Devil in Disguise is a 2012 launch by Mark Buxton. Both the allusion to the Elvis Presley song and the text on Mark Buxton website – ‘the divine wind of danger’ hint that the fragrance unfolds in unexpected ways after the bright and cheerful opening. This is not true in my case as I don’t get any dangerous notes – unless rhubarb is the devil in disguise here. But then maybe it is – as the text says ‘fatal attraction of rhubarb leaves.’ I am not fatally attracted to rhubarb but I must say that I really enjoy its tartness here, especially with slightly smoky vetyver in the background. I also get some clean, light, almost lemony patchouli that does not dominate other notes. This is more or less what happens on my skin. There isnt’ a darker drydown.
And my favorite thing about Devil in Disguise. There is something in this fragrance that reminds me of one of my favorite fragrances, Nuit de Tubereuse. Considered a synthetic rendering of the flower by some, Nuit de Tubereuse has this sparkly element. It’s almost like olfactory glitter to my nose which I love. Devil in Disguise has the same wonderful sparkle on my skin minus the sweetness and slight darkness of Nuit de Tubereuse and I enjoy this association a lot. It feels like Devil in Disguise is a younger, sportier, witty and humorous brother to Nuit de Tubereuse. It sparkles with rhubarb, ginger and citrus. This is what makes it a very interesting scent for me until the drydown even if the notes are mostly fresh and linear on me. I would be madly in love if this experience moved into the drydown as well. I went through my bottle pretty quickly with frequent spritzes – Devil in Disguise is not exactly a powerhouse.
I think this is FBW in an imaginary world of unlimited finances but if I have to choose, I will opt for Nuit de Tubereuse as I have a love affair with it.
