There’s something about this one. I am attracted to scents that have a certain fringe-y backstory. It was created in 1992 by a (male) Russian fashion designer named Slava Zaitsev. The bottle is its own thing. It delivers a fine, easy, thorough mist that for some reason also feels very 90s to me.
top notes: adehydes, bergamot, orange blossom, peach
heart: heliotrope, jasmine, rose, lily of the valley, orchid, iris, tuberose, ylang ylang
bottom: amber, benzoin, cedar, civet, musk, sandalwood, tonka bean, vanilla
I get the base notes first, maybe because they’re much heavier in comparison to all those airy florals, fruits, and aldehydes. The civet does kind of leap out but retreats quickly. Its tang is then amplified by the resins, notes that have a tendency to go either way on my skin (especially amber), but then they sort of mellow and unify with the tonka bean, musk, and vanilla into an addictive skinlike scent. I have a harder time sniffing out the sandalwood and cedar. Eventually it settles into something round and wholly blended, solid yet fluid, yet you can still pick out most of the individual notes if you try. The top and middle notes are almost like the air mattress the base notes sleep on. They’re there, but only squeak out when those heavy bottom notes allow them to escape, wafting to the ceiling in newfound freedom. Oh, there’s a little bit of rose. I just got a hint of juicy jasmine. The powdery iris does tend to dominate among the floral notes, but it works here, especially with that dusty amber. Hunt the iris a bit more, you find the peach. Find the peach, it leads you to the ylang ylang. And so on.
While certain elements quiet down or push through, as a whole it stays delicately feral the entire time. The amber is a dry, powdery one that downplays any sweetness. Even the peach seems dry, airy, like a desert wind. That’s why it’s described as cool, dusty, powdery, melancholy. I don’t find it heavy at all. It almost has an Aromatics Elixir “Lite” vibe to it. It has a gourmand vibe to it too— the longer you wear it, it warms up and gets slightly spicier, though thankfully it’s not a true gourmand. I see why some might find it more apt as a cold-weather scent, but I just got it and will wear it all summer long.
You know the saying “wear your clothes, don’t let your clothes wear you”? Substitute fragrance for clothing, and Maroussia has the distinction of being the only perfume where I’ve had the thought “it wears me, and I wear it in equal amounts.” It’s symbiotic in that way. It doesn’t smell cheap; nor does it smell expensive. It smells like itself, like a moment in time, a person the perfumer had in mind, a concept.
The one area where it could have turned sour on me to rain on my parade is the amber—but this chilly amber is mellow and bright, not sunny, more like light coming in through closed windows.
However, there are so many notes that if one disagrees with your skin chemistry, I can see how the whole situation could go awry.
The longer this wears on me, the more I like it. It has presence and longevity, but not a ton of sillage. It’s cheap enough that you can apply liberally without cringing though.
I often don’t really like popular, decades-old, drugstore fragrances (with the exception of White Musk obvi) and it might at least be partially due to my own personal scent associations with them. Maroussia does carry some of that with it, but since I grew up in America and not Russia, or even Europe, it’s new to my nose bank and I am very thankful for that, because I’m 100% loving it. It smells GOOD.
EDIT: I showed this to my dad, who’s from Greece, and he jumped out of his chair and yelled MAROUSSIA??!! WHERE DID YOU FIND THIS??!! I’m like…Amazon, dad…lol

WHERE HAS THIS PERFUME BEEN MY WHOLE LIFE? IT IS MAGICAL AND WONDEROUS! THIS IS A DIVINE PERFUME THAT I WOULD NEVER NEGLECT!
♥♥♥ I blind bought this even though a few comments here said not to. I am glad I didn’t put buying this perfume off another day!!! .The bottle of a Russian church/building captivated me so I decided to read the reviews. This perfume sounded so intriguing I just HAD to have it! I am so glad I did. I get more compliments when I wear this than ANY other perfume I wear. I cant imagine anyone not liking this its so exquisite! It is 100% a EXTREMELY seductive aphrodisiac potion.
I quickly found THE BIGGEST BOTTLE and bought this Oriental gem of a perfume on eBay for only 13.75, but it smells so much more expensive! It can cost a lot more for this perfume so do not think its just a cheapie, IT’S NOT! This is not a ” dirty fragrance”, as some are saying. It is not loud or old fashioned smelling either. The ones that are saying it is too strong did not give it enough time to settle on the skin. This fragrance is absolutely magical. At first it’s very strong but do not let that deter you because the dry down is a divine sexy love potion. It reminds me of Design at first because of the civet, which I understand is synthetic for ethical reasons. The civet comes on very strong at first but quickly fades. It’s a luxurious, sensual, and mature scent. The amber is so rich, balmy, and intense. It has a resin scent that is so soft and beautiful words cant describe it. Even though its very strong at first it quickly subsides. The people that are commenting saying it gives them a headache over-sprayed it or did not give this perfume a chance to settle on the skin. It does NOT smell like hairspray, pickled cucumbers, bug -spray or mothballs. It does NOT smell like post-coital heat nor is it dusty or bitter. It is NOT just a perfume for formal events or for funerals either, but this is just MY opinion.
This perfume suits cold weather because it’s so warm and delicious, but it is also is fine for warm weather because of the resin notes that melt into the warm air. It is so sensual and mature.
This is definitely my favorite scent and I have smelled most all of them. Its magic in a bottle and has became my signature scent. No other frag can compare with this one! Its so enchanting. It has a little bit of soapiness but its a clean refinement. There is absolutely no perfume like it. It is so heavenly after it settles into the skin. It’s so SEXY. It’s definitely my favorite. I would cry is they ever stopped making this luxury perfume, SO I AM STOCKING UP!
I just got the shower gel and body lotion to layer this divine scent. I also bought the cutest tiny bottle of this off of Ebay! It is now on my beautiful vanity.
A few people here reviewing said it smells like CK Obsession but I disagree it does not smell anything like it. It smells SO MUCH BETTER!!!…. Give this fragrance a chance it will not disappoint you!
I was hoping it would smell like a feminine version of the men’s cologne Farenheight and I was right!
PS. Even though this scent is far from being gourmand, I think some gourmand lovers would really enjoy this scent. Its a powerhouse. And to the person that said they would not want to stand close to somebody after spraying this perfume I just want to say I would not mind standing close to you AT ALL! And if you’re married and your husband does not like it its probably because you smell sexy and he does not want other men to notice you ahahah! Do not let anyone ( including your husband) dictate what you can and can not wear unless it truly makes him have an allergic reaction.
PSS. I am wearing a different fragrance today but my bottle of this is close to me in my work drawer and I just got a wiff of it and regret not wearing it today. I honestly cant believe a scent can smell as good as this. I love you so much Maroussia, please marry me. ♥♥♥
If you would like a free sample send me a direct message with your address I will send a small vial. No problem.

