Bond No.9 has always been a hit or miss on my skin. This one is a success I think as I get a lot of compliments from friends whenever I wear it. Unfortunately, I don’t find it exciting enough to warrant a full bottle and ‘yummy’ – though nice- is not how I wish to be remembered for the rest of my life, especially at this price range.
So New York is politely yummy on my skin. It is more mellow, calmer and rounded than my other yummy scents but also less cozy. I get all the well-known Angel elements from it and even that A*men Pure Coffee structure. However, while A*men was a 100 in its strength, So New York is a 5.
Although known as a coffee scent – as it is what it is- I feel I find its opening more interesting. The mirabelle plums here are not jammy or sticky. They are light, sweet but airy – with a clean patch supporting the lightness I think. Just the right amount on my skin, or it would be a mess.
My favorite bit about so New York is the powder smell I get from it. It doesn’t suffocate the coffee but it is very clearly there and it is a clean powder which I think adds a bit of interest to the story.
Altogether, a pleasant fragrance but I don’t miss it badly when I don’t wear it for a while.

I have a problem with Bond No. 9. Well, no, I have a few problems. First, they started the supersonic price boom thing, initially claiming Bond 9 purchases were an investment because Bond would send customers samps of new frags for life.
That didn’t last past a year or two.
Second, the frags just do not justify the pricing or hype. Frankly, I’m more than a bit suspicious that Bond’s founder shopped some huge vats of accords, and has then forced her perfumers to continue recombining those accords: cheap new perfumer’s patch being first on the list; perfumer’s vanillin accord second. Third on the lists veers between bitey jasmine, a pleasant bergamot, and the BO-touched musk of Lovely. All these stock ingredients tend to be combined in vaguely different ways with tiny one-off other accords picked up on sale.
My theory started when I went to the store. I’d already found myself turning away from frag after frag because they seemed to all use a lot of that fairly recent perfumer patch accord (thin and sweet and nothing like the deep, resinous, aged real thing). But once in the store, it wasn’t just a handful, it was frag after frag with that patch base. There were a few exceptions, like Little Italy, but LI is just an amped up EDC and can’t possibly cost close to to make what it costs to buy.
So my issue with So New York? Well, first, Fragrantica doesn’t mention patch, nor does B9. But it’s DRENCHED in patch, the same old patch in so many other frags (Nuit de Noho, Bleeker, Central Park, etc). It’s nice, even pleasant (patch aside), but I really wish they’d spent the money on something, ANYTHING, other than same old patch. Doing this with a warm oak note? — that would have been interesting. Or the perfumer’s guiac, with something warm to soften the bite.
If B9 were going to recycle vats of the same accords, at least price accordingly? The concept seems to be the perfume house twist of old realtor saw, namely: Exterior shot, exterior shot, exterior shot. I think for this much money, a house should break new ground — and not mainly in pretty bottles and fluffy launches. When I look what Slumberhaus has done with a fraction of the money, or Tokyo Milk, or Andy Tauer… no, B9 annoys me so much I can hardly be fair to them. And really, So New York isn’t horrific, so maybe 3 lippies should be 3.5

Deep rich mocha. I love rich delicious gourmands the most, and a bottle of So New York is an absolute must in my collection. Bond No. 9 happens to carry some of the best gourmands around — unique blends like nothing you can find anywhere else.
It smells to me like cocoa & coffee w/ a plum note. Only slightly sweet and a bit powdery. Great for cold days, but I’ll spritz mine lightly & wear it any time, since it’s such a comforting scent — and it’s not really all that heavy. I can’t save this gem of a fragrance for cold weather only.

I really like this fragrance! I think it is a unique chocolate gourmand scent that smells yummy!! To me it is nothing like Angel..I don’t like Angel at all!.. but I really love So New York!!! 🙂

I smelled this a few years ago and remember liking it, so I decided to give it a whirl and swapped for it. The initial spray is lovely – a gourmand with delectable caramel and chocolate notes. As others have mentioned, it is similar to Angel in that respect. I love Angel, but there is a certain “mouthwash” note to it on me that is manly and slightly too astringent for me. Anyway, the initial notes of So New York is like a sweet Angel. However, once it dries down, and some time passes, all I smell is patchouli. There is none of that sweetness that I experienced initially. The sillage of this fragrance is poor compared to other Bond fragrances, too. Overall, I’ll probably tryto use up this giant bottle I swapped for, but will most likely not repurchase.

This starts off with awesome chocolate notes and then morphs into a very bitter marzipan. It stays quite bitter for awhile and then, suprisingly, patchouli-based milky and ambery espresso notes emerge. This is fun and not as heavy as I expected. Not a daily scent for me but most definitely an occasional fragrance to wear throughout the fall and winter!!

I love So New York. It smells like cocoa coffee and milk, and woven in between those two dominant scents is a ribbon of sweet plum and soft wooded florals. There is just something about those particular notes that makes So New York absolutely beautiful. My boss even said I smelled really good and she wanted to know what the perfume was. The more time I spend with So New York, the more I can detect the depth of the notes and appreciate and the overall combination of them. So New York is unlike any other perfume I’ve owned, so I splurged for the 50 ml. bottle and it is a yummy addition to my collection.

I happen to adore So New York and from the reviews here I guess it’s a love-it-or-hate-it, mostly. After the first spray I was like … hmm. Later I kept on noticing this plummy, nutty, milky-espresso haze rising up from my wrist and it totally brought back this fall day I spent in Chelsea (yes, NYC) waiting in a little cafe while my friend gave a piano lesson to the kid who lived around the corner. Weirdly, I don’t really get “chocolate” from So New York so much as the combination of notes giving a chocolaty vibe (though cocoa is indeed listed as one). This starts off with bergamot and plum and as it dries down I get the mix of espresso and that lovely creaminess from the “milk accord.” This scent is in no way overly sweet or foody — it manages to sidestep that in a sophisticated way. Yes, it is gourmand, but not in the way Chocolovers is, and it is nowhere near as sweet as any of the CSP frags. I find this really elegant, and best in fall and winter. I noticed some reviews mentioned citrus — I don’t get citrus from this at all. So far I’ve been making do with bon bons but I have no doubt this is FBW for me.

I used a vial of this and tried it in the store a couple of times. I even got one in a swap. I wanted to like this, but it kept smelling different on me. Sometimes there was a milky chocolate and I’d like. But most times, it would get a flower smell that just didn’t mesh with me. I wound up swapping it out. New Haarlem is my favorite scent and it’s much more sophisticated than this. I feel that So New York is borrowing aspects of Angel, but I just don’t get the same depth or consistency.
I have to say that I love these bottles. The shape is so cool and the Periwinkle circle on this is such a pretty color.

I liked the wonderfully sweet drydown of So New York, but there was a briefly bitter top note upon application that that did me in. I rarely get headaches from fragrance, but for some reason this brought one on. I tried again the next morning, same result.
The drydown was a sweet, mildly fruity patchouli, with a hint of chocolate. Sad to have to pass on this one for now, I might revisit in the future.
