Ok…of course, the bottle is adorable and that is of course what catches the eye first. The Nanette bottles are all just little works of whimsy and I love that.
I sprayed this on this morning and thought “oh. Uh. No.” It was so strange. The first burst was phenomenal…then the next 30 minutes was all grapefruity on me (must be the very tart lemon—grapefruit is kind of a cat pee note on me and this was ALMOST there)…and then the drydown is cedar and musk and I swear something to give it a kick of vetiver (not listed, but I get that woody crispness just like it). It has lasted 7 hours on me and is VERY likable. I’ll be keeping this one! I can get through 30 minutes of strange citrus (was it the lemon and the jasmine? maybe so)….to get to this drydown. 🙂

Poor Nanette. It seems like the three of her fragrances in the cute, hippyish bottles and packaging never quite took off. Shanghai Butterfly is another one of her girly fragrances that I never got around to reviewing. Well now that I have a bottle and went through a full day of wearing the fragrance I am finally going to review it. Shanghai Butterfly is a nice cold fragrance with crisp, juicy oranges, lemons, cedar, and green apple. I noticed the cedar with I first sprayed it on but that quickly wafted away. I’ve read some other reviews that says it smells like Light Blue. I agree wit that a little bit but the lemon is more pronounced in Shanghai Butterfly so it is a little masculine…just a tad though. It is not the most long lasting perfume and it is not going to create a huge wake of sillage in your path but Shanghai Butterly is sweet. Not a sweet like in a candy, syrup type of sweet but sweet as in nice. Just a sweet little fragrance.

I have to jump on the “this smells like D&G Light Blue but different” bandwagon. It does and it is. On me, it has what’s good about Light Blue plus a soapy, wood-like smell. It is a tad masculine, but a man couldn’t wear it without getting strange looks, IMO. More interesting than Light Blue and not as ubiquitous, and that’s what I like about it.

I really got this perfume for the mint green bottle and the cool box. I wasn’t sure what I expected this fragrance to smell like. When I first sprayed it on, I thought it smelled like Axe body spray for men. It smells very masculine to me. After 5 minutes or so, it turned into an oriental scent that reminded me of Elizabeth Arden Green Tea.

I like it. I was afraid it would smell too masculine after reading the reviews – and it does on me, for a couple of minutes. Then it goes through a minty phase, but within 10 minutes this perfume smells divine on me- it reminds me of a flowering apple tree =) This is a definite try before you buy. But then again, when you see the gift set dirt cheap at Marshalls it’s hard to resist – and I see it there quite often.

My roommate has D&G Light Blue and I smelled the two in comparison to each other. I’ve never understood the appeal of Light Blue, which seems rather flat and asexual to me. SB smells technically similar but with more warmth and complexity. It opens with some sharp green notes that remind me unpleasantly of chopped parsley (probably the carnation), but those dry down within minutes to a creamy green version of Light Blue. Still not particularly sensual, but less one-dimensional than LB. Not powerfully fruity (LB was a bit citrusier) despite listed top notes; I’d call it a green floral, and I don’t detect any rose or gardenia. Final judgment would be that Light Blue is a bit lighter and fruitier, Shanghai Butterfly is a bit more green and slightly masculine. I prefer SB. Lasting power is not great though.
Top notes are carnation, mandarin orange, green apple and lemon; middle notes are gardenia, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley and rose; base notes are sandalwood, cedar, white woods and musk.

I definitely smell the similarity to Light Blue. I also agree that Shanghai Butterfly is a more complex version of the perennial best seller. It’s a darkish and slightly spicy citrus. I thought I could smell a hint of incense but it’s not in the official notes. Maybe I’m influenced by the eastern name. At any rate, I enjoyed this fragrance, this is not at all what I expected from the girly frilly designs of Nanette Lepore.

Like so many others, I feel that this is similar-to-but-better-than D&G Light Blue. The little mint bottle with its tassel is so much prettier too! I saw this on a clearance table today, tried some on and liked it but did not buy it… but I may very well go back and get some before it’s gone. It’s a very lighthearted scent. The citrus topnotes sparkle, making the first impression of the scent refreshing and stimulating. It’s upbeat and clean and dries down to a nice light woodiness that lasts well on me. Would recommend this a million times over Light Blue! 3&1/2 lip.

Ok, I love this perfume. It is gorgeous to me; crisp, woodsy, exotic. Not heavy or too musky.
I was very intrigued cause I could SWEAR I caught the slightest smokey scent intermingled with the floral, sweet tones.
I love the scent, but would love it if I knew it stayed for more than an hour. I’m going to buy the lotion as well, see if layering helps.
Hopefully I don’t become one of those woman who is doused and perfume and can’t smell it—-but I don’t think that’s the case with this one.
Adorable bottle too.

This has been my HG fragrance for over a year with no sign of stopping. Bright, green, & floral- just what I like. I get the many comparisons to D&G’s Light Blue, when I was scent-hunting, I took home a sample of Shanghai Butterfly & Light Blue for final decision by my DH. Light Blue went completely sour on me & that settled the debate.