I’ve gone thogh two bottles of this, and I do this it smells nice. Is it my favourite? Not really, but I would buy it again. It is a slightly more mature scent, I find, so do not buy this expecting it to smell of candy. I love the packaging, I think the resemblance to the Saint Basil’s Cathedral is so pretty.

I came across this scent when I was in my early teens. My elegant and beautiful grandmother wore this. When I stayed over at her house she let me wear it. When I went on holiday with her to Spain and Italy she had given me my own bottle and I wore it all the time. I felt so chique and grown up!
I left Maroussia for what it was and moved on to other scents. My grandmother has passed on, and suddenly I came across Maroussia again. After that first spritz I was hooked again. It smells dark and heavy at first, but once dried down it becomes dry and soapy. I love it! So interesting that I keep on sniffing my wrist.
With every waft of this scent, I see my grandmother, strolling down the narrow streets of Venice, sunbathing on the beaches in Spain… all with that everlasting scent of Maroussia and her elegance…❤

Based on others’ reviews, I blind bought a small bottle of this. I’d have to say this is probably my worst blind buy ever. I do like Oriental, amber-y fragrances, but something about this just smells wrong. It smells like a mixture of Shalimar and Opium mixed with Pine-Sol, or some kind of strong industrial strength cleaning product or machine oil. It has a smoky chypre “bite” to it that turned me off from the first spray. To my nose this is a truly dreadful fragrance — chemical, sharp and heavy, with pervasive sillage. I strongly recommend sampling this before buying.

I was given a bottle of Maroussia when it first came out. I remember it as being a cool powdery amber that made me feel a touch melancholy when I wore it. I remembered it as being quite strong back then. I only ware it a dozen times before giving it to someone else.
Recently I was given a bottle for Christmas. I’ve tried wearing it three times. It still smells like a cool powdery amber that makes me feel a touch melancholy. The only difference is that it is nowhere near as strong. It’s a real wrist sniffer on me. Whether that’s because my body chemistry is changing or the formulation has been changed, I don’t know. Either way, there is something about this fragrance that I find unpleasant. On paper I love the sound of the notes, but on my skin it really does evoke a feeling of melancholy. This is the opposite of how I want perfume to make me feel. I have already passed it onto a teenage friend who is just beginning to experiment with fragrance.
Two thumbs down for me.

Warm oriental spicy perfume with amazing sillage and impressive lasting power. A winter perfume which tells a story. The kind which would scare you first for no reason but if you give it a chance, it will suprise you. Treasure from a drugstore with a very nice price tag.

Alphonsine Duplessis sits in her box at the Paris Opera. The camelias she holds are red to warn her lovers that she is unavailable. Her furs are thrown on the chair beside her and the slight scent wafting from them is Maroussia. Unabashedly romantic, sweet with incense and melancholy this is a fragrance to wear when it is cold outside. Once smitten you will treasure this for the rest of your life and be remembered for your elegance.
Forget the cheap price tag, the tacky packaging and the fact that it was created in 1992 in Russia. Wear it and transport yourself to Fin de Siecle Paris or St Petersburg. Magical!

A warm, spicy and sweet scent. It has a bit of a ‘Russian’ feel to it, almost melancholic. It is rather unique smelling too, I don’t think I’ve ever came across a perfume that somewhat resembled Maroussia.
Very feminine and a good scent for cold autumn and winter days. It will colour up those gray skies. I think it would be too overpowering for summer though.

Wonderful light resinous myrrh that reminded me very much of Comme des Garcons’ Sticky Cake. I don’t get much in the way of top notes, but the resinous myrrh feeling is fabulous, and must be a combinatio of the aldehydes and basenotes. Very very lovely and almost pollenous like flowers shedding yellow dust over sunlit leaves. A smooth, cool base of maybe fruited musk? adds a great bottom for those wonderful soaring top notes. Loving this.
