Notes from Fragrantica: bergamot, clementine, juniper, red berries CO2, mint, currant buds CO2, violet leaf absolute, green leaves and aldehydes, daffodil, hyacinth, cyclamen, ylang-ylang, hawthorn, wisteria, beeswax, styrax resin, vanilla, benzoin, musk, amber and blond wood.
This is quite literally Spring in a bottle. What a gorgeous smooth floral blend—classy, timeless, ageless and honestly perfect for all seasons, but I really love it in Spring and Summer when the sun is out, as it’s just a happy fragrance overall. The daffodils are blooming right now in the Pacific Northwest (we are gearing up for Tulip season, and the precursor to the tulips are the daffodils in the fields) and this fragrance is a bouquet of warm sunny daffodils with freshly cut bitter green stems, and one heady sprig of hyacinth to round it out. Sadly discontinued, but well worth hunting down.

Same creamy note that appeared in Amarathine. I miss both of them and wait hopefully for it to turn up in another Pen scent. They always seem to d/c the best ones. I’ll never forgive them for killing off Violetta. Can’t buy again but I would in a heartbeat.

This one is really creamy and a little green at the same time, which is something I’ve never seen in combination in any other fragrances on the market – it was sold to me as a spring/summer perfume, but there’s a warmth to it that means it works nicely as a winter perfume too. If sunshine had a smell, this would be it (rather fitting that it comes from yellow flowers).
edit: I just found Ostara has been discontinued, probably in favour of Alizarin, Penhaligon’s 2016 launch. It was a great perfume while it was on the shelves though.

The daffodil note is very strong and true. Pollen, powder, green and a bit of dirt. It clashes somewhat with a honey note, but maybe it’s this contrast that makes the daffodil stand out more. I want to say there is lily in the valley in there but I might be imagining it. It has an airiness to it. It’s not narcisse noir or Je Reviens, it’s more floral and a lot less animal than that. It’s not a purely spring scent, there is enough weight to make it winter appropriate. I have a lot of perfumes of all scent families and this doesn’t smell like any of the others. It’s certainly different.
It’s quite strong for a Penhaligon’s floral. I’ve only just sprayed it so don’t know how long it will last, but it seems to have enough power for at least four hours.
