I love this fragrance. This particular review is for the rollerball which is the same scent that comes in the cute little retro bottle. The bottle is meant to evoke the memory of an old bottle the designer found at a flea market 20 years ago. Plus, it comes with an absolutely adorable little doll…..the Marni doll. Rose and cinnamon is what Marni is all about and it is incredibly long lasting. It is woody and musky at the same time. Could totally have been a masculine scent but i suppose the powers that be thought the rose top note would have turned men off from the fragrance. Actually, Marni was not a success in the United States. A representative for Saks Fifth Avenue where the scent was sold exclusively told me a few days ago that Marni is no longer being sold in the U.S. which is a crying shame since it is so nice. It’s a quirky little scent that does not conform and is not similiar to any perfume on the market i dont think. Thats okay though. It’s still easily available on the internet.

This is a strange one for me. Although the dry-down is a sort of ‘spicy’ rose (a nice spicy rose), it’s takes a lot of odd transitions before it gets there. It seems to be a scent that doesn’t quite know what it wants to be? In saying this, however, I don’t dislike it,
Another point to add is it’s poor longevity. At best it lasts around 4 hours on me from initial blast. I’m not one who has a need to be constantly smelling ‘perfumy’ but it would be nice to detect at least SOMETHING 4 hours after spraying. All I detect is a hint of peppery vanilla’ry rose. Strangely though, on the days I’ve worn this scent I seem to get a lot of male attention. Maybe there’s something in it that is attractive to the male gender that my nose just can’t detect!
So, the initial blast is just slightly on the musty side and reminiscent of the original Marni (which I wasn’t too fond of) but not enough to be off-putting and it doesn’t last long. It then disappears into a sheer floral/fruity/spicy/woody smell (yes, there’s that much going on) which is difficult to interpret.
However, all in all it’s not an unpleasant perfume. It’s just one which is difficult to define. It’s not pretty enough to be pretty, not strong enough to be seductive, neither old nor young, fashionable or unfashionable. It’s just a weird peppery rose with a slight hint of vanilla.
If you like rose themed scents with a mix of something different this might be for you – but it will not embrace you with it’s uniqueness all day and for the price I’d expect a little more magic.
As a side note you get a scary looking doll with the purchase. I don’t know what the thinking is behind this – it looks like the kind of thing you’d stick pins into.
