I have received lots of compliments while wearing this and this is my second bottle so I know I would re buy it if I ran out again.

This is absolutely one of my favorite fragrances in the world!
Back in 2004, I was in my early twenties and was a counter manager for Estee Lauder. Of course, all of my friends were ooo-ing and ahhh-ing over “younger” fragrances, such as Escada, Be Delicious, etc., and Spellbound is considered not new and was considered an “older” person fragrance. So, I would secretly go spray myself with some Spellbound and would be smelling my wrists all day and getting compliments from men and women alike!
Now, I am in my early 30s… I know what smells good, and I don’t need to wear what everyone is wearing! This is my main fall fragrance. My nose smells a hint of a sweet orange, clove, cinnamon, and vanilla; I personally think it is a spicy gourmand.
I could just imagine a alluring French woman in Moulin Rouge wearing this… Vintage and very sexy. 🙂
